  1. Rule 1: Ignore Those Other Rules. on Surviving College With Gear And Sanity Intact? · · Score: 1

Don't go to University thinking you have to measure up to someone else's standards for what you have to do there (e.g. the list from one to seven posted earler). The most important thing about University is developing your sense of self and preparing yourself for your real life. To that end, do expose yourself to different aspects of university life: go see a lecture, some art films, a ska band, but don't feel that you have to drink 14 Coors Light's every night and try to hit on every skanky chick in your dorm to get the "true college experience".

Like a lot of Slashdot readers, you may not be physiologically wired to enjoy people hanging around you in close quarters for eight months at a time. This is not a fault with you, don't be afraid to go read a book or surf the web somewhere quiet, like the library. It would probably also be good to find a place off-campus where you can escape the pressure for a while. Keeping fit and active is also always an excellent idea and should help with University stress.

  3. Good and Bad of Family Guy. on Fox Considering a Return of "Family Guy" · · Score: 1

Good: As mentioned, when it's on, the laugh-per-minute meter is untouchable. It does blend low and high-culture very well, taking shots at everything and not being pretentious or sleazy. Bad: Frankly, the show can be creepy if you watch quite a few in a row. The stuff between Stewie and Lois is always threatening to cross the line, and the show is very nihilistic overall. If you are a big Simpsons fan, you're going to be annoyed at all of the characters, gags and situations that were lifted wholesale from that show. Unlike the Simpsons, Family Guy never had the chance/desire to give the characters any depth so if the rapidfire gags aren't working, the shows tend to bomb pretty hard.

  4. American Gods: Not that Good. on Neil Gaiman Responds · · Score: 1

I'll admit that I have not read a lot of Gaiman's work, but I didn't particular enjoy American Gods. It was an interesting concept but the story seemed to lose steam about half-way through and never picked up the threads. I was surprised to see that is was shortlisted for the Hugo/Nebula awards.

Variations of these re-ranking schemes have been around since the 1970's. This sort of scheme is also easy to do implicitly by tracking which results have been clicked on and then using the keywords in those clicked-on results to improve the original search terms. Hotbot.com, among others, used to do this.
