    Your right. Ubuntu isnt getting any slower. Its always been about as slow as it can be.

    I disagree. Newer kernels have improved for me while indeed adding more to them. It really does depend on how you tune them. It IS the distro however. KDE has been getting faster over time, and the choice of using Gnome over KDE does have an impact.
    Examples?
    My current distro is DVD based (and Debian based), so its a larger install, yet FASTER then ubuntu by a factor of 2 to 1 in install speed.
    Launch time is MUCH faster to the login, and log in to a fully running KDE is about 2 to 1.
    Packages load quicker, windows management is snappier, etc. Even the GLX_Gears at the same resolution is faster.

    No, Ubuntu is still slow. I really dont get why more people dont see that. Gnome is bad enough, but Ubuntu throws in a little extra slowness.
    Even install is slow: This computer is a 7 minutes install on a nice Debian based distro. Ubuntu: 15 minutes. WTF? Loading: Half the time of ubuntu.

    Games, ok. Itunes? Really? Yuck. Do yourself a favor and get Amarok. winRAR? Most distros have RAR, and PAR2 (yes both in GUI if thats what you want) since I get the feeling thats what you do with it......

    Thats the bottom line. You want your own IM server. Use that as a filter before you even get started looking.

    As i said before this post, move on to a distro that takes KDE seriously. Debian, Sidux, Mepis, etc. You will be much happier then messing around with the ugly red haired step child that is Kubuntu.

    I would go with a distro that stands behind KDE. kubuntu is never taken seriously, and just like Ubuntu is fragile, only worse. How about Debian pure, or Sidux for easy migration along with Sid? Sure is a whole lot faster, and Debian is still updating KDE3 with KDE4 as an option (or mix).

    Here Here. Ubuntu quickly automates itself to breakage. I am always wondering what surprise is awaiting around the corner, with an odd "I havent seen that before" moment.

    Ill give you a suggestion. Skip Ubuntu and try something else, Mepis, Sidux, Pure Debian, etc. Ubuntu has always been the slow, works sorta today may or may not work tomorrow distro for me.

    Except that other distros arent as noticeably slow, even compiled for one size fits all. And when people try the new kid (Ubuntu) and it feels slow (Gnome? ok not that flame war), they might not come back.

    Maybe to get more hits, but one of my biggest complaints with Ubuntu next to how fragile it is, has been how slow it is. Every time I try it I am disappointed and its getting worse. Debian has been very good to me, along with KDE.

    Then why is it I have the same functionality, although through a more powerful desktop environment KDE, and use basically the same packages, except its Debian, and my favorite distro installed, loads, and runs faster?

    I would forget Ubuntu if you like KDE. I would go with Sidux. Its a faster install, and a faster platform as well. You will be getting Debian Sid, but using the SMXI script to do the updates (as often as you want to), its been fairly painless, and is fun to get new stuff daily.

    I am only using MS Office 2003, I havent been using 2007. That said OpenOffice is still superior in integration between calc and writer, handles large documents better, and is easier to work with formatting. I believe most word processors are akin to food processors, and there is a better tool....but between these two, as someone who writes 300-500 page documents, I would rather use OpenOffice.

    As in taken from you, or taken from your luggage? And by the way, my SL5600 for some reason was really easy to type (figuratively) on, I got pretty fast at it.

    DS9 was the soaps.

    Glad someone said it. I grew up on TOS, reenacting it in the games we played as kids.
    Although I could enjoy TNG after I warmed up to it, I always called DS9 Deep Sleep 9. I have always thought of it as a soap opera. I know others who disagree, but everytime I saw it I began to look at my watch and wondered why I wasnt doing anything better with my time.

    Roads? Education? If people want education for their kids, they can buy it.

    On a interesting note, the government being involved in education does come at a societal cost, where students are rarely exposed to trades and real life experience. Gone are the days when one learned common knowledge and real world experience in their youth.

    The thing about roads is, though I don't think that the government should run roads or education, if we stopped maintaining either tomorrow, something bad would happen.

    And some would argue that without health care people aren't going to care much about education or roads, and something bad would happen.

    Just out of curiosity why does the government have to maintain roads? Are you suggesting that transporting goods is a fundemental need in the commons? And if so, does that mean that transportation of the new types of goods, such as "information" in digital form should also be handled by the government? Well then roll out the broadband for all!

    I use a filter on the browser plugin that automatically blanks the page and blacklists the site until I can review it. So if I host the email account which I do, or if I allow a gmail account with another extension that hides all ads, removes and/or auto deletes spam, hides the invite box, and disables chat, I feel pretty confident that if something distasteful gets in they aren't going to see it. There have been a few webpages that got blocked for funny reasons though... one had text that read "over 18 different challenges". No phrase "over 18" allowed! I do prefer to educate my children as best I can about why we are filtering, and what we are filtering for (for the most part and as age appropriate) this has been a neat way to explain how computers work, and why they can do repetitive tasks so well, and why they sometimes fail at them.
