In earlier times only the wealthy and the aristocracy has the luxury of culture. The kings and queens paid for talented artists and they were the only ones who could afford it. The common man almost never heard "professional" music or saw the "master" artists works. Now with advances in engineering almost every person in first world countries have access to mozart, and many can even afford to buy instruments and build their own recording studios with cheap computers. Engineering makes art and literature available to a much larger population. So way what you will... I believe that engineers have a larger part in bringing culture to society (all society not just the elite) than liberal arts majors. Right now there is more art/music/literature/philosophy than any human can possibly absorb in thier lifetimes... but for the first time in history many humans actually have access to it.
But does it really matter if it's causal or just a correlation? Either way if I have a tendency to overeat and I want to lose weight I'm better off hanging out with my skinny friends than my fat friends. Food is an addiction just like any other addiction. Actually in many ways it's worse becuase you can't just stop eating like you can stop drinking or stop smoking. You have to CONTROL your eating which is much harder than avoiding it. You wouldn't suggest that it's ok for a recovering cocaine addict to hang out with cocaine addicts would you? It's obvious that being around other people who have the same addiction makes it harder to break the addiction. The reason people are fat in the US is becuase we eat too much... WAY to much. Most people should throw out half the food on thier plate before they start eating. And guess what? your stomach stretches... so if you eat more every day you'll feel hungrier every day. I recently started a diet/lifestyle change with my girlfriend (she wants to lose weight and be healthier...I just want to eat better food). We started walking and eating smaller healthier meals. Within a few days we found we could no longer eat the portions we were used to and we don't feel well if we eat very fatty foods. People are fat because they take in too many calories and most people who claim they are eating 2000 calories a day and are still gaining weight are completely unaware of how much they are REALLY eating.
What do you call torture? What do I call torture? What do the democrats in congress call torture? Some people like me would define torture as physical abuse for the sake of abuse. Fingers smashed with hammers, cutting, electrocution... Other people call being forced to listen to the chili peppers torture... or having your bible flushed down the toilet... or having women see you when your naked. It's all about definitions, and frankly if I was in the government I wouldn't want to make that declaration without a very specific definition of what torture is becuase I wouldn't want to go to jail for purjury. What I do know for sure is Al-Queda in Iraq is cutting peoples faces off with piano wire... THAT is torture in my book...
If bush is overstepping his bounds constitutionally according to the congress then the judicial branch will make the decision. Just becuase the congress is saying bush is overstepping the constitution doesn't mean it's true. When the supreme court rules then we will see what happens. That is the way our system works. It is an advesarial system the three branches are constantly vying(sp?) for more power. Personally I believe the congress is overstepping thier bounds with regards to the iraq war... Congress has two powers when it comes to war 1. Declaring War 2. Providing funding for war. The president is the commander in chief and has complete control of how a war is run. If congress doesn't like it they have one and only one option. Take away the money. Until then they are just complaining like spoiled kids. They voted for the war, they gave Bush the power to go and now they don't like the way he's doing it. Be adults and take away the money... stop sniping and complaining like children. As for the possible war in Iran there is a simple solution again. If congress doesn't vote to declare war then there will be no war. I understand your fear but if you look further back into history you will see that this is not the first time the branches have been so adversarial and have tried so strongly to stretch thier powers. It was fine then and it will be fine now. I assure you Bush will be gone in 2 years. As a side note, I'm sorry I made the personal comment in my first response. I'm very happy to hear you are growing more involved in politics (even if we don't agree) becuase I think the greatest issue facing our society is the utter lack of interest in politics by our citizens.
How old are you? You sound like an impetuous child. Bush is leaving office in two years. The system is not dissolving. You are correct that most people don't care and I agree that is a problem, but it is not as bad as you think. The problem is going to continually get worse... we are not at the point of collapse...yet. Honestly I think our biggest problem isn't our president but our senate...
