>Wouldn't the computer architecture make an OpenBSD router less stable?
Well, choose a stable computerarchitecture:-)
I use a (in other terms) obsolete Sun Ultra1 on OpenBSD/Sparc64, runs like a dream... hardwarecost: $40 softwarecost: $0 (though I should buy the CDs, just for the stickers!)
It feels criminal, so much quality for so less money, even beats the cheaper craprouters...
After various setups I now have a nforce2-motherboard with SoundStorm onboard(A7N8X-E Deluxe) to do on the fly AC3-encoding so I only have one cable running from my HTPC to my stereo(and yet be able to switch between mp3/divx/tv/dvd etc.)... Only thing is, when I watch live television, this conversion (stereo-2ch-analog -> AC3 -> analog) comes with a little latency... I've been thinking if how I could get some latency in the videosignal, but it seems there's an answer now:-)
(and when you wonder why I don't just skip the AC3-part, it saves me a pre-amplifier as now I'm able to plug in my AC3-decoder straight into my amps...)
Well, A/UX is floating around if you look carefully:-)
http://geektechnique.org/projects/aux-on-quadra. ht ml...it's still under copyright of course, but where to buy it? Anyway, on a slow sunday-afternoon I like to fiddle with it, I run it just for fun:-)
I agree... I have standard formfactor audio-equipment and I would like my HTPC to be the same. Now it's a black ATX Midi-tower case standing next to my stereo and it looks like shit... but I'm looking into getting myself a black 19" rack, but I find them a little pricey still... But well, maybe I run into a cheap 19"-rack and have to paint it myself... we'll see
...in the meantime I just enjoy my coffee out of this PeopleSoft/Oracle-mug
(bought it about a year ago on a fleamarket, don't know it's origins or anything)
But... it sticks out on the backside... I've been using it now for a month or such and to great enjoyment I can say. But this is just a monitor connected to a 'decent' PC. I haven't planned to put in a mini-itx-board or such. Next to that, I have a whole bunch of old Macs and I'm not planning on modding all of them, I just had these 2 compact macs and no use for this SE(which wasn't in concours-winning condition either). I use my other compact mac (a Classic II) still as a terminal/console on my router/firewall. Other 'projects' in progress are NetBSD on my chipped LC475(finished install but looking for an ethernetcard) and A/UX on my Quadra 800(looking for a scsi-cd-romplayer to finish the installation).
Sure, I'm a retard... when your goal is a 50mb system, I would rather start off with one floppy then with 6 CD's... I tried to emphasize on the starting point after installation... But sure, be my guest and go find all the options you don't need, then I'll look for what I do need...
Well, I'm surprised by the figures I read here. I use netBSD since september last year and it's been a good experience ever since. It gave me what I was looking for on Linux, a small footprint after the installation and I guess that's not what linux is about anymore, hence the 5-7 CD-set on most of the distributions. Burning just another set of iso's just to give another linux-flavour a try isn't my idea of efficiency. But hey, we all have fat pipes and fat systems, haven't we? So who cares about a small footprint and a 5 iso download? Well, I do... In the meantime I'll be happy with my netBSD bootfloppy and a ftp-install to match.

My mod at least has a tube in it :-)

Oh, and I do use a Classic II regularly just as it is and as it was intended...

Well, they are sold here at computertrades (here=Holland)... I bought a 9" 800x600 SVGA-monitor and housed it in a SE as my monitor to my HTPC...
