    just to clarify.

This is clearly a lie, everyone knows the duck head only costs $9 and change to replace.

On the contrary, I've read that Jobs had Apple Retail on his mind ever since he came back.

If this is a joke, it's one of the best publicity stunts I've seen in a long time. Way to get some free press, I don't think anyone would be mad if they found out that free 1GB email wasn't real.

"Oh, it was a fake? That figures, the bust is over."

What's with that X 2 on the top, if that's what it spells? Clearly Microsoft will be changing its plans for the next Xbox after seeing all there best prototypes bested by a mere amateur. These movie tie-ins are getting out of control. What, did Wolverine carve those letters in himself? They certainly weren't measured or stenciled in any way at all.

Don't fret about weather this was a greedy or geeky endeavor, I think his profit motive will be deflated when the last eBay bid comes in at about $38. And you thought Microsoft was taking a loss on each console it sells!?!

  8. Re:What OS? on Building a Budget Storage Server · · Score: 2, Insightful

Yes, this seems like a huge oversight to me too. Especially when comparing it to offerings from Dell and Apple, who surely include a Server OS with their hardware. It's not like you can just throw Microsoft Windows Server 2003 into the mix without affecting the budget. I know that XServe from Apple they are referring to comes with an Unlimited Client version of OS X Server. MS Windows Server 2003 is $999 for only 5 Clients, and $3999 for 25. Now compare this build it yourself to the Xserve! There reasoning for saying no to Linux was the formatting of the hard drives into any common Linux format would reduce compatibility when the drives were eventually moved into External FireWire enclosures.

  9. XML Library export on Apple Releases iTunes for Windows · · Score: 1

iTunes for Windows can output both playlists and the entire Library as an XML file. Who's gonna be the first to make an app that can convert this into something nice like a neatly formated HTML page? Or of course there is always the possbility of taking it further and making an app that will let remote users search and copy the music files (assuming they weren't bought from iTMS). Whatever, someone needs to make something cool that uses this.

  10. Re:This is what happens... on Enter The Matrix - Patches, No Reviews? · · Score: 1

I agree that making a very ambitious, multiplatform game under a strict deadline is just begging for problems. But that's not the only pace where they were begging for problems!

The inclusion of a driving portion was just stupid. Mixing genres is almost always a curse, and this is no exception.

On the otherhand, many of the animations are just killer, and of course the bullet time is an awesome feature. The integration with the story (I would say there are no spoilers, so far as I've gotten) is really quite nice too.

Unfortunately it just feels rushed and rough. The control is awkward (using the always lame Tomb Raider style of walking only where you are facing), the visuals could be better on the Xbox version, and they generally tried to do too much.

But that's kinda par for the case for a game from Shiny. It's been a long time since Earthworm Jim.

  11. Re:Is this the same Slashdot that loves Apple's DR on Gates on Digital Restrictions Technologies · · Score: 2, Informative

Apple's DRM applies only to music that you have purchased from them, and it's not too restrictive except for obvious things like giving it away for free. In this case you actually have a choice to not buy the music. Gates wants no one to have a choice. He wants to have limits already built in when you use anything: DVD, CD, Game, whatever. Can you see the difference? I suspect that the only compensation Apple has provided to /. "editors" is making available bad ass laptops with a sweet GUI and UNIX underneath.

  12. Re:Security! Security! Security! on Gates on Digital Restrictions Technologies · · Score: 1

The biggest pretense is Billy fake assuming that this is something consumers are demanding or even interested in. What exactly is the percentage of people who are really worried that a "hacker" might get into their bank records and then ... LOOK AT THEM?!? Far lower than the percentage of people who trade music online for instance. This isn't about consumers, let's not let Gates pretend that the world's weathiest man got that way be looking out for the needs of the common man.
