Pretty much everyone you will meet in South Korea is "quiet and respectful".
You've obviously not been around the bars, or driven the highways there. I lived there for six years, and was also married to one. They can be some of the loudest, most aggressive people you've ever met...based upon my anecdotal evidence of having visited roughly 40 countries.
Could it have something to do with the fact that comedy shows don't really influence voters as much as a weeping Glen Beck might, or a rabid Bill O'Reilly? Because that would be my guess.
I'd wager that The Daily Show has more influence than those two together.
Disclaimer: I watch them all, because I like hearing from a diverse group when trying to form my own opinions.
Seems to me that a lot of folks are whining about the US military taking action to protect itself from a similar future occurrence. Blacklisting != whining.
Still waiting for someone to point to the evidence of a war crime.
Snippets of videos, and quotes taken out of context are not fair game. So, until someone shows us some real evidence, this was nothing more than the illegal leak of classified information.
Let me admit here that I haven't followed the entire story, so if you can point to something I missed, I may just STFU.
This quote from the late great Sam Kinison seems appropriate:
“I’m like anyone else on this planet — I’m very moved by world hunger. I see the same commercials, with those little kids, starving, and very depressed. I watch those kids and I go, ‘F–k, I know the FILM crew could give this kid a sandwich!’ There’s a director five feet away going, ‘DON’T FEED HIM YET! GET THAT SANDWICH OUTTA HERE! IT DOESN’T WORK UNLESS HE LOOKS HUNGRY!!!’ But I’m not trying to make fun of world hunger. Matter of fact, I think I have the answer. You want to stop world hunger? Stop sending these people food. Don’t send these people another bite, folks. You want to send them something, you want to help? Send them U-Hauls. Send them U-Hauls, some luggage, send them a guy out there who says, ‘Hey, we been driving out here every day with your food, for, like, the last thirty or forty years, and we were driving out here today across the desert, and it occurred to us that there wouldn’t BE world hunger, if you people would LIVE WHERE THE FOOD IS! YOU LIVE IN A DESERT! YOU LIVE IN A F–KING DESERT! NOTHING GROWS OUT HERE! NOTHING’S GONNA GROW OUT HERE! YOU SEE THIS? HUH? THIS IS SAND. KNOW WHAT IT’S GONNA BE A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW? IT’S GONNA BE SAND! YOU LIVE IN A F–KING DESERT! GET YOUR STUFF, GET YOUR SHIT, WE’LL MAKE ONE TRIP, WE’LL TAKE YOU TO WHERE THE FOOD IS! WE HAVE DESERTS IN AMERICA — WE JUST DON’T LIVE IN THEM, A–HOLES!”
Never heard of "stockholder's itch", but I guarantee that any private company that was run the same way would be bankrupt. I'm a govt. contractor, and have observed wastefulness on a regular basis for over 30 years in person.
I'm all for essential services...fire, police, military, etc. But most of the remainder could go away, and we'd all be much better off for it.
No govt. office will ever offer to reduce their budget, or work to become more efficient on their own. So, the only way to deal with it is to cut their budgets.
The US system of healthcare is far from a free market. There's no competition, and we've screwed ourselves by allowing ambulance chasers to drive up the costs for everyone.
Please link to any national level Libertarian site that indicates we should do away with essential public services. And, I'm no fan of Beck's, but I have listened to him, and highly doubt that he'd be in favor of that either...but if you can't find a quote, I'll openly eat my words here.
No they can't. He's not in their jurisdiction, so they have no legal authority over him. They can try to bill him, but good luck collecting from someone who's lost everything.
Because that's exactly what it is. Show me anywhere on a national level that the Libertarian party has demanded the removal of essential services. Complaining about taxes isn't the same thing because there is clearly way too much waste in govt.
NO, you bill them for the cost, not the missed payment. The entire cost. which I believe is about 7500 dollars.
Sending a bill doesn't mean that you'll get paid, and isn't enforceable. And if he doesn't pay, they can't legally fine him...he doesn't live in their jurisdiction. They could try to bill, and take him to court when he doesn't pay, but that's simply not a viable solution either. Why do people keep missing these points that have already been laid out above!?!
What's a "volume button"? Is that any different than any other button? Does it have a label on it that says "this button only controls volume, and nothing else, always"?
You can design for either an open system, or follow a style guide. Open systems give you all the freedom to do as you desire, but lack consistency. On the other hand following the style guide methodology, users will always know that certain things work a certain way. Queue up the Mac vs. PC fanboy arguments
I was a longtime Mac user (haven't had one in about five yrs though), and always loved being able to load up a product and intuitively knowing how to operate it w/o having to RTFM. On the other hand I often yearned for a bit more freedom to do some things that Apple wouldn't allow...I like to tinker, and have electronics and software background.
