While *nix-based OSes are forging their way towards the desktop, Windows is the most popular desktop OS. How secure do you think users make their Windows boxes? How secure are the firewalls that people put up (ZoneAlarm, BlackICE, etc.)? How many Windows users do you think get their machines broken into?
What about Bawls? Bawls supposedly keeps you awake for a LOOOOONG time, and not make you jittery like regular caffeine. (I, myself, need to buy some to see if that's true)

A bottom-of-the-line Krazy Kenny's system costs $239-$249 (depending on which week it is). Add the monitor for $100 more, and WinXP for yet another $100 (although they do ship a Linux distro with the box). Total of $339 at the least, but you have to get an OS, and (unless this is a second computer) you'll have to pay more to get anything legit.
Yeah, right. I called it. They have some cheep consumer answering machine. And, they can handle all the calls almost all the time (except when I'm attacking them).
I've probably rung up $50 in charges on his phone bill. According to him, I am one weird individual, a huge piece of slime, a punk, and various other names. His address is "12345678910 11th Street, Up Yours." People like this need to die. I'm actually going to try to DoS his server by getting his SMTP server info through the header info. (Yes, I do have a spam account set up). Set up POP3 accounts (so you can use your full blown e-mail program) with free providers and have this guy spam you. Start overwhelming his server with this shit, and it will go down quickly.
Internet Explorer is for spying on you, ripping off personal details about you and your system and stealing your computer cycles and Internet bandwidth.
Do some reasearch on the web and get the hell off of Internet Explorer!
Are you sure about that? It will run some pretty big stuff. Think OPENSTEP. You might want to see this guy's whole GUI site, and you don't get his frames by going to my first link, so click here.
I think that/. needs to start moderating whole articles. The editors need to have karma too, so when a dupe is posted, the (Score:-1, Redundant) mod will actually hurt editors. Been there for as long as the recycle bin. Here goes:
1. Right click on Recycle Bin. 2. Click Properties. 3. Click Global. 4. Click Use one setting for all drives. 5. Click Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted. 6. ??? 7. Profit!
At least when a computer crashes, it doesn't directly kill anybody.
Life support machine gets h4x0r3d by some stupid 31337 5kr1p7 k!66!3. Aforementioned script kiddie brings down life support machine, and some old guy dies.
Windows 9x/ME multiuser put crap in C:\Windows\Profiles(?)\User\My Documents. If it wasn't multiuser, it was C:\My Documents. If you didn't have a 95 My Documents folder, I don't think the OS actually makes it. My computer came with one already there, but I think MS Office 2000 already did that. (95 and 97 also do this, AFAIK)
I haven't used an NT4 box in a LONG time, but I think parent is right about the NT profile location.
I believe that Windows ME also has this functionality. Opera refuses to co-exist with it on my school's WinXP network (has an error when starting ZipFolders), so essentially all of the computers have WinZip installed.
As for grandparent's comment about mounting drives under the main NTFS filesystem, here's some insight into why this is possible: I've heard that there's hidden POSIX compliance somewhere within NT. This is why the US Government will use NT4. (They have rules stating that the OS MUST be POSIX compliant. It doesn't necessarily mean it has to USE it's POSIX compliance.)
Anyway, I thought that the DMCA didn't allow you to break encryption algorithms. I consider/.'s spam-proofing an encryption algorithm, and breaking it (i.e., decrypting the e-mail address), would be illegal according to the DMCA.
HW failures can cause shit to happen. My//c isn't in the greatest shape. It crashes on AW2 saves. (OK, OK, so it doesn't crash anywhere else, but still... It has a 90% MS-based ROM.) Keep in mind, parent was talking about a IIGS, which I believe can multitask, and is 16-bit. Any perceived 8-bit MTing is simple "exit the program, start the other, wait until the other is closed, start the first program"
When Contiki gets better, and the The Final Ethernet cartridge is released to the public./. has an article on Contiki. It gets your C64 on the 'net, with a WEBSERVER! They once had a modified Contiki system run streaming audio (off of a cassette) and a VNC server run THROUGH A SLASHDOTTING for two weeks.
Protable? It actually was portable. Apple (and other companies) made LCD's, and you could hack a battery up to work with it. Have you ever seen an Apple ][e? It's HUGE (about as big as a modern desktop PC with the KB on the front)!

Well, it'll never be commercial, but... (and it works on the GBC too!)

Ever heard of Traf-O-Data? The first business venture by Gates/Allen. It used an 8008 to count cars running over a piece of rubber.
It's a custom Embedix based distro.

Attach the damn thing as a gif! "^!@6r@.gif" would get through!
After all, police do this on a daily basis to get child predators.
What's that? Oh, have you tried uce@ftc.gov? Of course, if you get spam that doesn't try to sell you something, they won't take it.

Here's your average ignition switch:

Some cars will let you take the key out on OFF. (Shoot, I've got a car with a fscked up interlock that will let you take it out anywhere)
