Oh, I totally agree that parents should be able to edit movies so their kids can watch them. In fact, I do exactly that. For example, I edited all the BS family crap out of "the Incredibles" to make a great action movie for my three year old son. I did the same thing with the wonderful "Adventures of Baron Munchausen" by editing out the annoying scenes with Robin Williams and the piano torture scene. Take those out and you have a great kids movie.

The problem I have is allowing third party corporations to do this. If these corporations want to make family friendly movies, have them hire some producers and make those types of movies themselves. They shouldn't be able to leach off the work of others to make their products.

Today Steven Jobs has filed a temporary restraining order against his mother. The TRO claims that Jobs' mother kept talking about her son to friends and family, showed embarrassing pictures of him as a kid, and praised him for his success.

A spokesperson for Apple was quoted as saying, "Jobs' mom was always prone to talk about how proud she is of her son, but when she showed the friends in her knitting circle a picture of Steve when he was two years old using the toilet for the first time, her actions went from merely annoying to criminal."

This current action from Jobs has affected others in his family too. His wife of 14 years, Laurene Powell, has had her voice box surgically removed to avoid any chance of her offending her husband. Furthermore, his two children have been killed for talking about their dad in class.

Where have you been?! The lack of incentive for US students to enter the software industry is due entirely to the lack of jobs available once they graduate. Those jobs have NOT been replaced by the use of open source software. They have been replaced when software development is outsourced to India, or elsewhere.

And secondly, why would the software industry suddenly die with open source? We would still need software. Thus software would still need to be written. IBM and HP pay people to write open source software. Now I'm not saying that all software SHOULD be open sourced, I agree that's ludicrous. I'm only saying that it could not kill the software industry.

And it will also affect areas of the country differently. I imagine areas in Nebraska will remain analog well into the next decade.

This does NOT give users the right to edit commercially bought or rented DVDs in their own home! Do you really think Congress would toss out the DMCA?!

This gives COMPANIES the ability to decide what is objectionable, program that information in their DVD players, and sell those players to consumers. When an "objectionable" DVD is played the consumer can choose to use the edits the COMPANY has determined are appropriate.

I wish this was about choice. I do think we have the right to edit movies for our own personal use. But let's get this straight about this bill; it gives NO rights to consumers.
