Advertisers continue to advertise things that people know exist for one reason: Brand awareness.
Go to the store and buy toothpaste. Look at the brands. People tend to think of the ones that have been heavily advertised as the "high quality" brands. There are other non-generic brands that people think of as the "cheapo" brands, merely because they weren't heavily advertised.
They need labels to put the up-front money necessary to produce a high quality cd.
Sound engineers, skilled production, and the like costs a pretty penny. Without them, your cd sounds like crap. Wihout a good sounding cd, your fan base is going to be the couple hundred kids from your home town that liked your show at Bob's party. Without more than a couple hundred fans, you DON'T make many from touring.
There's a big initial investment needed to make a band big, and THAT is what record labels do.
No they don't need to join an irc network and spend all day on it.
I think they understand the culture better than you think. You are referring to geek culture. They are trying to hit 12 year old teeny-bopper culture. And as dumb as this seems to me, I think they are right on.
Have you ever watched your 12 year old sister and her friends use the computer? This is exactly what they want (yes, maybe it does have the same functionality of irc, but sit your sister down in front of both of them, and see which one she'll pick. Then we'll talk)

Or forget buying a new pin cartridge connector. Take your NES apart and fix the connector yourself. It's amazingly easy (I have ZERO skills at stuff like this, and I found it to be really easy).
Or the University of Illinois, or many other large campuses.
It amazes me how much crap the "poor struggling college student" buys, and how much money is spent on new toys every week.
Most of them are far from poor, and it's not just around Princeton, Yale, and other "rich" schools.
Does the book mention Hrossa, Sorns, or Pfifltriggi?
Yeah, I never once saw a girl that looked like that in the 4 years I was at ISR! oh, by the way, hi marty!
Plus the cost of quality mics, without which you WON'T get a better sound than most people managed in the 80s.

But there is a lot of "music" that people will debate whether it is actually music. You just happened to name ones that obviously are.
Listen to some of John Cage's compositions, or other "experimental" music, including lowercase music.
So no, you are wrong when you say that question only comes up with visual arts...
I signed up for a NYT login, and get NO special offers or partner information. Some places actually honor it when you opt out of their email.....

My NES now works perfectly.
You are thinking of World Class Track Meet.
I know everyone gets those two confused, but Track and Field does not support the powerpad, as it came out long before the powerpad.