Removing a president from office is very simple if you follow the procedure. If you don't follow the procedure it's considered treason and I'm pretty sure it won't work. Select an act that you think qualifies as a reason for the president to be impeached and start talking about it. Talk to you representatives, talk to your neighbors, talk to the newspapers, write a blog. If people listen to you and he is impeached then democracy has worked, if people ignore you becuase they disagree then democracy has worked... just becuase the system doesn't work the way YOU want it to doesn't mean it doesn't work. It works exactly as intended... majority rule...
But you are so quick to let those good moral men and women be killed needlessly. While you may not agree with our current administration, the fact remains that they were democratically elected and in less than two years they will be gone. It is your responsibility as a citizen to make sure you elect morally responsible leaders. Counting on the "little" guy to do the right thing by putting his life in danger doesn't quite seem fair to me. YOU the voter are responsible for what your government does... not the paid soldier and not the factory worker creating the weapons. Having a few robotic planes is much less dangerous than having the big red button in the oval office. Lets not get rediculus, if the president really wanted to wipe out billions of people he could to it much more easily than building an army of robots. I'm going to say it one more time. As a voter YOU are responsible for what our military does and if you refuse to vote you are still responsible. It's our government, stop acting like it's a big bad dictator... it's not... it's the government you and I and the other 200 million voters picked and if we allow it to become the big bad dictator then we have no one to blame but ourselves. However technology is not the enemy, immoral indecent human beings are the enemy.
You are not a republican... you are a libertarian...republicans are economically AND socially conservative (i.e. it's my money I want to keep it AND I have morals and everyone else should have the same morals). Libertarians are economically conservative and socially liberal (i.e. it's my money and I want to keep it and I don't care what you do as long as I can do what I want).
There was another reply to you original post which was more eloquent than mine. Mistakes happen. This WAS a relatively minor mistake. Calling for people's heads every time a mistake is made has only one conclusion. Everyone stops doing anything. If you aren't doing anything you can't make a mistake. Mistakes must be tolerated and learned from. "The punishment should fit the crime". I doubt this was a deliberate act to harm the country. Maybe the guy should be stripped of his top secret clearance becuase MAYBE he's proven he's not capable of handling it, But calling for the directors resignation or firing is absurd. Maybe this was deliberate mis-information. There's renewed tensions between the US and russia... maybe we're warming up the cold war again... maybe we're trying to make the russians...or the chinese increase thier intelligence budgets... Of course thats not really probable...but it is certainly possible. The democrats keep calling the bush administration on procedural matters. You claim that Bush and his "cronies" have made so many mistakes... but when it comes down to it the democrats were all there too... Bad Iraq intelligence? Hmmmm the democrats all had a chance to read that report before they VOTED TO GIVE HIM AUTHORITY. But they didn't...THEY DIDN'T EVEN READ IT...becuase apparently that wasn't important. Who was in charge on the ground during katrina? Democrats... Democratic Mayor...Democratic Govenor... They had plenty of warning and plenty of chance to make a real difference on the ground but they didn't. But thats ok... Mayor Ray Nagan will get his "chocolate city" back soon enough...
Bush may do alot of things wrong... but are you really trying to blame him for some low level moron releasing a powerpoint presentation? This is not an offense that requires big heads to roll. This is a problem that requires (possibly) one or two grunts to be fired. Shit happens, you can't stop every mistake. The important thing is how it's handled and frankly, I don't think it SHOULD be a matter of public knowledge how this is handled. Maybe the guy gets a mark on his record, maybe he gets fired, maybe they change the clearing policy. Either way... please drop your Bush is responsible for every little thing that goes wrong. Ultimately yes, the buck stops at his door, but lets be realistic... I'm sure someone is going to get hammered for this... lets make sure it's the person that ACTUALLY screwed up.
You are correct. That was the point I was attempting to make. Natural selection favors those who work together. It's not a higher level thinking skill, rats who work together benefit just as much as humans
I see alot of people discussing what this means... It's all very simple. Way back in time when we all lived in small tribes we were surrounded mostly by people who we shared DNA with. Most of the people around us were immediate or extended family. We can also assume that a group of people who are sometimes generous with each other will survive better than people who are strictly selfish. If we put those two facts together and stir it with some evolution... what do you get? People who help each other are more likely to survive as a group. So if we have two tribes, one family that has only selfish tendencies and one that has generous tendencies; the generous family is more likely to survive as a whole. There's no secret here. Nothing ground breaking has happened, simply more evidence for evolution.
