  1. Re:How does Debian fit in? on New Ubuntu Foundation Announced · · Score: 1

Another issue is Java. I don't know the state of Java support on Ubuntu, but one great thing about Fedora is the Java support. Redhat has devs *actively* working on GCJ, and it shows. Besides the rapid progress GCJ has been seeing, have a look at all the Java-related packages you can install with FC4.

I'm on Debian Etch right now for my desktop (with Gnome, and reluctantly with Sun's Java implementation), but I very much like working with Java (and Perl), and like how well Free Java is being incorporated into Fedora. Next stop for me is probably either FC4 or YellowDog, plus GCJ.

I didn't say it would *stay* seized up, but it would certainly make the world sit up and take notice.

Not Slashdot though, of course. Lord forbid they practise what they preach, not while there's ad revenue to be made.

Heh. Good point. I'd like to see some big sites shut down. Imagine if Google shut down in protest? That would get some attention. The whole freakin' internet would seize up if Google shut down for a few days.

The things that break down on computers the most are things with moving parts: that's hard disks, fans, and occasionally floppy/CD drives (only occasionally since they don't run all the time).

If I want a reliable system, I want to eliminate any weak links that I can. For the ultimate in fanless, some folks eliminate the hard disk in favor of flash memory; I wish I understood it better, but I think the deal is to mount the flash memory as read-only, and then create a writable partition in RAM. This way the OS isn't constantly writing to the flash memory and thus not wearing it out as quick.

Also, I'm guessing that, for the folks doing audio work, any moving parts also add noise. But that's just a guess.

No. Please no. :) It takes certain skills to write clear, concise, and readable docs. Nothing turns me off to a project faster than lousy docs. If you're good at writing, excellent, please contribute to the docs, but if you're not, killjoe's other suggestions are great. Also submitting bugs to the relevant project's bugzilla page (including step-by-step instructions to reproduce the bug) is a great way to contribute.

  8. Re:yeah right on Doom Movie in Production For Aug 2005 Release · · Score: 1

My idea of the perfect Doom movie: Zero dialogue. None. The Rock will do fine. Lot's of raised eyebrow looks where The Rock imagines something like, "What would happen if I charge through that door?" and then we see his gruesome imaginary demise in some hideous fashion. Then he decides against it, instead pulling off some fabulous coup where foul monsters get sent back to their maker by the pile.

Extra-funny/gory special effects would be great too: monster blood-n-guts gets splashed in his face and he spits, gags, and sputters it out while still firing. Man I'd be laughin' through the whole thing.

After the movie, at the end of the credits, they could even throw in some of the IDDQD/IDKFA gags.

Where do you find real creative film making like that anyway?
