How does a Justice Dept opinion become "US Now Says...Blah, Blah, Blah"? Especially considering that opinion isn't binding, and not representative of the US. The courts will tell us what is and isn't legal when they get a case to respond to. And clearly, it is legal within state lines no matter what Justice says because SCOTUS...wait for it...trumps them.

Considering how many people are beaten or killed by cops on the flimsiest of pretenses, sometimes even while officially in custody, without any consequences for the cop, that I'm not completely certain that "knowing your rights" is actually adequate defense against an "angry guy with a gun and a badge"

Since your chances of that are much lower than winning the lottery (unless you purposely do something to attract their attention), it's not worth your time and effort to even think about it.

Thinking TSA, a traffic stop, or even a nosey spouse or grandkid while I'm sleeping on the couch. I haven't checked yet, but I'm hoping I can at least change it to require the code as well.

I've been through this with relatives on the same side as me. For example, I'm a conservative, but pale in comparison to my wife's aunt, who is extreme right wing. During the '16 campaign, she was forwarding fake news against HRC, and I would reply all pointing out the error. She finally took to BCCing me on the emails, and I wrote to her saying that her efforts were not helping her cause. When it comes out that you're pushing lies, you generate sympathy for the person lied about instead of your desired goal...and HRC certainly had enough real issues without us needing to come up with phony ones. And before someone jumps on me about Trump, he was the first Republican presidential candidate that I didn't vote for in over forty years of elections.

Media was very much controlled during the first Persian Gulf war. It was a lesson DoD learned from how free reporters were in Vietnam. The press realized their mistake after the first Gulf war so were much better at avoiding that manipulation. I'm too lazy to google this, but there were plenty of articles on it at the time.

Quite possibly a quid pro quo for some other action that was privately agreed to. Or, it would be a red herring to simply make them more legitimate looking. That thief might have already been compromised so why not give him up publically.

  20. Not saying they didn't but it's a bit more difficult for the US to do so. If the lie gets leaked to the media or pretty much anyone not on the inside, the whole cover is blown. For the same reason most conspiracy theories are BS, this is also BS...you have too many people who know the facts, and it takes one person to blab if it's all a lie. The media (think Pentagon Papers) can get away with that in the US...try it in Russia or China.

  21. I always pretty much assume that the US, Russia, and China are doing more or less the same stuff

In general, I agree with this. The only difference is that in the U.S. companies don't have to cooperate with the government. And it's much more difficult to do so because it would be easy for one person to spill the beans.

    Anecdote...
Had to laugh at your comment there. I played my first chess tournament in DC back in '82 with around 300 other people. While I was in the registration line, talking to the man behind me, we both noticed a woman about ten yards away from us, who was talking to herself with her head down and holding a coffee cup. When she looked up, she saw us and said, "don't mind me, I'm just writing letters", and proceeded to talk with us for the next couple minutes. During that time, I noticed she was sipping from an empty coffee cup. Of those people, who do you suppose I played in my very first ever tournament game?...Joan Slilch (sp?), who was at the time one of the top USCF rated women. And yes, she crushed me.