Kind Sir,
Let me explain a few things outside of this debate. First of all, you are NOT as intelligent as you may think. You may BELIEVE with all of your heart that George W. Bush is wrong and evil, however that is your belief and not a fact. Stop treating your opinions as fact. I am not as eloquent as some writers that have come before me, but I believe this concept is best explained in the first of the federalist papers "General Introduction" by Alexander Hamilton. Maybe you should make a point of reading the federalist papers sometime, as I am sure you have no made the effort as of yet. They explain what the founding fathers REALLY meant when they wrote the declaration of independance and the constitution. So before you take your liberal opinion and assume that (1. It is what is right. 2. It is what is best for america. 3. It is supported by the majority of america.) maybe you should open your eyes to the fact that (1. propaganda has been used in EVERY major war in history. 2. The propaganda is being used against citizens of other countries not against US citizens. 3. The word propaganda does not mean "lies" it means disseminating information about a given opinion.) The final thing you should be aware of is we are in a war. We were attacked here. They killed 3000 american citizens, and being that I live in NY perhaps it hit closer to home with me than with you (this might be an ignorant statement as I do not know where you live). However many of my friends/relatives were in or around the twin towers on 9/11. Thankfully they all made it home safe, however there are so many families that were not so lucky. You may not agree with Bush or Rumsfeld, and that is your right. You may even think they are "morons", that is also your right. However to declare that they are morons in a public forum shows your true level of ability in debate. Finally one thing just to piss you off. Please look up the ratings for the top 20 rated news shows...you might be surprised to find that the majority of americans get thier news from FOX (I am assuming that you despise FOX as much as you despise Bush). Now I make this point for a simple reason FOX news is the only major news organization which does not blatantly hate bush, and americans flock to it. You might think you are smarter than the average american, and in fact you might be. However that does NOT give you the right to make decisions becuase you know better than they do. Please, even if you completely dissagree with me, attempt to actually read the declaration of independence, constitution, and federalist papers. It will give you some better insight into what our country was ACTUALLY founded on, not what you were told it was founded on by your teachers. For instance, the constitution does not forbid government involvement in religion, it forbids the foundation of a government SPONSERED religion....very different things (btw I am not a fan of organized religion before you go off on that tangent).
after hearing about mozilla for a while and how great it was. I decided to dl it, and it really is 100 times better than IE. Now I have a machine running a dual boot...and once I learn alittle more the windows 2000 partition will probably go away. Most people don't understand the concept of free software. Honestly most people don't care. they don't know enough and would rather be able to call up microsoft when something goes wrong, but if we show them a superior product, that is likely to get a response from them.
Please don't tell me that you think 15 billion dollars is alot of money. That money for africa is a peace offering...it's nothing to us but to them it's the difference between life and death. We need to make friends in africa and 15 billion is a cheap price to pay for it. As far as Iraq is concerned it's the same issue. We went in and sturred up a hornets nest (albeit for good reason), now we have to settle the region down and make friends. Get your head out of your ass. Bush and the Republicans are busy cleaning up the messes that clinton created. Don't blame them for breaking a few eggs in the process.

Ok...so someone wants to stop watching porn..this is a great idea, let them use it. But!!! lets keep an eye on things and make sure it doesn't become more than a voluntary service. I don't see anything wrong with an employer requiring this on your work computer either...but my home computer is my business(freedom is the basis of our society)

Ok...I have a vew issues with everyones posts so far
1) HTTP is great for downloads but can anyone tell me how to UPLOAD to an HTTP server?
2) Use Passive tranfers (eliminates NAT issues on the client side)
3) GET A REAL FIREWALL/ROUTER (a good firewall/router will handle the ftp protocol even with NAT)
That being said, I don't know about having multiple FTP sites behind a firewall...I don't know of any hardware firewall that can handle that, but in any case HTTP is still useless for uploads.
