I also call bullshit, especially on a home built computer. What kind of magical system do you own? Maybe you just aren't smart enough to realize that half your shit doesn't work. I can count the number of times I haven't had to install a third party driver from an OEM install on one hand because that number is exactly 0. I'd wager that in the past 6 months I've installed XP OEM on probably 100 computers.
I think it is different now though. Linux has thousands of applications and a lot of them are free. I think the biggest draw for me is that I have access to so many free programs. I can actually do what I want on a computer without either spending a fortune or cracking software. I couldn't possibley afford to do everything I can on Linux with a windows machine. Just the programming tools alone are worth it, nevermind the free burning tools, the free finance manager, the free layout program, or the free wepage editor. I really do think that lethargy is the reason a lot of people don't switch. Linux would suit a lot of home users out there, especially the ones who just type documents and go on the web. It doesn't take much to do that. The only way applications can possibly play into this at all is people that REQUIRE the use of a specific program. There are people who say they prefer photoshop but never do more than crop pictures with it. That my friend is lethargy.
I take issue with that. Linux is very capitalistic. There is a high degree of competition and the prices are low. Right now it is breeding innovation on the desktop with things like XGL and AIGLX. They will compete at competitive prices ($0) and the best option will win out in the end. Isn't that real capitalism?
If that happens with something GPL licensed then they can no longer rely on the community to submit patches and make improvements. With the BSD license Apple can keep leaching off the community. The GPL is a two way street. With the BSD license, big corporations still have all the power.
She's already got the ultra-left Howard Dean running the DNC, so compared to him, even she seems moderate
I think it's funny that you say that like Clinton is anything but moderate. She certainly isn't liberal and neither was her husband and you won't find many liberals who claim that either. It is only conservatives who like paint the Clintons as a liberal two-headed monster. In fact Dean is also about as moderate as they get. Everyone only talks about his stance against the war, but there is more to Dean than that. It's just easier to demonize your opponent by calling them extreme than it is to actually argue an actual point.
This is exaclty why I prefer the GPL license. People who create GPL software cannot just one day stop giving source code back to the community. Those who have relied on this source code are now screwed. It just goes to show that BSD licensed software is not dependable in this respect. You can always count on GPL source code and if you don't get it you have legal recourse.
Screen is all well and good, but I think you're using it backwards. Running a shell on a remote host is where screen shines because if you lose your connection, have to shift machines, or simply want to monitor a long file transfer's progress remotely, detatching and re-attaching is ideal.
You are misunderstanding his post. He starts a terminal without screen so he can login to a remote host and then start screen on the remote host. If you start it on the local host it is much less useful. I do the same thing. I have screen automatically start up with my aterms, but if I want to login to a remote host I use an xterm without screen. That way I can login, start screen, do what I want on the remote host, detach the screen, logout, and come back later to reattach the screen to view the output.
Don't worry about it so much. You said it yourself:
So, as long as you...don't mind running Mac OS X in a state that is completely unsupported, with a different kernel (!), modified in unknown ways, and in a state that won't be able to be updated with any OS or security updates from Apple (until they themselves are cracked), perpetually repeating this scenario ad nauseum...
No one but geeks are going to even attempt to do that and even then who would want to use such a beast as their main desktop? Apple won't lose any customers they don't already have. I don't know many current apple users that would even have a clue how to do any of the required steps to install OSX on unsupported hardware.
That's a dumb statement. Research does not have to be profit motivated. A lot of research comes from universities which in turn receive funding from the government. I believe this model is better suited to pharmacuetical research than corporations trying to maximize profits.
SBC had a deal going on for a while for 14.95 a month for 1.5 Mbps. You could get 3.0 Mbps for 24.95. They usually offer the deal to you again if you sign up for another contract. Once in a while you can get cable for 19.99 for 6 months and 42.99 after that. I'm surprised some people pay so much more than that for shitty service. Right now I am paying 24.95 for 1.5 (regular price) DSL and I never have slowdowns or downtime. I feel spoiled.
I'd rather save lives and be poor than let people die becoming rich.
An AC with a soul!? That's rare. I'd have to agree though. Personally I think anyone who would rather get rich from creating an AIDS cure than actually curing as many people possible is morally depraved. The biggest problem with capitalism is that it raises the value of wealth beyond that of humanity. In the end that isn't very good for humanity as a whole, it's only good for a tiny minority.
2D quality on Matrox cards is outstanding. How come we couldn't get a comparison with on of their cards. I have a Parhelia laying around here somewhere but unfortunately it's not quite working anymore (the screen is a nice shade of pink).
Maybe now some people will realize how bad software patents are. The majority of computer users don't care when Linux is prohibited from doing something because of patents but hopefully the fact that this will affect more users of proprietary software, people will start to take notice.
Business owners have never exploited employees, I believe it is vice versa. Wal*Mart succeeded by bringing less expensive goods to the consumer, but the consumer had to give up the information and service they used to receive from brick and mortar stores. The consumer made the decision to lower wages and incomes in their own area, Wal*Mart just met their desire for less expensive goods and lower overhead.
Can you explain to me how a walmart employee making minimum wage, is exploiting walmart? Have you ever worked at a retail store like that? There definitely is a lot of exploitation going on there but it's definitely top down.
I don't really see how this is possible considering I have two NF7-S boards (which use the same controller as the AN7) and XP had to use a floppy to install the drivers during installation. Maybe you have a magic copy of WindowsXP?
This is possible but only because some motherboards have the option to emulate IDE, since first generation SATA drives are exactly the same as IDE drives except with different connectors. I've done this before but don't try to switch it back to native SATA or you will have to reinstall Windows. XP, even with SP2 does not have native support for ANY SATA controllers.
A lot of it isn't even true anymore. It was a great read 15 years ago but today it is an ancient relic.
Those of us who do not place faith in Christian myths aren't really worried about the end times. We're worried about the government.
Environmental Armageddon
This is true but you can turn this "feature" off.

Track them to what? MAC addresses? They can easily be faked.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately the extension is buggy as hell. I guess I should report the numberous bugs in hopes of getting them fixed.
You have to love the wonderful world of propietary software.
The thumbnail of each page is something that AOL explorer does. It's kinda cool. Maybe someone will make a firefox extension that does the same thing.

We'll all get on that as soon as you provide some actual evidence. Thanks.
