  1. Re:In support on Microsoft Responds to IE Criticism · · Score: 0

You either are lying, have no clue about what spyware you have, have completely disabled acitive scripting, or visit a total of 5 websites. If you use IE you WILL get spyware. How do you think they discovered the latest gaping hole in IE? From analyzing a spyware install. You don't have to click yes on anything, it will install exploits without asking you a thing. IE is fine at browsing, but the security issues with it should drive off any user even marginally concerned about their computer becomeing a DDOS zombie or spam relay. The most frustrating thing is all the developers that are coding to be IE speciic instead of open standards. We have been forced to disable active scripting at my work, and can't switch to another browser because of all of our web based apps that only work with IE. Thanks for the open standard compliance MS.

  2. My self-destructing PERL script on What Was Your Worst Computer Accident? · · Score: 0

I spent an entire day writing a PERL script to sort through a bunch of Snort logs for me. It would basically look through all the logfiles in a directory, combine them, process them through snortalog and send the results to a web server. Next, it archived all the logs in another directory and cleaned out the starting directory to await all the new logs for the next night. After a ton of work it was finally ready. I ran it and smiled as it performed flawlessly on all the test logs I put in the directory. My joy turned to horror as I realized I had run the script from within the log directory, and the script deleted itself when it wiped the raw logs. Note to self: ALWAYS backup my scripts in another spot in case of script-suicide.

While I can control what sites *I* visit, I cannot control what sites the users visit without serious political issues. I personally don't use IE, but it is the company standard which means I get to deal with all the problems. I'm looking forward to all the whining I'm going to be hearing since I just turned off active scripting through our group policy. I imagine many other security people are in the same boat.

Not being a physics guy I could be wrong, but why couldn't it still be accelerating from the bat hit? It takes time for it to reach top speed does it not? If I hit a ball, it is not going full speed the moment of contact, or am I wrong?

Yeah, except you are wrong about the franchise thing. cLets examine the urrent charts for japan sales: 1. Hoshi no Kirby: Kagami no..., Nintendo, GBA: 188,000 (new) ---Franchise (Kirby)--- 2. Dragon Quest V, Square Enix, PS2: 60,300 (1,518,500 total) ---Franchise (Dragon Warrior)--- 3. Crayon Shin-chan, Banpresto, GBA: 18,900 (new) ---Not a Game franchise, but based on TV show--- 4. Monster Hunter, Capcom, PS2: 10,500 (271,000 total) ---Franchise (Monster Hunter)--- So, the lesson is they are just as much sequel/franchise whores as we are. I get tired of people that hold up the Japanese culture as being somehow "better" and we are just stupid Americans. Idiots exist on both sides and so do game companies that just want to cash in on the sequel.

You guys that are complaining about the look of the people are missing the whole point. The art is about the suits. They obviously do not "design" the people. It's all up to the casting person and the director. WETA is just doing the effects and designs. They could draw a 45 year old italian dude in the suit, but that doesn't mean they are going to cast him!! The suit designs look cool and the majority of this stuff looks very faithful to the series. I am excited personally.

  11. Re:OT but curious, why XP Pro for gaming? on SCO Responds to OSDL Legal Aid Announcement · · Score: 1

I believe you are wrong. While 95/98/ME does suck, XP Home and Pro are both derived from the NT/2000 line. XP Pro is a superset of home and has some additonal features mainly for buisness apps, such as dual-processer support. They are basically the exact same OS, but Home as a few things stripped out to make companies pony up the extra dough for Pro.

I was helping a friend get setup last night to play Final Fantasy XI and he kept getting SSL failures when setting up an account. I couldn't figure out what the hell was wrong but this would explain it. You would think they would have dealt with this earlier. Seems alot of companies are getting caught unaware. Luckily we updated our webservers already last month when we got the letter.
