  1. Portion of the donations on Firefox Seeks Full Page Ad in New York Times · · Score: 5, Informative
The poster mentioned that a "portion" of each donation will go towards taking out the add. This made me curious as to what the rest of the donation was going towards and I found this in the FAQ.
This effort will fund not just the full-page ad, but also a large portion of other launch-related expenses and thus make an important contribution to the Mozilla Foundation's bottom line.
I also thought it would have been interesting to see a mock-up of what they are intending to submit.

So how much piracy will the new Starter Edition be 'a vehicle' for, seeing as it's functionally even less capable than Linux?
The article covers this by saying "It is likely that Microsoft would prefer the initial OS on a new PC to be a Windows variant rather than Linux, even if piracy were to continue". This makes total sense in Microsoft's eyes.

You're right, major mergers would never happen under a Democratic president. In case those four don't fit your build because they are not entertainment driven, try this one.

These happen regardless of the president in the office at the time.

    Why yes, there was.

Of course we think of things but it is never possible to think of every possible scenario when you are punching out applications with hundreds of thousands lines of code. An old college professor of mine once said: "There is no such thing as a perfect programmer. Those that think they are, are either a fool or a liar."

This is a quote from Gartner security analyst John Pescatore and it pretty much sums up my thoughts on this:
If Ford decided to issue recall notices for faulty brakes only to people who paid for extended warranty, that won't fly. That would be a horrible thing to do.

In a nutshell, is this not what MS is doing?

  9. Re:makes a lot of sense, actually on Smooth Paper-Backed e-Voting In Nevada · · Score: 5, Informative

The strange things is that the biggest slot machine manufacturer (IGT) isn't involved in the design of the system. That's acomforting as a Nevada resident because of the pull IGT has.

I am an engineer at IGT and I can tell you that there was never a chance of IGT being involved with any part of the voting process.

For instance, I can not play the games that I make (of course that is to alleviate the appearance of impropriety in case I win the big one). I would imagine that same logic would apply in the voting world. The voting machines used in Nevada were made by Sequoia out of Riverside County, California. My guess would be that they might not allow a Nevada company to develop the machines as they could not prevent me from voting and thus using the machines I developed.

In addition, the gaming industry is the most heavily regulated industry in the nation. The regulators dictate exactly what type of industries IGT can be involved with. We can not even develop internet gaming solutions even though it is gaming because of regulations. If we are not allowed to expand into select gaming markets, you can be assured that we can not be allowed to expand into a process that shapes the future of our state/nation.

On a lighter note, if we could develop the machines, what do you think the odds would be that Kerry would ever see the inside of the White House with the exception of the general tour?
