  1. Re:At first glance... on Apple to Launch Music Service? · · Score: 1

Not sure where you're shopping, but popular CDs are running $14.99 around here (DC area)

I'd say most CD's I buy are between $10 and $13, never more than that.

But I agree with the statement about 0.99 being too high...I like buying CD's for all of the other songs, which are better than the usual radio canned stuff you hear constantly.

How can you not mention the fact that you never have to buy memory cards for your XBox, or that you can create custom soundtracks from your own CDs, and listen to them from the console? The XBox is clearly the better system. I'm not a huge fan of Microsoft products, but they make the best console going.

I could be wrong, but I usually play games on my consoles. Thats why I don't have an X-Box...until I see some really high caliber (and exclusive) games coming out for X-Box, I really have no reason to buy one.

Did you know you can create custom soundtracks on your computer, and listen to them from your computer? Not only that you can burn CD's, play PC games, check your e-mail, sign on to Instant Messanger clients and surf the web...

I also love it when people throw numbers around without actually knowing what the numbers mean...its like someone comparing a AMD and P4 both running at 1.8 Ghz and saying they are the same speed.

  5. Why "I" think a lot of people are pissed at this.. on Examining Microsoft Update · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think a lot of people don't want anyone to know that they use "borrowed" versions of software that they should have payed for. They see that MS might be able to check what they are running and if its being run illegally so instead of thinking I guess the free ride might be over soon. they immediately go into defensive mode, claiming that MS is the devil and that only a "monopoly like them" would ever consider doing this.

You know what? I don't care if they can check to see what I have running on my computer. If I use an updating service made by Microsoft for products made by Microsoft, I almost automatically assume they are getting just about every piece of info off of my computer that they can get. As long as its not anything important (like e-mail, names, credit card numbers, etc) I could care less, I have nothing to hide. If MS wants to see how many people use a certain piece of software, all the power to them.

I guess it all comes down to reading the fine print and knowing that most of the time, the company is looking out for the company, not the customer.

I'm not saying MS should get away with everything it wants to do, but I do think its funny that people are surprised that a service that gets information about your computer actually gets information about your computer.

Well I certainly hope you never aspire to leave that minimumn wage job of yours. The American dream notwithstanding.

Whats your point? If you mean that the American dream is only available to Pop bands that the music industry thinks are profitable then yeah, I think its BS. You can't honestly say that the industry is working the way it should.

I mean, look at some of these artists that are making millions, some don't even write their own songs, but since they look good and have a decent voice, they are promoted by the industry into the new Flavor of the Week.

That whole minimum wage bit? What point you were trying to make? Oh wait...you weren't trying to make a point.

  9. Re:Oh what a horrible future... on Music Industry's Future Foretold in China? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The point is, fuck Eminem, Brittany, and major label music in general. Expand your tastes and buy something you didn't hear about on the tv. Something local. Something original. I'm not saying that its ok to download tons of mp3's without paying for them. All I am saying is that the industry sucks the way it is run right now. They pick bands or people they feel will make the most money and help promote them as much as possible.

However, the best way for different, original music to be promoted is the use of music-sharing over the internet. I mean, new bands can't just produce a CD and if they can use the internet to promote their band they have a better chance of being noticed.

What I would like to see is a regulated form of internet file-sharing where people can easily find new bands and try out their music. I mean, I am more likely to buy a CD if I know what the rest of the CD is like.

  10. I agree... on Music Industry's Future Foretold in China? · · Score: 0

The music industry makes a killing in the U.S.

They support the artists that they think will be the most profitable and then overcharge for stuff like CD's (I mean, who actually believe the piece of plastic music is burned on is worth $13-15 a piece?).

Imagine a world where CD's only cost a few bucks and new artists were able to promote their music for free over music-sharing programs over the 'net.

  11. Oh what a horrible future... on Music Industry's Future Foretold in China? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Where CD's only cost a few bucks instead of $13-15.

If you really look at the article all you really get out of it is that some artists expect to make a few hit songs and be able to live in luxury for the rest of their years off the millions they supposedly make. Whenever I hear artists complain about how they are suffering from the effects of piracy, I just laugh. They are making lots of money doing something they supposedly love to do and they get made when they aren't making millions?

  13. Re:what about public libraries??? on Bookseller Purges Records to Avoid PATRIOT Act · · Score: 1

Yeah, but its a different animal when you are dealing with public libraries, I mean, you can't just anonymously borrow a library book, they have to know who you are and where they can reach you, else people would be borrowing books permanently.

For bookstores, however, its not really necessary for them to keep your information. What would they use it for besides some sort of mailing list?

  14. Godd for them... on Bookseller Purges Records to Avoid PATRIOT Act · · Score: 1

Really, what does the government gain by knowing what books each person has recently bought? I mean, if someone has purchased dozens of books about terrorism and bomb-making, I'm sure there would be more obvious and meaningful evidence of wat they plan to do than just what books they have.

I mean, some college kid does a paper on terrorism and in the process buys a few books on the subject, then all of a sudden this kid is getting a call about those books. I don't want to feel as though I might "get in trouble" if I buy or borrow a book on a questionable subject.

  15. Tech schools are the worst... on U of Wyoming Fingerprinting All P2P Traffic · · Score: 1

Its amazing that despite my house only having a low bandwidth DSL connection compared to the OC-3 I'm running on at school I still am able to download 10 times as many files just because of the availability of P2P services when I am at home.

I think that the whole copyright infringement thing needs a complete overhaul with taking the internet into account....I mean, I buy more CD's if I can download songs and listen to more of the CD before I buy it, but if I can't listen to songs I probably won't waste my money trying to pick good CD's randomly.

For instance, someone who has worked hard throughout their student life, got a master's degree in engineering is much more likely to get decent job than a high school drop out, but that doesn't mean either person is garaunteed a job or never getting one. I mean, it wouldn't be uncommon for that engineer to be stuck in dead-end jobs for years while the high school drop out makes a fortune.
