  3. Re:I'm old as Grace Hopper on A History Of Computing · · Score: 1

    Ouch. My first first.

I met Grace Hopper when I was in college. She was like a goddess to us JCL kiddies. No PC's then. Of course, a 10 meg drive for a microcomputer (that's what we called them) was as big as a volleyball so what was the point?. I can remember when you paid $5k for a dual floppy system at a breathtaking 4.77mhz. I can remember when people said to me "Why would anyone want a computer in their home?". I can remember when I could see my belt buckle. Oh those were the days.

Yeah, I'm holding out as long as I can.

BTW my first music purchase was an 8-track of Alice Cooper's new abum "Love it to Death". When I was in college, we didn't even have Pong. We had Po. You hit the ball and it went off the screen...game over.

But you can't tell young people that today.

  6. Definition of Censorship on Napster, Gnutella, Bans, Lawsuits And More · · Score: 2

Censorship is when the government(the only real censor) denies you the opportunity to hear or see something. You are free to listen to Metallica without government intervention.

It's strange to see the music industry, long known for its "liberalism" when it comes to social issues, trying to stand in the gap when people try to end run them. It becomes surreal when the music industry applauds groups like "Rage Against the Machine" who may end up raging against the music machine. I guess anarchy is fine until they kick in YOUR window.

It is fun to watch. I wonder how many kids go to Confession and say "Forgive me Father, I downloaded a bunch of DCTalk MP3s".

Bubble memory was expensive while Winchester (remember those) drives were becoming cheaper in the early 80's. Along came the RAM shortage in the mid 80's and the rest is history.

All you need is RAM connected to a battery and Bob's your uncle. Of course, RAID is a lot cheaper. It would be cheaper to daisychain 8 20 gig drives to get a cheap terabyte and then RAID those bad boys. If one goes bad, plug another and keep moving.

All this so some secretary can gangbang our inboxes with promises of GAP clothing. Why are we doing this again?

I was teaching middle school at church and all the boys loved Beavis and Butthead. This seemed ironic, much like Germans liking Hogans Heroes.

I also find it ironic that the kids at my daughter's elementary school know all about South Park but their parents say they aren't allowed to watch it. One of the kids was sitting in the lobby yelling "YOU BASTARDS" at everyone coming in. Maybe I should introduce these parents to their kids.

After 20 years, I found out something. If you don't love programming, it will destroy you. I wish I had a dollar for every knucklehead who told me "I hate to code but I like the money". They always ended up as a manager or a headhunter or unemployed. And people who can't code make the worst IT managers because they have nothing to cushion their fall and they don't understand the projects assigned to them.

Yes there is a shortage of programmers because it's a genetic skill. Programmers are born, not trained. You have to have a programming mindset to be a good programmer. And if you don't have it, you will hate doing it and no amount of money will satisfy you.
