I've heard that NT has a 300MB file cache limit that is supposedly well documented. PC Week did a Samba benchmark with NT vs. Linux and their conclusions were so bad (for NT) they didn't even publish them. This was because NT would not use over 300MB for its file cache while Linux would use 900+MB.
How did Mindcraft get around this, or was it actually documented in their report? Heh, I guess I should probably read the entire thing first huh? Naa!
Also, after some research on why Apache performance dropped considerably at one point, it does look like they hit the 1024 file descriptor limit. Alan Cox has a patch for 2.2.x that brings this up to 10,000+ and theoretically millions. Check the recent Kernel Traffic mailing list for details. Did they do any research at all for this report, I mean come on!
I heard a rumor that if you inserted the Super Mario Bros. game cartridge backwards into a NES then you got to play the XXX version. Luigi humps the Princess or something like that...
Pu-leaze! This kind of thought is bringing us back into the stone age.
Guys...this is neat software. After reading the website it took me just few moments to download the software, load up my old copy of Windows 95 (actually, that took a while), and setup the network to use IP Masq. I'm now on my K6-266 Linux box running Internet Explorer 4.0 in Windows 95...I love it! BSOD I fear you no more;)
Sure speed could be better, and the price is way too high for the average joe...but try to be pragmatic. Good software is _good software_, free or not. I still support Bochs (tried every snapshot in the last 12 months) but I won't lose any sleep speeding a little cash for VMware.
I'm sick of this! Everyone is either closing shop or leaving the US to work on non-linux related stuff. The Open Source movement is crumbling like a house of cards and its only 11:00am!
There is nothing wrong with use PINE to do email. I have been for over a year and other than the fools that send me WINMAIL.DAT attachments it works fine! Hell, even works via telnet so I can be almost anywhere on the planet and still get my mail.
Anyone think this "break-up" of Microsoft will lead to perhaps Office 2000 and IE 5 for Linux/FreeBSD? If your answer is no then this reorganisation means ZIP. It really seems that the only way Office and IE (and other MS products) will get ported to anything other than Windows is if the DOJ breaks them up. Too bad for them.
On the other hand I really don't desire those products running on Linux anyway. StarOffice (bloated but functional...and free), WP8, and KOffice all have more than adaquate functionality.
Well stop using that DOS box as your file server! I have long files names, with spaces even, and the music is broken up into gendre's. Thanks Micros~1!!!
Theres...too many...of them! Okay guys, only the first few people got a full download. Now I'm completely out of bandwidth and people are timing out. I suggest trying another mirror for the time being. Sorry:(
I got the CD and have it installed on my Red Hat 5.2 box. It works super, once you understand the installation process;) Our Oracle DBA at work swears that on the same hardware, Oracle 8 on Linux is 2 to 4 times faster than the same setup on NT. Not have an NT box myself I can't verify this however.
And unless you have WebDB (or is DBWeb?) you have to run the gnu client utilities off a Windows box. SQL*Plus is more than good enough for me however.
If you don't like the fonts in Netscape (or X in general) get the True Type font server called xfstt. I now have Arial, MS Comic, and all those other Windows fonts that make for a better browsing experience. Yes it works, and it works very well. There are binary and source RPMS at http://rufus.w3.org/ Try this and stop complaining about fonts.
The best part of the/. effect is what happens when polls are mentioned on slashdot. It doesn't happen much anymore, but when worthy candidates crop up (People's most beautiful person of 1998 - hank the wonder drarf???) they usually get hammered pretty hard. Even the other day I saw a poll on ZeeDee Net where one of the answers to the question "Will your next desktop be Windows 98 or NT" was like "Neither - We'll all be using Linux!"...and it won with like 70% of the vote!
The/. effect is a powerful thing, use it wisely Rob;)
I just installed Oracle 8 on my Red Hat 5.2 box. Compiling PHP3 support into Apache only took moments and I've very happy with it. Speed is excellent, about 2 to 4 times faster than a similar setup on NT 4.0 I think Oracle knows a good thing when they see it;)
Yup, and that extra cash you could probably hire a much better Linux sysadmin ;)

Sorry, whats the full URL? I can't seem to find it on their site.

heh, I already got the day off May 19th. I requested it a month ago in anticipation of this craziness. Remember, the early bird gets w0rms!

Please stop this madness!

Another excellent site for Linux gamers. Complete with news, forums, howtos and links. Great site, learned a lot there about how to optimize Quake.
Hey, that used to work anyway. Just a bunch of one's. Haven't needed it since I switched to Linux tho. Thank God for that!

Is that to say USB is fully functional now? Last I heard it was partially working...but not ready for prime time.
I don't believe you. And if I did, I would say you need to get the latest service pack!
I think these new features are turning /. into a portal of sorts. Heh, someone mentioned it a while back but its worth repeating...my ass is a portal.
Get the mpeg version, its much less taxing on your system and looks nearly as good.

...mix worse than Water and Oil. This is a numb idea guys. Stick with giant sized fans and heat sinks.
