If that's the case, why are only 5-10% Libertarian?
Because the way the political system is setup, 3rd parties have no realistic chance of gaining power, and even more important, a failed attempt ends up splitting the vote for the closest of the two 'proper' parties, resulting in a win for the worst preferred party. See Nader etc.
It is a strategic mistake to vote for the Libertarians, not until they have a realistic chance of getting 50% of the vote.
Besides, can anyone explain to me properly, what exactly is the difference between libertarianism and outright anarchy?
I was facinated by the exam and it wasn't going to affect my employment one way or the other as I had been guarenteed the job and this just meant more work for me the more clearance I received.
You should be careful of this, I've read of cases where people were told the same thing, but on failing the test (perhaps deliberately, trying to have fun) suddenly found that the `quatanteed job' didn't exist anymore.
Virtually nobody outside of the US uses it any more.
Virtually nobody outside the us ever did use it. Unfortunately though, its use outside the USA is slowly increasing, presumably due to lobbying from the USA and especially the American Polygraph Association.
Any technique that requires the examiner to lie him/herself as part of the procedure (as a polygraph test does, if the subject asks any nasty quesions), is rather suspect IMO. That it has no defensible scientific basis makes its use quite bizarre.
Well, there are twice as many Chinese speakers in the world than there are English. Why don't we all learn Chinese? I notice you use them, not including you. You are requiring everyone else to learn a second language in order to get an education, but you are not prepared to do that yourself?
But the main point: $100 million, to spend on teaching people a language. Suppose, as an order of magnitude guess, one person can teach 1000 people a fluent second language in one year. Suppose also you can get away with paying them $10,000 salary per year. With your $100 million, you can then teach 10 million people a second language. This is about 0.2% of the world's population. Not much to show for the $100 million.
Alternatively, pick 10 (or even 100) languages and spend the $100 million on translating the classic works of other languages. You can have an impact on virtually everyone on the planet.
Even in the 'first world', teaching everybody English is not the way education is done. There are millions of books available in German, Spanish, Italian,..... Believe me, I am a teaching assistant at a German university, for a start very few of the textbooks are direct translations, usually they are just written from scratch by naative speakers for a native audience. And in some cases, better than what is available in English.
But seriously, that is a pretty racist remark. English is a minority language in the world, and by no means has a monopoly on 'first world content'. But the bottom line is why spend vast amounts of money teaching people a language that has no relevance to them (apart from understanding said 'first world content'), when you could pay someone to translate it, more cheaply and end up with content that fits in with local cultural tradition.
Why not put root's home directory on the encrypted partion to begin with? IIUC the only reason root's home dir is not/home/root is that if you can't mount/home for some reason, root can still function. Security would override that.
Part of the backlash in Britain is because Blair initially tried to pretend that it was legal, even going so far as to basically fake official legal advice (fake in the sense that the usual people responsible for such things refused to do it - because it wasn't legal - but you can always pay some guy off the street for his opinion and use that instead!).
Whereas in the USA they didn't bother even trying to justify the legality, they simply don't care.
Why bother encrypting the whole disk anyway? My instinct (as a programmer, but knowing not much about security) would be to just encrypt/home,/tmp, maybe/etc and/var, and I guess/swap if I was really paranoid.
Get real. I copy the text of a book to the back of my retina, and then onto my optic nerve, whenever I read a book, too.
I have actually read Free Culture, by the way. I don't remember reading anything that paranoid in it. I've been meaning to read it again sometime though, so I might start tonight;-)
Good point. When does protesting against some institution/organization/state turn into racism against members of that state? An interesting comparison is the anti-Arab violence in the USA in the aftermath of September 11. There were isolated acts of violence against people who had no connection to the terrorism but just looked vaguely middle-eastern. Now as far as I know there was not this kind of racism in the USA prior to 2001, so presumably it can be attributed purely to a somewhat mindless reaction to al-Qaida. Also, presumably if the 'war on terror' is resolved soon such reactions will stop. But at what point do these kinds of actions turn into full-blown racism that would outlive even the original cause?
That is, if the conflicts with Israel were resolved peacefully (or even non-peacefully!), would the violence towards Jews stop too? That would be the real test of how deep or shallow the racism is. In any event, it is shameful to extract revenge on people who are only connected to something you don't like by an accident of birth. Sadly it seems to be part of the human condition. Perhaps it is something that could be overcome, after all historically the situation has been much worse. It seems to come down to fear of the unknown, believing 'that person comes from country X therefore they are bad' without actually personally knowing anyone from that country. To that extent, in 1000 years or so when the human population is intermixed to the point that racial divisions are no longer pecievable, the problem might solve itself?
Sigh, I guess religion would still be enough of an excuse to commit violence though.
France has in recent years had massive "down with the Jews" rallies
Really? Can you back up that claim? There have been quite a few anti-semitic acts of violence in France, and nearly all of the perpetrators were Muslims. But nothing on a large scale. The main problem in France is rising discontent in the relatively large Muslim migrant population, and the Jews have been victims of this along with everyone else. The recent large protests were mainly about unemployment and institutionalized racism. To the extent that anti-semitism was mixed in, it was more about anti-Israel than against French Jews.
Was that a serious attempt at dialog, or are you just trolling? Not all the world is the same, and most people actually appreciate that fact. It makes going on holiday so much more fun.
Where did I suggest I wanted to force my opinions down your throat? In fact, I don't think that at all. The purpose of my comment was merely to emphasize that, on a global scale, CNN is well right of center. By itself, that doesn't even mean much. Why try and put words into my mouth?
Yeah true. Even the international edition of CNN (the only one I've ever seen for more than a few minutes at a time) is waaaaaay to the right of what I consider 'normal'. And rumor has it, that the international edition is to the left of the USA edition! WTF?!

The phrase "no children to speak of" implies that you do have children, but, for whatever reason, they are not worth speaking of. Also connotations of unspeakable; perhaps guilt of some crime not permitted to speak of in polite conversation.
Surely this was written by mistake; either you don't have children, or it is about the worst insult you could give them.
Um... okay, so how do you make the end users turn their machines in to Sun instead of putting them at the bottom of their trash bag?
Pretty simple. You get a cash deposit back when you turn the machine in. If you don't turn it in, the cash goes towards cleaning up whatever place you dumped the toxic waste.
Fine. But, the only way to naje this work would be to require people to be responsible for their own property. If you don't take your old computer to a proper waste recycling center (and pay the fee for them to take it off your hands), you go to jail.
Surely you would have no objection to this, after all you are responsible, right?

This is just my biased opinion as a divorcee with no children to speak of.
No children to speak of? You do realize what this phrase means, right?

Yay for cultural imperialism!

Well, that is easy enough to do on any modern unix (OS X included). But it isn't enough.

What does encrypting the whole disk give you?
Often. Don't project the faults of your own country onto others.
Have you got a reference in Lessig's book?
I have actually read Free Culture, by the way. I don't remember reading anything that paranoid in it. I've been meaning to read it again sometime though, so I might start tonight ;-)
What theory says otherwise? I've never heard that before. If so, why wouldn't you need permission from the author to read a book too?
Well, as a user who does not re-distribute or modify the software, the GPL simply doesn't apply to you. So yes, you can just ignore it.

You heard it from the man himself. You don't need a better source.
Yeah, why not? In the same vein that cigarette tax goes to fund the health budget, the bible tax could fund the military budget.
Are you confusing Palestine with Iran?
