    Better to say no right away and deal with a somewhat steep, but very short disappointment curve versus agreeing and not delivering which usually results in a gradually increasing, but very long disappointment curve.

    Linux luminary Eric Raymond, who is the president of the Open Source Initiative (OSI), was sympathetic to Hafen's situation, saying that he had publicly called for an end to all DoS attacks on SCO.

    Sounds a lot like what Arafat did with Hamas... hmm... has anybody ever seen Eric Raymond & Yasser Arafat in the same place at the same time?

    1) Junk mail is profitable for the postal service. If the volume increases, they buy more equipment, hire more people, and make more money.

    2) My ratio of telemarketing calls / real calls is something on the order of 1/10. My ratio of spam / real email is something closer to 10/1.

    While I don't necessarily agree with the author that the net is dying, I don't agree with your analogies either.

    Neither the bank that holds my mortgage nor the grocery store where I shop give me anything based on how clever I am (or not).

    How can AOL on the one hand claim they are a Common Carrier (i.e., '...we're merely a conduit and not responsible for what gets put through it...') and on the other hand, selectively block incoming traffic?

    I still hate spammers though.

    So, let's assume that Microsoft implements this functionality of "forced" automatic updates. What happens if they accidentally push out an update that messes up the ability to automatically update?

    It's like the old joke:

    MS had better make very sure their functionality is more like a light bulb than a pregnant lady. :)

    For years, casinos have relied on pit bosses to personally watch the tables and do their best to manually figure out who was playing how much. But that process is extraordinarily imprecise, El Dorado's Mouchou said.

    As one who has played blackjack as both a nickel-dimer ($5-$10 bets) and as a high roller, I have noticed that pit bosses have an uncanny ability to tell how much you are up or down. I often ask pit bosses to guess how much I am up or down. They can usually tell within about $100.

    So, I have a hard time swallowing that this is a device to figure out how to comp players.
