Whats Okular missing? Is it anything that PDFedit adds? I like Okular, it added the one missing thing: rotation. It also added some nice markup and other neat little features.
KDE's Okular does forms. Get it. Its very Nice! And if you want to make that form obey your commands use pdfedit. Apt-get install okular pdfedit man i like linux!
I have been recommending Smplayer. Its very nice, has a lot of features, including subtitile, speed settings, skip ahead 10seconds, 20 or a full minute, and plays audio. It has a nice skin and is a front end to Mplayer. On Ubuntu you need to set the output rendering manually once, and then you may need to disable the compiz effects. Why cant they get that right out of the box on Ubuntu if its in thier repositories? Ubuntu is a strange thing, popular and friendly in some ways, and a pain in others. I always have problems with it and dont like the software packages that much either. I personally use Sidux, lots faster, just works, and is true Debian. Not a fragile mess that is ubuntu, but a little more on the geek side though.
Well I guess they will accomplish teaching children that they need to defrag their file system, how to run antivirus software, and try and figure out if the software they want is malware or not, how to to read (and ignore) Eula's, where the cracks are to the software they cant afford, and how to deal with a system registry. You know, common computer stuff like that.
But there is a mechanism that will keep you using their system calls, development environment, and ultimitly thier software. (Visual studio,.NET, silverlight, etc.) Face it, any windows software keeps you using windows.
We all probably started out on a closed source operating system... Why can't they?
NO NO NO. The point of free software was driven by people who previously had access to code and then had it closed. It was during the locking up of software that the open source movement was born. Therefore what you should be saying is we had to suffer through the closed source years, why should they?
Maybe thats why, after all the whining and complaining, that Debian has a point of providing security updates to older versions, even if they had to change the name to Iceweasel.
I dont have any problem with flash, its a little slow initializing in Konqueror, but that must be due to the nsplugin loading. Also works fine in Iceweasel 3. I dont experience crashing, I didnt even know that was a problem.
However, the biggest complaint I here from the Linux users I talk to is performance, full screen isnt so good. OpenGL acceleration would be nice.
I dont like flash either, but it works.
ROFLMAO : If i want debian that ISNT as cutting edge?
With the super fast release cycles of debian stable whizzing out of the gate so fast I too say : Slow Down, lets not get carried away!
I have been watching developers use native.NET on Windows realizing how bad windows.forms sucks for them, and you want to tell me I want that on my Linux box? Knock X all you like, but your full of crap or dont get it, x is much, much more useful and powerful as is, and I dont want to see it get modified to accommodate MS windows like behavior.
Much as I like UrT, and I run it natively under Linux, I also play CS using wine (well I got steam going and then used it to download CS and then launch it). I wouldn't say one is better then the other, they are just different.
ROFL: I realized that I could save that $1000 and cut my support time in half, by NOT using windows. And I got to see whats REALLY going on. You could too. A test environment isnt going to set you back much (if at all) and you will find that windows forces more patches (and reboots!) then you will ever see using Linux. (I said forces. You can cut back updates to security by wisely choosing the applications you need on a server, such as removing x for example).
Ever see the live cd accelerated knoppix disk? It was pretty amazing to watch, so fast. But you could do the same, you optimize to reduce seek, use only the very basic packages you need, and put it on a always mounted flash disk file system.
But the best tool for the job is often not chosen on the merits of the software, but rather the popularity. The more we allow closed source into our desktops, the more users that software gains, by choice or default, with a if it aint broke dont fix it, and then when your computer behaves poorly, or your security is at risk you blame the OS.
The question wasn't about getting exploited, its possible. The point was that the questions go away, because security is handled without strange nagging third party applications. There is ONE update location, one place to bring the system up to date, and usually it doesnt break things. 'multiverse'? You think I would recommend a 'buntu? No way. Additionally, most people i set these up for dont use torrents, and if they do, I recommend Ktorrent, written in C++ and Kde C++ libraries.
Jeez: perchlorate causes thyroid problems.... Well don't eat the firework and don't inhale the gases.
Well we dont eat the fireworks, but there is no excaping the gases in my town. Its literally like a dense fog all over the city, possibly county, tonight. Amazing really, but there is no avoiding the smoke unless you stay inside, but then guess what? You cant see them.
Once again: Why stop at dealing with AVG? Get rid of the whole mess. Every time I move some one from Windows to Linux the "what shall I do about spyware/adware/printer/windowsupdate" questions just go away. I used to recommend AVG about 4 years ago. Since then, I just recommend an OS without a need for antivirus software.
Slashdot has ads?

Faster bootup? Like http://helllabs.org/finit/

Adobe? Try Okular Its updates dont do that to me.

Never see that with my install. apt-get install iceweasel. Isnt that how you do it?
Olympic Medals were given out for shooting. Does that count as a sport? I always was stumped by this one.

Check his watch and look terribly bored? Oh yeah, talk about editing. But I did sigh, as a leader should at least feign interest.

Not a chance. If we are talking word processors I would take OO over Word or Office any day. I had both, I choose OO and still do.

Yeah i worded that badly. I meant you are optimizing seek BY putting it on a flash disk. Oh and BTW it really is fun to watch: http://www.alpha.co.jp/biz/rdg/ac-knoppix/index_en.html
