Apparently, this file system does not have quota or ACL support? As per the SGI white-paper on the XFS filesystem, those features are on the TODO list.
Is this something we will be able to put in given the source, and call the whole thing ext3fs, and release it in Linux 2.4?
Good filesystems are some of the most difficult code in an operating system, so having an excellent base like XFS will certainly help. Thank you SGI!
What settings are you using to get this? On my K6-266 running in 640x480 I get ~60fps on a VII 12MB. Visit LinuxGames and check out the old and new forums for speed tips. There are environmental variables that you can set to increase your framerate dramatically.

Great news! Up until now I wasn't sure if it would or not. After upgrading to RedHat 6.0 I'm finding a couple of commercial apps choke on glibc 2.1 (like StarOffice 5.0). Again, this is great news, I can't wait to get my hands on this game!
Now of course if I were a Mindcraft tester, benchmarking Linux vs. NT, and we all got on a bus to Redmond where are test labs were located, I'd kinda figure out what was going on;)
I was thinking this myself. While its not true that everyone runs stock settings on their production servers, not everyone has Linus Torvalds and Alan Cox at their desposal either.
Computer Reseller did a test with stock software, albeit much less hardware horsepower than the Mindcraft machines, and Linux came away the winner by miles.
I would suggest then that they are in the wrong line of work. Benchmarking requires honestly, diligence, and impartiality. If they willingly sell their "fixed" benchmarks to the highest bidder then they really shouldn't expect anyone to believe their work.
Seriously, this is a scam. Step back for a minute and you will see it clear as day.
...that "benchmarking" product A and product B, while getting paid from product A's manufacturer, using product A's consultants, and using product A's own testing fascilities...IS INHERENTLY BIASED!!! Regardless if product A is actually better than product B or not. My God, its so simple yet they can't figure it out!
Mindcraft has no credibility left. Worse, now they have an axe to grind because of how badly they were beat up in the mainstream press (ABCnews.com, Salon, Slashdot, etc). Any "benchmarking" they do from here on in should be ignored completely. If we can learn something from this, such as the need for better documentation, then at least thats a positive for us.
You can try. I couldn't get NT to stay up more than 7 days in a row. Thats 7 days of hard work BTW, not just sitting there idle. On the other hand, I've been doing development, file servering, firewall, for months on Linux without rebooting. The whole NT way of thinking does not lend itself very well to prolonged uptimes.
Oh, install this new notepad replacement? You must reboot. Come on...
I don't think so, for instance there was no/opt/kde directory on my vanilla RH 6.0 install. However, any good Makefile or./configure will be able to determine where KDE is living, whether its/usr or/opt/kde. When I had to recompile KVirc under the new system, I did need to change one line in the./configure program which was hardcoded to/opt/kde (tsk tsk!)
Well true, I didn't have to upgrade, I was perfectly happy with RedHat 5.2 But it was a free download and I had a lazy weekend so what the hell.
Now obviously there are some vast improvements to the system. o Linux 2.2.5 o glibc 2.1 (which works great _expect_ for Staroffice 5.0) o KDE 1.1.1 o Gnome 1.0 o XFree86 3.3.3 o Netscape 4.5 o GIMP 1.0 o Samba 2.0 o misc upgrades to all other packages
I really couldn't ask for a better suite of software than this! IMHO it was worth the time spent upgrading. I would encourge others, especiall pre 5.2 users, to upgrade to 6.0
I wonder if they take into consideration the cost of Windows support incured by businesses. Crashes, dll conflicts, viruses, incompatabilies, required hardware upgrades, etc etc. That alone costs many many millions of dollars in support and consulting hours.
Most likely this is just another report Microsoft has paid someone to produce. It doesn't mean squat.
Not sure, are K6-266 cpus 3DNow! capable? To tell you the truth, MMX/MMX2/3DNow! does not impress me to begin with. But if you can show me how to get an extra 10fps if I do then by all means!;)
I just tried it with a K6-266 & VooDoo 1, and although you definately want to get a better system, you actually can play with this setup. There are 5 or so pre-defined performance settings you can select in graphics mode, and if you select "fastest" it seems to run okay. Of course you lose all coloring and quality, but its playable at least! I haven't tried net play yet, and I'm still attempting to tweak the performace, but this game still looks like a winner.
Oh man, I couldn't get through the whole article because I was on the floor busting a gut laughing and crying at the same time!
I honestly can't believe some people think the way they do. Its really too bad he didn't give his email address anywhere on the page because I am really tempted to give him a (polite) line-by-line rebuttle for every FUD filled paragraph he spewed out.
If ignorance is bliss, this guy has got to be on clowd 9.
I don't think they install programs using the same directory layout, but ya, why shouldn't they be compatible? Grab the *.src.rpm and recompile that if you have too.

195Mbps vs 114Mbps
Its not all bad news!

Excellent idea, Mindcraft are you listening?
;)

Red Hat as essentially made the KDE directory /usr from the original /opt/kde
/opt/kde/bin are now /usr/bin and things in /opt/kde/share go into /usr/share
So things in
The merits of this are debatable. But them are the facts.

As mentioned in an earlier post, you need to cd /usr/local/games/q3test/ and then exectue ./linuxquake3
Make sure you have installed the Glide.rpm as per instructions. I've done all this and it works slicker than snot!
Works perfect in Red Hat 6.0 BTW for anyone curious.
That might explain your beef.

Way to go id!
Did RPM 3.0 make it into this new release of Red Hat? I could look for myself if some of the mirrors actually worked...
...or so I hear. Sorry I can't recall the reference, but I'm pretty sure it comes right from Red Hat themselves.
As others have pointed out, no sense cooking this guy to a crisp with the old flamethrower, but a few minutes in the oven on low should do the trick ;)

I can't get it to save to disk, it always opens with the stupid pluggin. How did you do it?

I imagine it also takes a PIII-450 to play back these files as well. I don't even wanna imagine how long it takes to encode...heh
Yup, and that extra cache you could probably hire a much better Linux sysadmin ;)
