Antivir is great. Put it on a bootable PE disk and wipe out those nasty viruses that are running in memory on a normal startup. It's probably one of the best free ones in my opinion. If you don't mind paying for software I would recommend NOD32. Very light, very fast scanner, and it detects and removes many more viruses than most.
So what inconsistencies are you talking about? He wasn't sure what rural country road he was on. How is that an inconsistency? It looks like the fundamentalists and conserveratives are coming out of the woodwork again to discredit by any means possible.
I think that the reason that you'll find many engineers and scientists resisting a pure evolutionary program in schools is that evolution, in its current form, is as much a religion as anything based on the Bible
That's bunk. Evolution is one of the most sound and accepted theories in all of science.
Any scientist with his/her salt will tell you that you don't publish results until all the tests are done. Until you have incontrovertable proof of evolution from start to finish, you have to allow for alternate theories, even if you personally believe them to be unreliable.
That's utter garbage. ID doesn't even qualify as a theory, more like a fantasy. In fact the only real theory in this discussion is evolution. As I said before it is one of the most sound theories in science. Any scientist worth his salt knows this.
I'd hate to think that science that can be proven will be rejected because of so much pollution by pseudo-scientists.
...to make the judgement that the government is becoming more secretive. The article states that in each of the three years prior the Pentagon has blocked 4, 5, and 9 patents submitted by the NSA. Three years of evidence is hardly enough to go by. There may be a perfectly good reason as to why more patents were blocked this year. With such a small number of patents denied it is possible that the NSA applied for more patents and the percentage of patents blocked is actually less than previous years. It is also possible that The NSA developed more inventions this year that could be deemed sensitive information. I would like to know how many patents submitted by the NSA have been blocked by the pentagon in the past 50-60 years and what percentage of patent applications have been blocked each year. That information would be much more useful. Move on, nothing to see here.
It's different with music, because it's pretty much the same quality, whether it's coming from your $2,000.00 home PC, or from your $200.00 iPod.
I can hardly beleive the quality is even close to the same. I archive all my music as flac and play them through a very nice set of speakers. I can gaurantee that it sounds much better than a shitty compressed file playing thorugh crappy little earphones. In fact I haven't encountered very many mp3 players that sound anywhere near as good as my minidisc player when I'm on the go. The only thing better would be listening to flac on minidisc (with native linux support of course). Sure, you can't hold nearly as many songs on one disc but if you're an audiophile you can tell the difference.
I'm sure it's all quite simple for the experienced Linux jockeys, but don't expect J6P to be able to jump through all those hoops and command-line gyrations just to get a program to install.
What the hell are you smoking? How hard is "emerge foo" or "apt-get install foo"? Don't have the libraries you need? Don't worry the package manager will install them automatically for you. It doesn't get much easier than that. It's hard to imagine how anyone would prefer the mess that is windows package management. A monkey could install software on Linux.
But it may go a ways to debunking the theory that pot destroys your memory and kills your brain.
That theory has been debunked a long time ago. It's just popular myth that pot destroys brain cells. You'll hear all kinds of propoganda from anti-drug groups. What people don't understand (other than scientists who actually study marijuana) is that marijuana is very different from other drugs. In fact some scientists hesitate to call it a drug. Marijuana does not have a direct affect on dopamine levels like most other drugs do (cocaine, heroin, etc). Your brain was built to accept cannibanoids and it has been shown in studies that cannibanoids can have beneficial effects on different parts of the body. Unfortunately the drug is so stigmatised (especially in the US) that it is very difficult to study and when a study like this is revealed it is usually buried in the news and buried by anti-drug propoganda. I wish the government would just let scientists honestly evaluate the pros and cons of marijuana as medicine and even marijuana as a recreational "drug". The last time the governement funded a major study of marijuana (under Nixon) they didn't like the results that it produced so they just lied and covered it up. You have to wonder why.
Based on the moderation that followed, I would say that "some people" don't like it when popular theories get questioned. Which just goes to show you--once a scientific "fact" has been established, our attachment to it becomes as dogmatic as any theological notion...
This has been the general way of science from the beginning. Have solace in the fact that eventually the truth will win out, but just like anything else it takes time to change people's opinions. There haven't been any scientific paradigm shifts that happened over night.
That's a little vague. Not all copyright infringement is considered "criminal infringement of copyright". In fact most filesharers do not fall into this category. Bootleggers usually fall into this category but I don't think there is a real good explanation of what constitutes criminal infringement of copyright.
Money is power, and in the corporate world profitability rules. If Sony Music want DRM, Sony Electronics will supply it.
