Okay, so this money was previously earned, there is no income to tax. Yeah, I'm no fan of trust fund kids either, but that's a different subject. This kid wasn't the one who earned the wealth, and those that did...didn't they pay taxes on the income?

Keeping costs as low as possible, is simple logic, and you can't compete well without doing that.

That's proof that they don't create jobs when they get tax rebates and at best, lower prices (though in practice, even that doesn't happen).

That was the point I was replying to, and it seems you are agreeing with my point, even if you don't agree with the manner in which I phrased it.

You've obviously never run a business. Keeping costs as low as possible is no indication of if you're hiring or not. Please go back to school and learn something.

You miss his point. The truly wealthy don't pay income tax, so it doesn't matter how high the marginal tax rate is on income, it has no impact on the truly wealthy.

We gave the rich billions, and they didn't create a single new job for it. When Exxon or Mobile take in 10 billion in profit in a quarter, do they add new jobs? No. They still try to keep costs as low as possible to repeat the performance next quarter.

We who? They didn't?...bullshit. As for Exxon, Mobile, and the others, we need to stop subsidizing them all.

Keeping costs as low as possible, is simple logic, and you can't compete well without doing that. The problem driven by Wall Street, is the one you pointed to, making your quarterly numbers is not always in the best interest of the shareholders, or the company in the long term.

I'm not saying it isn't the programmers fault but... Unless you know this first hand, I'd suggest that you're pointing a finger w/o enough evidence. Sure, the programmer probably made a coding error, or didn't put in error checking. Do you know that (s)he wasn't handed a poor set of requirements? Do you know that Knight didn't ask/pay for the cheap option instead of one with all the bells & whistles (error checking)?

I've worked on enough projects to know that there's a constant struggle between engineering and management. Engineers would like to create the best product we can, and management is always trying to get the product out the door as quick and cheaply as possible. At some point, they compromise, or management just says, you have until tomorrow or you can find another job (I'm only slightly exaggerating). I've seen Configuration Management load the wrong version of code into a delivery. I've seen requirements specs where you couldn't begin to guess what the customer really wanted.

This is a lesson in risk management, not only for the financial industry, but any company. Whenever your dealing with the possibility of a large financial loss, or potential harm to life, or property, a risk mitigation plan should be implemented. We do this for every project we work on.

Okay, I don't have any data to back this up, do you? I know that in our case, our customers see the cloud buzzword, and so marketing puts it into the proposals, and since it's normally less expensive to outsource this, we end up going that route. It has nothing to do with our own lack of expertise, just that we're too cheap to pay for our own. Think of it like this...I can mow my own lawn, but I choose to pay the kid down the street because my time is more valuable than what it costs to pay him.
