Maybe better, but still not good enough. Think about the staggered starts for longer races, and the fact that some of these events are won/lost in times of under .02 seconds. Maybe they could use some kind of light at the front of each starting position.

  6. While I share the opinion that the kid was a jackass, he and everyone else need to be allowed to speak their mind freely. The only exceptions should be when that speech is slanderous, or could be shown to reasonably cause harm (yelling fire in a theater, or incitement to riot, for example).

If you're an adult who is able to be intimidated by a tweet (other than an actual threat of violence), then you need to get help.

There are plenty of examples of hate speech, that at least in the U.S. would still be acceptable legally. The case of that church group protesting at the funerals of veterans comes to mind. While their actions turn my stomach, I believe they have the right to speak their mind (though I disagree with the court's finding, and think there should be some buffer between them and the funeral).

Having been a only child myself, and having raised an only child, I'd like to say there are pluses and minuses. Obviously, with fewer kids, there is less cost, and more time that could be devoted on an individual basis. I do believe that only children miss out (or at least are delayed in learning) some socialization skills. They don't have to learn to play nice with others...sharing...negotiating...and simply putting up with someone simply because you have to. Yes, there are exceptions, and yes, some of this can be learned elsewhere, but I'd argue that for the vast majority of only children, this is the way it is.

And, yes, I know I've only got my own data points to go on, but it's what I've observed fairly consistently in my 53 years.

Yes, we can all agree that what they did was wrong (and I'd love to see a bunch of them serving time for it). 23. Just Got Power Back on Tuesday on Slashdot Asks: Beating the Summer Heat? · · Score: 1

Fairfax County, Virginia (just west of Washington D.C.). We lost power Friday night around 10:30, and didn't get it back until Tuesday afternoon. Our neighborhood lines are buried, so obviously something upstream took the hit.

On Saturday, I had the last gas powered generator available at Costco on a cart. Not realizing the extent of the damage, or how long it would last, my wife and I decided to give it up ($1k for a brand I'd never heard of) to one of the other folks who asked if that was the only one remaining...probably could have sold it for double right in front of the store (but that's not me).

We slept in our basement the first night, and decided to look for a hotel on Saturday...no such luck (and our platinum status at Marriott was useless). We were lucky enough to get a room on Sunday, and the line at the hotel registration was about 30 people deep for the two days we were there.

My recommendations (note: I haven't read the other posts yet, so please forgive any duplicates)...
Stay low...heat rises, so the basement can be your friend.
    Keep hydrated...obvious, but worth repeating
If you have kids, a little time playing at a pool, lake, or even in your own water sprinkler can be refreshing.
    Cool showers
Go to the movies, library, or even to work if they have power.
If you need to exert yourself, take frequent breaks...pace it.

I'm in Fairfax Co. Our neighborhood was built in 2000-2003 with buried lines. After roughly 65 hours, we just got power back yesterday. In the ten years we've lived in our home, we've had about three outages that lasted a day or longer. Obviously, we're downrange from something that isn't buried.
