So, make your "Always on connection" one that isn't. When you aren't using your broadband connection, turn it off. Plain and simple. This is better than any firewall can provide you and it will give you that wonderful false sense of security while you are away from your computer.
Look, if you really want to protect yourself, make sure you have at least a basic firewall and at least up-to-date virus protection. I personally use AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/ antivirus because there is a free version for personal use. As far as a firewall goes, Zonealarm from zonelabs works out pretty good. And it doesn't hurt to scan for spyware every now and then.
For the really paranoid, install a content filter like censornet and block all the advertising sites you come across. (We have done this at the organization I work for and it has reduced spyware and virus incidents considerably)
Crap, I held out for 2 weeks hoping they would come out with 10.2. So got tired of waiting, downloaded and installed 10.1 LAST NIGHT until 11:45! GRRRR.... I just wasted 2 cds on 10.1... Oh well, at least I don't have to download firefox now... seperately...
Man this guy sounds bitter and angry. How big of an ego do you have to have to say that your product is better, even when you admit considerably fewer vendors support your product?
Buddy, if you happen to read this (which I know you won't because you probably wouldn't touch Slashdot with a ten foot pole cause it runs on a Linux box) do some growing up. Code doesn't get accepted by users because its uber-secure. If that were the case I'd put 'Hello World' on a CD and sell it for ten bucks a pop. People buy code for usability, plain and simple. Even hardcore Unix (yes, UNIX) admins like a little usability.
My thoughts, 1. I never could argue with that cute pencil-chewing librarian who would occasionally look over the horn-rimmed glasses. (Wish I still had her number *cry*)
2. I could never argue with a robot that zoommed around picking up stuff.
Now, in reality, The idea of a robot zooming around picking up stuff, ultimately controlled by a librarian just rocks.
For any system to work this way, it would have to be in collaboration with librarians. The Sonoma Library is a pretty cool concept. Having books lost for 2 decades is not. Personally I have found that running around a library for 2 hours trying to find a book that should be in place X (according to Dewey) is really lame. Some students have more important things to do, like post on Slashdot while putting off writing that 15 page paper on why the FCC should keep Amateur Radio around...
I work for a Cell Phone company. As I'm reading a bunch of these posts I notice most of the people here are compaining about 2 year contracts and stupid little crap like their current plan. My best advice to anyone moving their number to a different company is to walk into a company owned (Direct) store with company trained reps. You WILL have a better experience. Here is what you can expect right now as 100,000+ phone numbers are being transfered:
Your number will NOT be functional at the new company for anywhere between 3-72 hours, if you are lucky.
If you only give minimal information, expect minimal result.
If you do not understand the new plan, you are probably not smart enough to own a cell phone (sorry, it had to be said) Understand how you use your phone now and how you want to use it and you WILL get on a better plan with ANY company.
If you think that this is a hassle for you right now, I've spent the last 4 days trying to move a customer's number over for them. That is 16 hours on the phone for one customer mind you. So don't complain, you have NO idea.
If you want to move your number, expect some delay, but if you want to keep your number and want the services the new company has to offer, remember that one or two days out of service is nothing compared to a better deal than what you had before.
Yeah, The ARRL (www.arrl.org) has been fighting BPL for quite some time now. If BPL is done incorrectly, it could prove to be very bad for TV, Radio (amateur and commercial), local communications, but great for cable companies and landline phone companies.
Dude, did I just use bandwidth for that? Granted, the concept is cool, but dude, what is up with his outfit. I guess it could be worse. I could have just downloaded another security hole, I mean patch, for windows 2k.
A cougar is a big, not so fluffy, kitty cat. Weighing in around 70 some kg. Also known as Felis concolor.
But as to what the heck this Cougaar thing does, I have no clue. Whoever can help us with this PLEASE, small words, I just got done with finals week.
Landfills? Shoot, that stuff makes great wallpaper, drink coasters, and high speed projectiles. For $5 a pop, sure, I'll burn it and I'll have a much wider variety of colors on my coffee table and walls. (Sorry Honey, I know you really wanted to have the yellow flowers, but think of it this way, now we don't have to worry about the wallpaper ruining the deposit)
