I suppose the thing that really surprises me is that in an article that is clearly a marketing press release, no really compelling reason to use these instead of Intel's products is offered.
Yeah, I definately got the same "marketing BS" feeling when reading the "article." Which like I said, makes it even more unattractive since you would think with such an article they could come up with better things to say than it just being comparable to Intel.
As for pricing, the PT880 Pro will be priced competitively with the current Intel 865 solutions on the market while the PT894 will be priced to compete with the current Intel 915 boards and the PT894 Pro competing with 915/925 boards.
The fact that they don't mention price until the end and in such a lackluster way it makes it tough for me to get excited about this. I really would like to see a less expensive alternative to Intel, not just "priced competitively".
Plus, the fact that the benchmarks don't show anything too exciting doesn't help either.
But competition is always a good thing, I just wish the only selling point didn't seem like "We aren't Intel".
I used to be all for ATI, but the current selection of cards from Nvidia is IMO more impressive, especially cards like the 6600GT which are pretty awesome in the $200 price range.
I just don't see the demand right now. You already have plenty of options. You can buy the DVDs, you can use a service like Netflix, or you can take a quick trip to the rental store to get what you want most of the time.
For music, your only option other than downloading is to go to the store and throw down the $10+ for the entire CD. The market was there for online music distribution, since you can save time and money by downloading online.
Until downloading movies saves you both time and money, and is easy to use, I don't see the service becoming too popular.
Considering how much I dislike hearing music on my laptop speaker, I doubt there are many people out there interested in downloading music instead of renting or buying.
Except portable music devices are a huge market, and CD burners are nearly ubiquitous in computers these days, plus you talking about the difference between a couple minutes and a few hours worth of downloading.
I am not saying this will never be a valid medium for movie distribution, but right now I just don't see the market being that large.
Considering how many people download movies off of bittorrent, I think there IS a market out there.
You say many people in relation to those who read Slashdot, I am talking about the public in general. Sure there may be a market, but I don't see it being that big until this would allow easy veiwing on a regular television set.
Considering how much I dislike watching movies on a monitor, I doubt there are many people out there interested in downloading movies instead of renting or buying.
Of course, the best thing would be to avoid situations like this in general, you would think people would pay more attention to what was going on when sending out C&D letters.
But, they did the right thing and fessed up to their mistake, something companies rarely do anymore. Way to go Nintendo.
When I first started playing, I was ticked-off that there were so many cut-scenes breaking the pace of my game play. I'm 3/4 through FFX now and I find myself getting ticked-off that the game play is interrupting my animated movie...
Haha, I had the same exact reaction. I got to a point a ways into the game where I just wished that the rest of the game was just one long cut scene. I felt like the cut scenes were the interesting parts, and the gameplay was just there to connect the cut scenes, rather than the other way around.
Until Joe Taxpayer accepts that money is not the solution to every social ill I doubt we will have a serious tax-payer funded space program. Which will be never by my calendar.
Maybe if people were a little more optimistic rather than just writing it off as a 'never gonna happen' there might actually be a chance.
I mean, who knows, maybe there are plenty of people who believe in space exploration but figure it won't happen because they figure no one else agrees with them.
People forget how much we need to support programs like this in order to advance mankind. I mean, look at all the innovation that came about during the times leading up to putting a man on the Moon. Its challenges like this that push the brightest minds of the world towards something other than who can build the best weapon.
Of course, thats assuming that no short-sighted leaders come about in the future that see space exploration as a waste of money. I for one am all for stuff like this. It brings out the best in us.
I honestly can't believe they are still pumping out new versions of the show, I like TNG episodes but after that they just get watered down, like even the writers are getting sick of comping up with new episodes.
Definately wait at least 3-4 years, spend some time getting a decent amoutn of quality episode ideas and then come back strong. I think they can really do a lot with the series if they weren't just going through the motions.
It NEVER hurts to have the best performance.
True, but the point I am trying to make is that between the two top-of-the-line cards...do you think you are really talking about a noticeable difference in performance? I'm not talking about +-5 fps in some benchmarks, I am talking about real-time game playing...
At the levels of performance that you are talking about with the ATI and NVidia cards, there really isn't a large difference between a few frames here and there. I mean, most of the time, the declared "winner" only bests the other card on a majority of the test, not all of them
Just pick whicher brand you like better and you'll feel better off letting go of that $500...
For those of us who require mouses (i.e. when I do design work), I highly reccomend the Quill [quillmouse.com]. It's a bit expensive, but 100x more comfortable and much better designed, especially from the wrist POV. Took me one week to get fully adjusted; now I'm just as accurate with it as I was with my IntelliMouseExplorer (I know that doesn't look possible, but it is; this mouse actually feels MORE natural).
I can completely how it would feel more natural, just holding me hand in the same position that it would be for the mouse feels a lot better on my wrist...
Too bad I'm too cheap to actually go out and buy one of those;)
These lawsuits have nothing to do with RIAA trying to control what we put on our mix CDs.
What about the whole idea behind the coating on CD's that was supposed to prevent people from burning them onto their computers? If it wasn't for felt tip pens, you probably wouldn't be able to make those mix CDs...