Apples consumers generally love it, so there's no arguing that they don't have a good working business model. Obviously, one size doesn't fit all.
As a former cold-warrior, let me just say one thing. Bullshit.
Now, my statement is about as insightful as yours, both lacking in anything that can be linked to as evidence. So, if you'd like to logically debate the issue, I'd be happy to oblige.
I find it interesting that "police not doing their jobs" is a universal problem. That's something that has always bothered me. Unless it's a violent or significant crime, the police just aren't interested. I guess it's similar in the UK (I'm in the US).
While I'll agree on the general principle, I believe that most police are acting just like you or I would do in most circumstances. We all have tasks that we prioritize, and if I spend my time working on the little ones at work, I'll find myself out of a job very quickly. You don't get any headlines or kudos for rescuing a cat out of a tree, or directing traffic. And with budgets the way they are, it's unlikely that the govt. would hire someone to do that kind of work fulltime, especially for no political or financial gain.
Oh my, who would want to interact with a real human!?!
2. It allows them time to think and come up with a good response.
God forbid they learn to think on their feet, an actual useful skill that could lead to something like employment...GASP!
3. You don't have to listen to them thinking.
Most adults don't listen to others that way, but teens haven't had enough practice to learn phone etiquette.
4. It's cheaper.
Maybe, maybe not...depends on what plan you have.
5. You can send the same text to more than one person.
Semi-useful
6. They can reply at their leisure if they are busy.
No different than a call. If you're busy, you don't answer, and it goes to voicemail.
7. You have a written record of their response.
I can see where it might be useful, but that's likely to be rare.
8. You don't annoy other people by talking (e.g. on a train).
This is a good one, but I would point more toward the privacy of not having others listening into the call.
As is probably obvious, I'm an old fart, but have adapted to using text messages as well. I've found many situations where it's very useful, for example, I get stuck in long meetings where I can send out multiple texts on my crackberry, and not disturb anyone with my phone usage.
True, many of us type faster, and read faster, so text can improve the speed of communication. Notice that I only said speed, not effectiveness, since there is no visual/aural feedback.
I'm the father of a 19 yr old, who essentially refuses to call her parents (from an out-of-state college), but will respond to texts all day, so I've adapted to improve the lines of communication with her. There was a very interesting and enlightening article in the Washington Post just about a month ago (link below) on the generational differences regarding use of the phone vs. text. According to it, while most of us older Boomers think the youngsters are just being rude, not answering our calls or voicemails, the kids feel that calls are an imposition on their time, and maybe even rude. When I shared that article with my daughter, it was helpful to us to discuss these views, and how to better our own communications.
Also, even if the principle of free speach has any backing, Rackspace is not obliged to broadcast it for you.
If a company does something that I consider wrong, saying that they aren't legally obliged to do the right thing, doesn't rate as a defense of their behaviour to me.
Okay, let's say I rent my house in downtown Detroit to you, and you start holding KKK meetings there. While I personally detest your position, I fully support your right to speak your mind, and would defend your right to do so, just not on my property. However, I don't want my house burned down, so I ask you to cease and desist, or move out (don't know if I could legally get away with that, but you get the similarity here I hope). Am I wrong for asking you to take your silly ass position somewhere else? I don't think so.

If you and your girlfriend aren't careful, you'll get Baby 1.0. That'll wake you up very early, and without fail.
No, they're as safe as houses. They use the iPhone rhythm method app for contraception so what could possibly go wron.... oh wait.
You realize there's a name for women who use the rhythm method...
Mommy
Bah! Stop trying to pull the wool over our eyes!

Yeah, there are frauds out there who claim they can cure cancer with magic charms, and that's dangerous.
Just come out and say what you really mean...male enhancement

This is what happens when you don't have socialism.
Highly off-topic, and trollish of an AC. You mods should be ashamed.

Yes, so our nukes in Arizona are safe.

Damn, where's my troll hammer? I was right there with you in the first sentence, but then you had to go and get all 5th grader on us.
Clearly, if the plane had not been flown by two idiot pilots, it wouldn't have overshot.
In all seriousness, (and as a private pilot), this was very likely a case of them entering incorrect data into their nav gear.
I'm a right hand amputee you insensitive clod!
Okay, I'm lying, but only typing this with my left hand. :-)
Wish I had mod points. You just achieved two sequential asshat posts, congratulations!
