I looked in the mirro today, and realised my stuble didn't bother me that much. I saw no ladder tho.. I only see the ladder when the leprechaun talks to me.
$1000US for 1GB doesn't seem so bad to me Some day, some spoiled little brat of a kid will find this post, and say "Jeez, they had ait bad then, my hyper-photon processor's cache is 1GB
"making them more expensive for the multi-terabyte capacity we'll have by then"
i want to debate this. My first PC - family - Pentium 133 Mhz- pre-mmx I believe. ( The computer I have now has a bus thats 6 times that). Old machine - 1gb hdd. The ram I have now is half that....The processor is probably about 25 times faster!
Do I feel al of this wonderful increase - not quite to that degree. It is nice to have all that speed and capcity, but I really dont need the capacity so much. I believe Im not foolish enough to be sucked into buying the latest technology at premium prices. If I got the processor I REALLY wanted...I would be flat broke now.
My present computer won't be upgraded for a long time..!
I just dont need terrabyte capacity. I do play games sometimes which require allot of space but ultimately I reckon I could happily survive on 1gb - just use a stripped down version of linux..
The problem is the first GB discs were very low RPM, slow seek time etc. Put it this way.
If I had the choice of the following choice:
A) 10GHZ proc with 1GB disc B) 1GHZ proc with 10GB disc
If a l33t script kiddie has managed to replace that damn.tgz with a one containing a r00t kit Damit thats the point, a cracker( or even a kiddy) could crack the server, and replace the data on the Md5 hash - same thing, you can never be SURE..
it is completely and utterly ineffective, and in fact does more damage then that it does good.
Duh, but thats not the point. The point is that the whole thing was blown out of proportion...
$1K/G,
Just SAY IT - a whooping 1,000 $ for 1 crappy GB!
No thanks I'll stick with my s-ata, and if that gives me any more issues, I'll get rid of that too, and use IDE
record my whole life ona 100 terrabyte 31/2 inch disk when I can record all the highlights of my life on a 31/2 inch floppy of ~1.44 mb (sex included!)!!
Yeah, food market research MS - what about Thailand? They will laught at you. Many there are either using linux or the pirate (full unrestricted) version of Longhorn..!
Firstly, as mentioned in the transgaming forum,
the twat that got all worked up about this has been using Gentoo for a grand total of 13 days, and he still has the nerve to mobilise everyone..to comlain../. will publish anything these days!!
Also, all hopes of using md5 or any other form of checksumming to verify valid files are out the window.
Wake up, even if the MD5's check off, there is no guarantee that it is safe. Also, please note that there are other
hashing algorithms besides MD5!
Also, you can run arbitrary bit sums which would be ideal in this case.
For exaple, the Java language has classes for this. You can download the.tgz on one machine, run an arbitrary crc or adler checksum on a portion of the file that does NOT include the signature. Then simply download on another machine and repeat.
This should give cynical people like you the reassurance you need. If both sums are the same you might be ok, of course you can have as many sum checks as you want..
there have been a grand total of *0* applications that have had copy protection methods and not had those methods defeated
Wrong, And even if they are defeated you will find that the goal of this security method is
to deter piracy, not to prevent it. I.e. If you are a cracker, you will circumvent the system. If you are a general user you won't know where to start.
For example, the company I work for uses SecuROM CD protection which can be overcome without too much difficulty, but most customers
don't know how to. Also, the methods like Transgamings (if they remain) in my opinion are better - ie no annoying need to swap CD's in and out of a drive!.
people like their computer to look and work in a consistent way
Thats because you've been using the same OS too much my friend. Soon everyone will be using MS OS, and applications for everything and then you will be REALLY into your work in a consistent way/u> People dont even realize they are having their mind made up for them by MS.
What really gets me is the misinterpretation. Windows OS practially lie: 'Everything you asked me to do is done because my lovely progress bar has reached the end..'BS.
They're hardly stupid if they're correct. Java can be optimized to run on a specific platform too.
All I'm trying to say is some people blindly compare c++ and Java as programming languages whereas really Java is an extension of c in many ways, making this argument pointless!
It doesnt "look" good at all
Let the Flamebaiting begin:
Azureus is cool. What are you using Windows?
You desserve what you get if you complain about it and you use Windows....You certainly sound like a Windows XP user or something. Java has its own original look and feel that is difficult for Windows buffs to accept.
If you are clever you will focus on how it works not how it looks.
embedding a program's signature into itself to verify it's not been tampered with
If I wanted to use this for the above, I could simple encode a serial number for the stenagraphy part. I could have an online server with a database of accepted strings.
User> Pays online.
The users 'username' and 'password' is also registered on the server.
His/her executable is encoded with the encrypted serial number of the 'username' and 'password'.
Then the user can download the executable.
Everytime the user wants to use the executable, they have to enter their 'username' and 'password'
The 'username' and 'password' is encrypted to a serial number which must equal the serial encoded in the executable itself and voila, Microsoft can now begin charging for use of whatever they are not yet charging you for...
People thought it was going away because of all the stupid people saying 'Oh, c++ is much faster' when in fact Java uses allot of native code that is actually compiled c code. Its often very fast.

If I woned your pentium II, I would try and swap it for a celeron 1GHZ with 1gb hdd!

Yes, or if you work in a relatively big office, your system admins do all that for you.
Constans sys admin on your box running Windows. Its a match made in the fires of hell.

Thats they're goal, NOT mine.!
Yep, its a pity too.
All the Transgaming hype could've been avoided ; )
it is completely and utterly ineffective, and in fact does more damage then that it does good. ..

Yes. You must thave I before you can have AI. There is allot more to I than most "think"..!
1. Uphold the law
2. Protect the innocent
3. Classified
Thankyou spelling Avenger,
Now fly off to your next grammar crime...!

You'll just love Longhorn then. It has borg assimilations for mp3 burning..everything included.
Be careful what you wish for...

Yeah I prefer KDE to GNOME.
In fact Im thinking of seitching to something like Fluxbox

I agree that you shouldn't worry about reporting them all, but it would be good to randomly report some of them - the unlucky kiddies?
Also, bare in mind that some of these attempts may be made by real crackers that want to use your box as a remote box to launch attacks.
Who knows, maybe in the future all servers and clients will be rigged with honey pots!!
