Yes. WE are the Borg. In our collective mind we will hear the thoughts of all other people. We will be assimilated by Asscroft and his merry man. I'm sure, Bill Gates has something to do with it as well.
Thank you for taking the words out of my mouth. I still cannot understand, that people refuse to learn more about this very practical tool called a PC and how to take care of it.
Can you imagine if Gator, Bonzi Buddy would install in your CAR and send the info when and where you've been to someone (who knows who) and on occasion cover your windshield with an ad (while driving), stall your engine on the freeway etc. People would be furious, yet on a PC this behaviour is accepted (and rewarded by buying another copy of Windows and Office).
I work in tech support and I always get that "The Computer did... ". No, the computer only did what you told it to do. Plain and simple. This is why my box stays up for months on end (with Linux) and the other machines crash.
I am in the middle of downloading the ISO (~200mb so far) and - boom - slashdotted......
All kidding aside, this is a great tool as a bood cd distro and works equally well for a hdd install. Since Debian always put up a fight for me in the past, this is about as sweet as it gets.
An if anybody says Linux is not ready for the desktop, I just laugh. It works perfect for me. Yes, there is a learning curve, but the more you know, the better it gets. AND you can do things at your own pace.
I have read many good points here and I am sure there are more. But let's face it, what it really comes down to is marketing. 95% or people have no clue and just believe what they are told.
Decisionmakers, who are arguably more informed, are being swayed by "better" marketing. I remember going to a Miscrosoft OEM event in 92. I got to meet Bill Gates and a bunch of other executives. We had a great party with George Benson playing live. It was impressive. Now that takes care of another 3% and the remaining 2% are just written off as a pain in the butt.
As much as it pains me, I predict a huge success for Palladium and I vow NEVER to let it enter ANY of my systems.
Come on, people. You don't trust your own kids? That's pretty sad. Look, I'm not saying there are never any incidences, but for christs sake, let the kids be kids and let them make some mistakes and LEARN from them. Stop shoving probes up their asses, remember, they will (we hope) take care of us when we are old.
I used to use Yahoo with pop3 client and was quite happy (except the spam part). Then they started charging and I was ready to pay, except I did not want to sign up for their wallet service (keep your fingers out of MY wallet!!!). So, I just found a hosting company and got myself unlimited mailboxes, website, ftp site etc, etc. for $60/year.
They have a nice web panel for controlling all aspects of the site. I can make a mailbox just for spam. Shut that box down when it get's overwhelmed. Have webmail access from anywhere.
at the rate I change cell providers (because the service usually sucks and I am still hoping to find a good one) they'll have a heck of a time to keep up with me.
Unless, they will offer portable cell numbers. Oooops.
but I refuse to talk to endusers. Period. Not Happening.
As for support at home (wife, 3 kids - one PC each) it's very simple.
Daughter & younger son: I install Linux and lock the box down and they don't have the root password. Never a problem. Occasionally they ask me to install a new application. Other than that, it just works. Annual support hours: 2
Wife & older son: Need to run Windows for work/school. What a freakin nightmare. They already know the routine. Reboot. Then I typically ignore them for a few days. Then we reinstall and eventually reformat. Then I'm pissed for another two days. Funniest part is when my daughter makes fun of them. Annual support hours: countless
when I read the forum threads, I was surprised by the variety of reasons why people switched. Maybe, oneday I'll make a list. But in the meantime, I have to say the Linux train cannot be stopped. The momentum is there and more and more people are finding out what this is all about.
Without reading the article, I have this to say. I am trying to GET AWAY from that look. For me it represents all things wrong and I'd rather go through a learning Kurve than soil my choice of OS.
The developers need to get over the Stockholm effect!
The term "Stockholm Effect" was coined in the early 70's to describe the puzzling, completely unpredicted reactions of four bank employees who became victims of a hostage situation. Specifically, on August 23, 1973, three women and a man were taken hostage in one of the largest banks in Stockholm, Sweden by two ex-convicts. They were held for six days by these ex-convicts who continuously threatened their lives but also showed them what they later reported as small kindnesses during their detention. To the world's surprise, after a relatively short period of time, ALL FOUR OF THE HOSTAGES STRONGLY RESISTED THE GOVERNMENT'S EFFORTS TO RESCUE THEM and and WERE QUIT EAGER TO DEFEND THEIR CAPTORS
This may be a stupid question

but can we not write a little add-on program to word/excel/powerpoint to allow File->Save As->Openoffice.sxw or File->Export->Openoffice.sxw???
I am not a programmer, so I don't know how feasible that is. I know I would download and install something like that.
OK, I'm as much a geek as the next guy, but you won't catch me anytime soon strapped to one of those things. The cell phone and the laptop are enough. And contrary to most people here, I do make liberal use of the OFF SWITCH and am not bothered too much by being on an electronic leash.
In the end, most people would prefer something like on Startrek. Unintrusive devices like the computer you can talk to. The PAD. The communicator. I think that's all I want.
On the other hand, manufacturers will introduce these things and see what sticks. I do reserve the right to change my mind later on.
Great, the interface will be faster, but what about the actual drive speed. We are currently maxed out at 15k RPM and ~3ms access time. Compared to the improvements made on other PC parts (CPU, memory, video etc), hard drives are limping way behind. Todays drives cannot even come close to saturate the existing interfaces (except in RAID configurations).
What I would really like to see is some kickass desktop performance improvements for drives. Not just 15-25%, no, I want 4x, 10x performance improvements.
Now it will be even more convoluted. Windows is becoming more and more like out tax system (with holes) while Linux makes progress on "dependency hell" with systems like Gentoo ports and Debian's apt-get.
So, say I have office 2004 (which I won't) and I am reading a restricted document, which I supposedly cannot print or forward. Then I just take my digital camera, snap a picture of the screen (or two or three) and I have nice jpeg's to send around, print, post etc.
Just outlaw digital cameras as DMCA circumvention devices.
About overdone joke, I have not heard it before, so it seemed funny to me.
As for my love for her, trust me, I never wanted anyone else. Funny thing, though, she's the one running around after 17 years.
In regards to the other poster, yes, I filed for divorce today, as a matter of fact.
Cheers

As long as I get to hook up with Seven of Nine!

Come on, it was funny in the morning, but that shit's gettin' old now.
Shit, I just hope sex is like riding a bike. Even if you don't do it for a long time, you don't forget how!
Microsoft is as secure as a Ford Pinto is safe.

because spagetti with a spoon just ain't right.
"not to mention the increased headache of pissed off users who can't use their downloaded programs any more"
Now imagine the pissed off sysadmin who has to clean up the downloaded programs because they contained klez, slammer and other crap.
So, say I have office 2004 (which I won't) and I am reading a restricted document, which I supposedly cannot print or forward. Then I just take my digital camera, snap a picture of the screen (or two or three) and I have nice jpeg's to send around, print, post etc.

If NASA knew my wife, they would know the coldest place in the universe is my bedroom.
Yeah, right. Then they offer local phone service for $600 and I guarantee you, you'll have some idiot signing up. What then???
Bill's version of user friendly: give me all you money PLEASE
