  1. Like making money pretending to be an engineer, those are simply, "illegal."

In the US, 'engineer' is a protected term. Aren't we still talking about the realm of the illegal here?

No, no it's not. Professional Engineer maybe, but it varies from state to state.

I was given the title "Field Design Engineer" back in the early 80s by a Fortune500 company, when I only had an Associate's degree, and was really a computer technician, and doing very little actual design. "Field" just meant that I worked at customer sites.

Depends. I stopped mowing my own lawn about a dozen years ago when I started working on a project that required 6-7 day workweeks. I was getting paid for all of my time, and my time was certainly worth more in the office than the $40 it cost me, and saved me 1.5-2 hrs./week. Anything that I would normally do, that I can pay someone else to do for less than what I'm earning, is generally worth it to me...even if I decide to sit on my ass and watch a football game while Molly Maid cleans my house. That's because your time off is important too...you don't run a marathon, and then start another one without a break.

Still not as bad as bottled water when the stuff from your tap is perfectly drinkable.

In general, I'll agree. However, drinkability varies from location to location. That said, I'm perfectly happy with my filtered water.

  6. As someone who started investing with $600 worth of an electric utility stock back in '82, which is now worth over $33k, (not to mention all of the additional funds I invested over that period) I'd beg to differ. It's not rocket science. But it does require you to do some homework, and not pretend to be a day trader...you might as well go to Vegas. I suspect you don't actually know a lot of folks with $100k to invest.

  7. Without that money going to the corporation and shareholders, you wouldn't actually have all of those shops and jobs for those people you "deserve" it.

  8. We used to, but often got grief because people would forget to turn off their machines at the office, which becomes a fire hazard. The up side is that we've now got free K-cups

  9. "Tea snobs who like tea don't use tea bags."

FTFY...just like the vast majority of people who can't tell the difference between a $10 bottle of wine and something in the $100+ range, but turn their noses up.

  10. "What's more important to you? Your time or your money. For a lot of people it's the former."

And to Mr O'Leary's point, that's the reason that many of those people will continue to live payday to payday, and complain that they don't make a living wage.

If you're there as an escape from kids, the office, etc., that's one thing. If you're there for the coffee, you're a fool.

My kid started going to Starbucks when she was in high school, because all the cool kids were doing it. Then she couldn't figure out why her allowance was covering all the things they were supposed to. It was one of the lessons that I let her figure out, because she wasn't getting more for that from us.

There are already regulations requiring financial institutions to report transactions of $10k (or multiple smaller transactions adding up to more) or more. Why should this be any different? So, if your argument is that they should be able to collect that information at all, then you probably don't much care about tax evasion, and money laundering. Otherwise, your only logical argument is with respect to the figure. Too small of a number just isn't worth the IRS's time. $10 - $20k seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I now see it as inevitable with the future of automation and AI. UBI doesn't mean you need to stop working, and testing in various locations has already shown that people generally like to remain active in some kind of work. Typically, UBI doesn't cover enough for much in the way of non-necessities...you couldn't afford a vacation w/o additional income. fivethirtyeight.com did an excellent article if you could be bothered to read up on it.
