If there's no slack in there, though, then when you push down hard on the mouse in a fit of "oh shit gotta dodge that" it'll grind against the top and stop, so it can't be designed that way.

My logitech mouse has never given me any grief, even plugged into USB which used to mean latency death in any and all games. The single-speed sampling opticals are crap for games, they have a distinct tendency to go backwards and jitter when sitting still. This thing doesn't have any of those problems, will likely never need maintenance, looks cool sitting on my desk, and cost $30. I just can't see buying old technology that I know is crap anyway. Does that not mean anything? Especially on a website where MS users are a minority, and ones whom are willing to burn their Karma to back it up are a minority within that minority?

We've got 27 windows servers here. One administrator for all. Spends about 1/4 of his time actually administering them and our network (Includes regular security updates and patches and the like). Haven't had a problem here due to a down server in a long time, and last time it did happen it was a raid controller that died.

It sounds like your administrator is highly skilled. That's great. I'm sure there are plenty of highly skilled, very well-paid admins who take care of large NT deployments, and don't have security problems. The historical problem with NT servers is that security and stability have been secondary priorities to features. Microsoft has basically admitted this and now swears that they've changed their priorities in light of it. The problem is that they've been rushing to market for so long now that even dropping everything for a month to do security reviews isn't putting a noticeable dent in the problem.

As a Windows power user, but rather inexperience with servers, I was able to set up a top-quality hardware NT server running only a few services to be fast and stable, but I still missed a glaring security hole that was (to my knowledge) never breached only because of a firewall and appropriate care taken administering the other machines behind it. Patch management was still a nightmare.

As a Linux novice, server experience mostly from the aforementioned NT server, I was able to set up a fast, stable Linux server running several services on hardware that was literally assembled from what was laying around, most of it from old bargain desktops. I had a friend of mine quite a lot more expert than myself check out the setup, and he confirmed that it was in fact as secure as my patch level, which was very easy to manage.

I am not by any stretch of the imagination an open source fanatic. I generally prefer the best tool for the job, and in that capacity Windows has failed me time after time after time, with occasional modest successes. With Linux, I've never spent significant effort on the same problem twice, because the design philosophy of the OS and the typical applications is sufficiently open that I can understand why and how what I'm changing is solving the problem, rather than rebooting and praying. I've learned much more about Linux and other unix OSes in the past couple of years than I have in a decade of working with Windows, making Linux a progressively better tool for the job as it sits running on the server.

My anecdotal experience is not by itself statistically significant, but I hear it far more frequently than I hear the reverse. It blows a gigantic hole in the Windows TCO claims. Sure Windows is getting better, but that blows a gigantic hole in their claim that Linux is less mature.

Of course, TCO is a business term. This is a techie forum, so there's a visceral distrust here of anything that breaks without explanation, as NT is more apt to do. Even if Linux broke just as often as NT and just as badly, we'd like Linux better, because we learn a lot more about the problem. We even get to go fix it ourselves too, which is why bug parity between Windows and Linux wouldn't last very long.

Cool work....I'd like to see how it fares after a few intense games.

And to those of you who are wondering why hes using that mouse and keyboard: if he knew that this mod was going to be so popular, I'm sure he would have bought someting better. This mod wasn't supposed to be an expensive one ;).

I am just a unix man who gets dragged into windows to often.

You might live in a world of properly setup windows but I do not.

I live in a world of properly setup unix and nowadays linux machines who is dragged screaming and kicking into the windows world. (and why is that the unix department has more accounts, less hardware and few people yet it is the windows department who always needs our help?)

So I get to explain to PHB's why I am not coming into work on a weekend to patch my machines during the lastest worm outbreak. (A. it is a windows worm not a unix worm B. I can patch from home during the unix scares wich do happen and just as often as windows worms)

I know that windows has gotten better but the scars remain. And MS better do a whole lot more work before it convinces me.

Oh and comparing 95 to XP is not a good example. I had no end of trouble with XP and that is on a pure gaming station. 2k3 does better it might actually be usuable (not really since it doesn't have good mouse hover detection What is that? explorer two panes right? Good hover detection would make the pane scroll over wich you hold the mouse when you move the mouse wheel, simple thing that Windows just doesn't do). XP just gave me more scars.

I also still have the feeling that IIS requires more hardware per hit then Apache does. This is ofcourse purely subjective as it depends greatly on the type of site.

Still knowing all this I can't help coming down like a ton of bricks on an IIS runner. Not fair but who says I am fair? You are dealing with bitter unix people who have to deal with windows admins unlike you who don't know their job and yet at constant threat of losing our job to them.

That just pisses me off because it's personal, and there's no need for it.

As for your recent dealings with windows, you have proven beyond a doubt that you do not know enough about windows to be administering it.

      1) Discrediting XP based on the fact that you had issues using it as a gaming machine. Did all those games run with no problem on Linux? Or did you first have to ensure that you had suitable, stable drivers for everything on your system and that the game was available for that platform? It's the most stable gaming platform MS has ever developed, and there are actually a couple million XBox users out there who will back me up on this even though I wouldn't touch an XBox with a ten foot pole.

      2) Mouse interaction in MS windows is just different than in X. Why would you just expect MS windows to automatically focus on hover? Oh, you've made an assumption about windows. How many more assumptions have you made?
(BTW, there is an activate-focus-on-hover setting, and another to determine how long you must hover for this to occur.)