This is why I believe that Sony should split into two different companies. It would be beneficial to the entertainment side of Sony because they would increase their overall profit margins. It would be beneficial to the hardware side of Sony because they already produce great technology, but the DRM and propietary nature of Sony hardware is a very big deterrent.
For exeample, I have a NetMD recorder that is useless with my Linux computer, whereas most mp3 players act as mass storage devices when connected to a computer and can be used with any operating system. It kills me because minidisc players sound better, record better, and are much more durable than any mp3 player I have ever used but because of its propietary nature and lack of a linux client it's practically useless to me. If Sony played their cards right they could have owned the portable music player market early on but instead they are stuck with the fact that people like me feel burned and are now looking elsewhere to buy electronics.
So, here's the deal. Liberals can pick and choose which portions of the old law they want to apply.
Are you on crack? Liberals are not trying to implement biblical law. Perhaps some of the laws overlap with biblical laws but they are not being implemented for religious reasons. Calling liberals atheists doesn't help your point much either. I'm both liberal and definitely NOT an atheist. To be honest I'm not sure what point you were trying to make because your post is essentially incoherent.
if it were the private market, for one, there would be no new orleans because it would be STUPID to build a city under sea level. it would do this because of the PROFIT motive, for no other reason.
educate yourself before you make a stupid post.
You are the one who needs an education. New Orleans is where it is exactly because of business. You can't get much more important to business than being right on the Gulf and connected to the Mississippi.
PC is when you have to refer to Oriental people as Asians because some oversensitive ex-hippie professor at Swarthmore (who's white) finds it offensive.
Now that IS offensive. It's funny that after this whole discussion you cannot realize why that is offensive.
PC is more about the heightened sensitivities of academics, not the people they are referring to
That's your own definition and I have no idea where it came from.
You're totally off on this. Public places (and/. is pretty public) should induce a bit different behavior in you than when you're around a small group. I'd be the first guy to make Hiroshima jokes among my friends (we'd probably get along pretty good outside/.) but I wouldn't try one when speaking in public. You were speaking in public.
So when you're with a group of friends in the city do you look over your shoulder everytime you say something that MIGHT be offensive? This is slashdot. I may not know everyone but I know my company. Of course I'm going to get some oversenstive people like you bitching but like I said I don't really care.
Yeah, I think the unspecified period is when there aren't people around who experienced the event. For example, you would be insensitive to joke about 9/11, since there are probably people here who lost friend and relatives. Seriously, you know well enough not to joke about 9/11 (nobody does here) yet you call me a prude for suggesting similar logic dictates not joking about Hiroshima. They aren't equivalent, but the same tangent of logic applies.
You see 9/11 jokes are ok by me too. I have a sense of humor but I'm not going to joke about the subject with survivors just as I haven't in this whole fucking thread.
For the last time, *I* wasn't offended. I was annoyed by your flippant response to people who suggested that if was rude to make such a joke. If I was offended by anything, it was your BS, not your joke.
If you weren't offended why the hell are you complaining so much? You are the one frothing out the mouth and spewing the BS.
And 'the fact is' you have NO idea who's reading/. or who would be legitimately offended. Laughter is great, but if you can't be funny without joking about modern holocausts, then you've got a rather deficient sence of humor.
Modern holocausts? You act like holocaust survivors and hiroshima survivors hang out on slashdot. If you have a clue at all you will notice that NO survivors of either tragedy have complained. In fact you are the only one who has which just proves to me that you are a hypersensitive, politically correct whiner.
Not making jokes about Hiroshima is just about not being a complete insensitive asshole.
That's your opinion and to be perfectly honest I don't give a fuck what you think about me.
You have to judge your civility by the feelings of others, not yourself, otherwise it's kind of pointless.
Isn't that what PC is? If I worried about what everyone else thought then I would never say a god damn thing, and no one else would either. I realized a long time ago that people think shit that they never say all the time and they laugh at shit they never thought they would laugh at all the time too. It doesn't make them horrible people, it makes them human. A true test of a person is their actions anyway, not their words.
Just because you find it funny (and I have no problem with that) doesn't mean everybody should.
Definitely true. If someone says something I find offensive I go somewhere else. I don't hang around places that offend me. You should try it sometime.
But not everybody finds it funny, and you're stupid if you don't know that, and insensitive if you do.
I am insensitive but I don't really care. If you don't find it funny then turn around and walk away. I'm not asking you to conversate with me.
My guess is people who lost parents in Hiroshima don't find it funny
Tell me how many hiroshima survivors do you know on slashdot? How many holocaust survivors do you know on slashdot? It's funny that there is always some unspecified period of time that has to go by until you are allowed to joke about some horrible event and if you are one to break the silence prematurely you are castigated.
