I don't think that the designers of the console should be entitle to anything.

The spreadsheet that is made to determine whether or not a project goes forward considers many things: both the upfront revenue and future revenue. All of this, minus costs, get calculated into a NET PRESENT VALUE.

If the net present value, minus the liscence fee that you don't think should exist, was not sufficient, the company would either not produce as good a console or not produce the console at all.

It doesn't MATTER if a company makes money on the console sale itself or makes it on the console + three games.

However, your scenario was interesting and there are a few conflicts there in that such a person can't really exist. Being a Randian Objectivist is sort of like being a Catholic in that there are people who 'own' that line of thinking, so you can't really disagee with them about what it means to be a Catholic/Objectivist like you can argue about what it means to be an idiot, I mean a liberal (US).

Anyway, the Randian Objectivists are fiercely pro-war. Off the charts. If they had their way the US would invade Brazil right now for nationalizing US property (and so would the US if this was 100 years ago. The USMC did this about 130 times around that period).

Also, while they are typically considered 'pro-choice', Rand did not support it beyond the first trimester and could well have changed her position based on where science is today as viability marches back to conception.

Starcraft's battle.net had a place where you could play player moded games. There were some HUGELY fun modifications made. Once you downloaded someone's mod, you could mod it, too. So you would often see an original work marked 1.0 and then someone else would do a 1.1 or whatever and they would keep getting better, bug fixes, etc.

If the tools are there and it's a fun environment, I think you could find enough people making a few cool maps that would make it worthwhile. Not ALL will be great, but many may be good.

It's also a sort of anti-industrial mindset that I find disturbing. Someone makes a product that can make someone else's life better. They tell other people about it. And you turn that into some nefarious evil conspiracy.

Adding to the list...You have probably also bought a newspaper at some point. You probably own a car. In the US there are advertisements on the gas pumps - I'm guessing the same for Canada. Something about the Zone. Maybe you can explain.

There was a time when there were a lot of premium games on the Zone where you had to buy the PC game and the zone would be the matchmaking area. Age of Empires, Birth of the Federation, and other PC games like that. I even remember some of MS's subscription titles like Allegiance and Asheron's Call launched through the zone.

I just checked the site out, and it's entirely these casual games. When did this change happen? I missed the old zone from a nostalgic point of view. Just looking for someone to play Birth of the Federation with.... I suppose games these days come with their own networking software/matchmaking or use gamespy.
