Forget installing antivirus, a new scanner, or a new printer on an old version of Windows. Asking for installers to be universal is like asking for software built for Windows to install on Linux. Why don't application installers for Windows work consistently with WinXP, Win2003, WinVista, and WinCE? Oh yeah, because they are different operating systems.

That means that all the major electronic retailers, except WalMart can match prices on Emachine computers. The different model number on WalMart computers ensures that no one can beat their price. It seems the only one really playing the model number game is WalMart because they have a lot more leverage than any other retailer.

For computers that could mean cheap capacitors, cheap memory, and cheap power supplies, and that is just a recipe for disaster. Linux supports more hardware out of the box than any other operating system, including Windows, especially Vista. You have a better chance getting everything to work on a current Linux distribution than you do with Vista. If you want to talk about XP, it has its own driver issues. Try installing XP on a computer with a SATA HDD. You better have a floppy drive available, even on SP2 which came out when SATA hard drives were already pretty common, not to mention that SP2 broke some drivers. That doesn't happen with Linux because almost all the drivers are included in the kernel.
America is a lot different than any European country when it comes to breaking the law. First of all we incarcerate a higher percentage of our population than any other country in the world. America is the only country other than Nigeria to execute minors. Also if you're a felon you cannot vote ever again. The American justice system doesn't believe in innocence or rehabilitation.
And as far as I'm concerned.. anyone that gets a ton of spyware on their pc, let alone viruses... would be too stupid to browse the internet for linux drivers or install them for that matter.
You're obviously a Windows user with little Linux experience if any. If you were even a tad bit experienced you would know that you don't have to track down Linux drivers on the internet. That's a common task for Windows users but Linux drivers are built into the kernel and the ones that aren't are available through the distribution's package manager.
I code all day using Dreamweaver on a Windows XP machine (this is what was installed on my workstation before I started my job) and I basically only check my code in Firefox. I have yet to code something that didn't work properly in Internet Explorer or Safari.
How would you know that you have yet to code something that didn't work in IE if you never check it? My guess is that something is broken. I've coded many websites and I can say that IE has been a bitch just about every time. Spacing is off, or a tag I used isn't displayed the same way, or isn't supported at all. Lack of PNG transparency support in every version of IE besides IE7 is a real pain in the ass too. PNG transparency can allow you to do some really cool effects that requires additional coding with IE if you want to make it display properly.
Simple sites rarely have problems rendering anymore because there isn't much to html4 but anything even remotely complex requires at least compatibility in the back of your mind at all times and at most it requires constant debugging. I can say though that I can code a website using Firefox, test it in IE, and it usually works without a hitch in any other browser. The joy of standards compliance...and lack thereof.

The problem is that then the very same party that called out the corruption then becomes corrupt themselves. It seems the old adage, "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" is still as true as it ever was. The only difference between communism and our current system is that we have two corrupt parties to choose from instead of just one.

Sure there's some people that aren't idiots, but there's no process in place to make sure that the sales people aren't idiots. I applied to futureshop once. 70% of the questions were trying to figure out if you would steal from there. The was no questions on technical knowledge, not even in the interview. It wasn't designed to tell who was qualified and who wasn't.
If big box stores only hired people qualified and knowledgeable about the products then they wouldn't have enough employees to run their stores, at least not at their pay rates. My point was that not everyone is an idiot that works at those places. It's a generalization that does not apply to everyone, although every store has their fair share of idiots. That's just the nature of retail, no matter what they are selling.