I dont use CDs anymore, CDs arent as portible as mp3s
Then all you have to do is take a couple minutes to rip the entire CD into whatever format you want onto your computer, while also having a hard copy in case you lose the hard drive.
Well no, because people dont want CDs.
You have to remember that you != the rest of the U.S. population...there are millions of people who still want CDs, I can guarantee you that.
Sure you do. It's the better console. I don't know anyone that has a PS2 with 5 or more games, and can honestly say that none of their games are available on any other console. If you bought a $200 console to play a specific $50 game, you just spent $250 on a single game. If I buy a $200 console, because it has more features than the others, I have made a wise choice, irregardless of what titles are currently availible. GTA Vice City is not worth $250, and we all know that eventually, all the best games will be available for the XBox.
Actually, I bought PS2 for GT3, GTA, GTA:VC, Final Fantasy X, Stuntman, Dynasty Warriors 3, Ratchet and Clank, Devil May Cry, etc...
All the best games for the XBox, huh? Well, I haven't seen all of these best games, yet. I don't need extra features on a console...I have a DVD Player, speakers, a few computers, why do I need features (besides ones that relate directly to gameplay experiences.)
Couple that with a unified one-time-fee online gaming service, and I'm sold, no matter how much I hate Microsoft. Not to mention the fact that while you have to keep shelling out money for new games, I can just download patches and new levels to the HARD DRIVE in my console.
There is no logic in that arguement...you still have to shell out money for new games as well...you just might get a few levels and patches along with it. I am not saying its bad that you can download patches, I am saying that patches != new games.
Did you know you can play games on your computer, too? Why'd you buy a console at all?
Thats just a dumbass question and you know it. I buy consoles for the games. How many times have you played Final Fantasy X on your PC? Oh wait...I forgot...you can't. Oh yeah, and I like controllers...
You've obviously never found fault in the background music in games, or heard any you really liked. In fact, they should just make them all silent, so we can listen to Howard Stern on FM while we play. Face it, the ability to listen to your own CDs integrated into the game you're playing is a useful feature. One that PS2 doesn't have. Oh, and I forgot, XBox can play audio CDs, and PS2 can't. Yikes.
Like I said, I have a computer, if I don't like the music on a Nintendo I can turn off the sound and play music through my 4.1s in my room...how's that for backwards compatibility? I am not saying that being able to listen to music during games is bad, but I usually play decent games with decent sound, and I like my music to go with the game, not just be the same music I always listen to.
How much have you spent on memory cards for your PS2?
I have payed $20 on memory cards for PS2. Sure having a hard drive is cool, much better than paying for Memory Cards...but I like being able to carry around my memory cards. Having a hard drive will never make me ignore a lacking library of games.
Sure, $1 may sound good, but if you want a whole album it could easily be over $10.
Sure people say that you don't have to download all the songs...only the good ones...
Well...see, I like certain bands that are more than one-hit-wonders...I want to here the whole CD, not just that one Made for radio to be popular song most bands have.
I already believe CD's are way over-priced as is...I won't settle for downloading songs at $1, I want it down to.50.
But this really isn't a problem for me since I don't own a Mac or an iPod;).
That's why I'm an independent. I get to wait for the BS to start flying before choosing which sides to believe ;)

Oh come on now, when was over-dramatization ever a problem just with FOX news? ;)

Guess somebody was a bit too quick on the "Threaten Lawsuit" button at the firm.

I really wish it would become a primary priority.

As expected, they are much faster than previous generation products from ATI
Thats basically like saying "Hey, this new souped Mustang is much faster than a 1992 Taurus!"
I mean, it better be whole hell of a lot faster than the old cards for the huge premium you are paying right now.
It NEVER hurts to have the best performance.
