It's not really the same at all. Television "addicts" usually have no problem balancing their time - few TV watchers would skip work, stay up until 4am, or watch for 12 hours straight.
You kind of missed the point. Television addicts probably would have trouble balancing their time because they are addicts. Few gamers would skip work (etc) either, but gaming addicts would. Addiction is defined by it's consequences.
Chinese and Hindi might reach a lot of people, but they'd all be clustered in one place. English can reach people in all the continents, not just one.
Huh? Are you saying there are no Chinese or Hindi speakers in North America? I am pretty sure there is at least one Chinese speaker on every continent!
For the last bloody time, terrorist are not entitled to due process
Amendment V
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
"Enemy combatants" are not in the service of a military right? So is the argument that terrorists are not people? Thats pretty fucking scary if so.
And do keep in mind that the Sony rootkit could in theory come in from a USB device like it does from a CD. I would go with iPod. Apple is not likely to make the same mistake that Sony did. Or I would hope not.
Sony has a major label and Apple has a major media store. It is in both of their interests to prevent you from using "unauthorized" content. Buy a player from a vendor without vested interests in copy "protection" to be safe.
The problem with things like social security, and welfare is that they remove incentive to work.
I sure fucking hope Social Security removes the incentive to work since the people collecting it are retired. I guess you would rather have everyone work until they are dead.
Jeez, all of you guys have a problem with shades of gray. It is neither 100% popularity nor 0% popularity. It is a cost/benefit ratio. According to your logic 0 banks would be robbed since they have better security. Yet banks get robbed. Why? Because there exists someone for whom the extra money outweighs the extra risk.
Eventually we will reach a point where the target size will be large enough that it provides enough bang/buck to defeat the extra security.
How about, seeing as we supposedly live in the "land of the free", we allow the owners of the property decide if they want to allow smoking. If there are so many non-smokers out there that want a smoke free environment then I would think non-smoking places would thrive.
...and Leonary(sic) Nimoy, f'rinstance, declaring that aliens are among us......
Hello. I'm Leonard Nimoy. The following tale of alien encounters is true. And by true, I mean false. It's all lies. But they're entertaining lies. And in the end, isn't that the real truth? The answer is: No.
It is an interesting point for sure, but competition in the OS market is a good thing regardless of how "free" it is. Sometimes you just have to be a pragmatist. I think this was a pretty clever move by Lispire, good job to the marketing dept.
It is very sad that someone wasted a mod point to mod this down as overrated. I realize that MS is not popular around here but he makes valid points, if you disagree then respond.
That is, if the EU's constituent nations agree to it.
Exactly. That is why this whole "debate" is stupid. If they really want to have control over a subset of DNS they just need to go ahead and do it. Of course, passing a business disrupting mandate like that would be a hard sell...
How would anybody feel about an Internet "Security Council" to oversee the 'net? As an American (a conservative Republican American, no less), wouldn't care too much if the current permanent members of the UN Security coucil formed an Internet Security and Oversight Council.
What a grand title for an organization whose sole power is deciding who to sell domain names to.
Yeah! It's not like materials deemed "offensive" could ever be banned from the "public" internet. You just watch the FCC start regulating cable and tell me that for-pay services are safe.
Indeed the rest of the world can set up their own DNS servers for a new TLD (say '.earth'), but they can't force anyone to contact the root server for that domain. The result will be chaos.
Honestly, if the EU (for example) decided to set up its own DNS servers with new tlds and mandate that ISPs there use their root servers ICANN would almost have to honor it. There is no way they would get away with just cutting off Europe. People would be pissed (because there is money there).
My favorite bit is that income tax is a state tax, yet he doesn't get to vote in that state because he doesn't live there. Sounds like taxation without representation to me.

Try passing out leaflets with DeCSS source code on them. That actually is illegal in the states.
...but I'm afraid if the control were moved out of the US, where freedom of speech is much more voraciously protected than other countries
Tell that to 2600 magazine!

In what ways can you tinker with Linux that you cannot tinker with OS X?
Using hardware that doesn't have a picture of an apple on it?

What does MS have a monopoly on? It's not 1996 any more!

Try having a student-led demonstration in the capitol of each country. (Anybody remember Tiananmen quare?)
Ah yes, the "but china is worse so that makes it ok" defense. Does anyone remember Kent State?

No matter which way you do this, you're merely switching mastersfrom the proprietary RealPlayer format to the patent-encumbered MP3 format.
How much time is left on those patents anyway?
Wikipedia says: MP3 is a popular digital audio encoding and lossy compression format invented and standardised in 1991...
So what, 2008?

you will buy overpriced, proprietary hardware if it says "DELL" on the front with that slanty "E"?
What hardware in a Dell is proprietary? Does Dell even build it's own hardware? The x86 platform is as open as you are going to get...
Remember kids, branding != proprietary. Proprietary means you can only get it from one source.
I know it sounds crazy but I heard there are these communists on the internet that give away operating systems for free! Can you believe it?
MS is making a strike at google's efforts by putting tighter restrictions on how they can use, and possibly distribute your information in the future.
Good!
Now all we need is for Google to lobby for national software quality control standards and we will be set!
Remember, the DMCA was signed by a Democrat president,
uh huh, and who wrote that bill again?