Look, it's not like I don't care about what happened in hiroshima or the nazi concentration camps but the fact is there is no one, except sensitive prudes like you, on slashdot that is going to get offended. You're the type of person that lives to get offended so you can complain about it even when it has nothing to do with you. Here's my advice to you, lighten up. Laughter is the best medicine.
Pulling a number out of your ass doesn't make your case for you. Have you thought about the human life the US has taken in this war?
there are plenty of coutnerarguments pointing out the instability of the region due to Saddam and the possible positive long-term effects of removing empowered dictators with grudges against open societies. Saddam would have just passed power to his even crazier sons.
That's an odd thing to say considering Iraq is now MORE unstable and in fact although Saddam was a cruel dictator he actually repressed religious extremists. Now Iraq is on the brink of civil war and it will either get bloodier or in the end it will be ruled by a dictator again.
Emotively calling them "criminals" just makes you look like another looney lefty that most people don't respond to very well, particularly considering that Clinton bombed plenty of places without UN permission and let terrorists (including Bin Laden) go all the time. Somehow, I doubt you complained back then.
You're the one that sounds like a looney. It's amazing how you conservatives can never account for your beloved president's actions so you end up criticizing Clinton like I even give a fuck about Clinton. He wasn't even left wing so what the hell are you talking about anyway? Bush, on the other hand IS a CRIMINAL. He authorized an attack on a country that did not attack us in any way, shape, or form. That is a crime whether you want to believe it or not.
Oh and that bullshit about Clinton letting bin Laden go. IT'S A MYTH! Why don't you get a clue and stop repeating the same old bullshit that was proven false years ago.
REALLY FUNNY considering we just had the anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Perhaps you want to joke about the Jewish holocaust or the slaughter of the Native American indians.
It is really funny. Hell I even joke about the holocaust and Native American slaughter. Guess what, so do my Jewish and Native American friends. If you don't have a sense of humor then I pity you.
I'm about as liberal as can be but I absolutely hate political correctness. It doesn't help anyone, it just gives some jerkoffs the opportunity to complain about trivial shit. If you really want to complain about something try taking a stab at shit that is going on now and affecting us now like the criminals in office and their illegal war, illegal torture, and illegal detention.
But otherwise, I'm sure there's still a
couple of people around here with the 1.4 profile
I did have a 1.4 profile until a few months ago but I was finally forced to upgrade it. That's not bad for a 1.4-rc2 livecd install from two years ago. Updating Redhat was a nightmare when I had to do that. It was more frequent and broke many packages.
You are correct in the temporal sense that science has taken us further than religion, but temporal earthly progress is not always everyone's goal and definition of 'far'. This is really a moot point to argue and really goes purely into belief on each of our parts -- funny, much of what we both say is this way!
I agree. Like I said previously, I am not Christian but I respect others' religion and I myself have a belief in something greater. I am a very spiritual and philisopchical person and I do think creation and such should be discussed but not as a scientific endeavor, instead it should be discussed philisohically. I also agree that science is not the only way to progress. Spiritually, or for some, religion, can bring us to greater heights than science can in some aspects.
I pray that God will bless you, regardless of your belief in Him
Thank you.
I am not an atheist but I am also not a part of any religion, so I can say that I believe in a "god" even if my "god" is not the same concept as yours. Regardless, your intelligence and tolerance has shown me that God has already blessed you.
Antivir is great. Put it on a bootable PE disk and wipe out those nasty viruses that are running in memory on a normal startup. It's probably one of the best free ones in my opinion. Oh you mean pseudo-scientists like IDers?
I'm not sure about actual usage statistics but R is better than Stata.

You're looking for Flashblock.
word:
1/2. Buy MS Office for $350
1. turn on your computer
2. watch your operating system boot
3. start microsoft office
That is going to be the biggest difference and you didn't even mention it.
That's a little vague. Not all copyright infringement is considered "criminal infringement of copyright". In fact most filesharers do not fall into this category. Ain't that the truth. My designer needs wysiwyg interfaces, I don't. Hand coding pages really isn't that bad at all anyway, especially with XHTML/CSS.
Maybe you should have specified that. 3D acceleration is helpful for more than just the latest games.
educate yourself before you make a stupid post.
You are the one who needs an education. New Orleans is where it is exactly because of business. You can't get much more important to business than being right on the Gulf and connected to the Mississippi.
Old ati cards have open source drivers and have had them for a long time now.
Ha. Good luck. MS is known for their late releases. Ever hear of windows 97? Vista will come out in 2007. Get over it.
Now that IS offensive. It's funny that after this whole discussion you cannot realize why that is offensive.
