"The FCC rules are clear," said Travis Larson, spokesman for the international Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association. "Jamming is illegal, but whether there is an exception made for law enforcement is a decision the FCC will have to make."
There should be an exception for common courtesy. Who hasn't wanted to shove that cell phone down that loud-talker's throat. All I'm trying to do is catch a bit of sleep on the train!
A handheld jammer would be just as effective and a bit less violent.
It seems to me that now might be a good time to start a revolution against the those who are in charge. Why not start it here in *cyberspace.* Make the Michigan law unenforceable. Overwhelm them by making as many copies of "illegal" technology and distribute them to as many locations as possible. Make it impossible for them to arrest everybody.
Maybe I'm on the wrong track. But there are a lot of smart people here. (?) I'm sure someone can find an effective way to fight back.
As I read the threads related to this topic, I see that the vast majority of slashdotters find the idea of the patriot act to be disturbing and an infringment on the rights we as Americans take for granted. This nation is a great as it is because people like us stand up for what is right. If we allow the Patriot Act to become policy without offering some sort of resistance, we undermine the effectiveness of a free democracy and run the risk of turning into a totalitarian society.
Isn't that what we are fighting against in Iraq?
Slashdot is one of the best forums out there to discuss your views and get them heard by a large audience. But we need to take it a step further. We need to let the people in charge know that we cannot stand for these blatant infringments on our rights of free speech, privacy, and free thought. Libraries and ISP's are only the beginning. We need to write letters (remember them?) and make phone calls to our representative officials. Trust me, they will listen. Take part in proactive measures. Support your local librarians.
Let's have the next headline read "Hacker's and Computer Geeks Take Up the Fight Against the Patriot Act!"
Is this for real? I thought a space elevator was just the work of science fiction. The logistics of such an endeavor are mind boggling. The dangers are also scary. What would happen if such an elevator were to *fall* out of orbit? How many times would it wrap itself around the planet? Two or three i think. (sorry don't have a calculator handy) Not to metion the energy such a fall would release.
I can't get to the site so I'm just plagarizing Kin Stanley Robinson's RED PLANET.
I am a professional musician and this issue has been weighing heavy on my conciousness. From a professional perspective, I would really like to get paid for my work. That doesn't happen when music files are copied and redistributed without compensation to the creater of the music. However, I am not a businessman. I am an artist. And one of the most important goals for an artist is to have his/her work seen or heard by as many people as possible. If I get paid... great. But that is secondary.
So in essense, I like to leave it up to the consumer to deal with the ethical reprocussions of file trading on an individual basis. If you like a work, I want you to distribute it so others can experience it. But keep in mind that the artist will need support to keep producing. If I create a work of art that is extremely popular and reaches a lot of people via file trading. Great. But if no one buys the record, I can't continue making such works in the future.
On the flip side, If I make a work of art that's crap. No one will want to pay for it, naturally. This puts pressure on me to create *better* art.
Good point. I didn't actually mean "God" in the religous sense, rather as a metaphor. Creating life that is different than your own is what I consider to be a godly act.
Oh man... I almost forgot i was an atheist.
never mind
Just like you Pro Lifer's to stick your noses where they don't belong. This discussion is about the ethical nature of technology... not the sociological issue of abortion.
I can see a strong ethical dilemma here. Putting aside the science fiction/horror aspect of AI, is it ethical to try to be "God"? If so, how would AI be treated from a Human Right's point of view? What could this future technology do, are there advantages? Disadvantages?
My favorite part of this movie (you know, besides the whole thing!) The Soundtrack was phenominal! Nothing like "Head Over Heals" and the Gary Jules version of "Mad World," both by Tears for Fears to really fuck with your head.
There's a really cool official Website for this movie. But forget where.
Because it sounds like they just figured out how to turn off a laser...
Bug poop.
DUDE
Fucking Quintana--that creep can roll, man--
WALTER
Yeah, but he's a fucking pervert, Dude.
DUDE
Huh?
WALTER
The man is a sex offender. With a record. Spent six months in Chino for exposing himself to an eight-year-old.
DUDE
Huh.
WALTER
When he moved down to Venice he had to go door-to-door to tell everyone he's a pederast.
DONNY
What's a pederast, Walter?
WALTER
Shut the fuck up, Donny.

I live in a 2nd floor apt. Why?
Ahh I passed the Test... Now to rid myself of those pesky humans!!
If I were to sue an organization, it most definitly would not be a law school. Can you imagine having hundreds of law students pissed off at you?

Lets get the UN to send in peacekeepers and liberate the US from an evil totalitarian regime.

I have to agree with just about everybody. Bad movie... Book was worse!
