  1. Re:that's some nice rationalizations there on Irish Reject E-Voting, Go Back To Paper · · Score: 1

Not true. I've heard of voting machine attacks where the compromised voting machine will accept a person's ballot, print out a paper copy asking for verification. Now normally if there's an error, the person can go back and void that paper copy and re-vote. However, with this attack, the voter will verify the paper ballot, the machine will tell the voter that everything is done, and then after a few seconds the machine will go back, void the ballot, change a candidate, and print a new paper ballot. Everything looks fine and official, and nobody could ever tell something went wrong, though both the machine and the paper trail have both been cheated. Doing this attack on only a few percent of the votes wouldn't set off any warning signs for anyone looking at the votes after the fact, but would be enough to throw an election.

I don't think there's any way that e-voting can be secure than plain paper voting.

Yes, WoW has a tight community, but I don't think many replace their lives with it. Once large enough people are able to quit their jobs to be fully immersed in World of Warcraft (or any other online RPG) and still somehow sustain their real-life bodies and pay the monthly fees, then it'll be a true virtual world.

One thing that most people here don't seem to get: There's a difference between public information, and publicly announced information. Yes you can click the stupid little X, but there needs to be an option to totally disable the Mini Feed, and never have it post any of your information ever again. Right now it's really damned time consuming for having to delete, ONE BY ONE, the things you're done the past few months. Most of the older slashdotters don't seem to "get it". Yeah, it's public, but I nor most other Facebookers want this info SCREAMED out at everyone. -Dash

Yeah, that would be nice. Thing is though, I should be the one who is forced to go through finding their old CSS and geting a plugin for only one of the browsers that I use just so I'm able to read the damned site without a headache... They make a problem, they need to fix it. Thanks for the idea for the plugin though, I'll try and check that out if this CSS isn't fixed soon.

Seriously guys, maybe the old CSS needed to be changed, but this is a hell of a lot worse. It's hard on my eyes, hard to read, way too generic, and looks like it was based on Windows Vista. Come on. Can we the readers of Slashdot PLEASE have a way to switch back to the old CSS if we choose? I've been quite a longtime reader of Slashdot, but if this new design is kept with no way to switch, I'm going to quit reading Slashdot. I don't really know where I'd get my tech news from, since Slashdot is the best, but this design is absolutely horrible and makes my eyes ache (quite literally). Nastily clashing colors too... Yuck, did the guy who made this ever take a design class? OK I'm ranting now. But before I got modded down, ket me please as for some way to switch back! -Dash

Yes, I agree that they should do their jobs. Sometimes, yes, it does seem like a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" situation.

The problem here is they are using intimidation tactics unprovoked on some college student who was CHECKING OUT A BOOK. If the kid had done something wrong, or ANYTHING that would warrant suspicion, yeah they should check it it.

But the kid was just requesting a book.

If you want to read something in the country, you shouldn't have to worry about the government knocking on your door about it. This kid did nothing remotely wrong, and taxpayer dollars are spent intimidating intimidating him for no reason.

Whoever sent those agents out should be jailed.

  13. Re:Why No -NC-17? on MPAA Gives Film About Ratings an NC-17 Rating · · Score: 1

Becuase they probably won't get as many patrons to come see an NC-17 movie as opposed to a movie with a lesser rating. So, if there's a choice between say a PG-13 and an NC-17 movie, they'll go with the PG-13 one because it'll make more money. Most theaters can't simply choose to show both, as they have a limited number of screens/showtimes. Chalk this up as another victim of the bottom line. -Dash
