It can be a pain but assuming that you really want the hinge fixed and have backup up your data why not just blast your hard drive.
Now take it back to the store and claim that the OS hosed itself and also ask them to fix the hinge at the same time. They will try to charge you to load Windoze again but just politely refuse and ask them to look into the cause of the OS "hosing" itself and then bring up the hinge fixing bit.
If your are well organized it shouldn't take that long to rebuild the machine.
Two independent events here. You pay the sales tax at POP. End of tax period the sales tax is calculated and sent to the appropriate taxing authority. Rebate is processed by the processing house (may even be the same company you bought item from but usually an independent processing house). Rebate processing house will be prefunded to a certain amount by the rebate sponsor. Rebates sent to the requestor. Processing house deducts rebate amount + processing fee from prepaid manufacturer's account. No further action on sales tax takes place. In fact it is the state that makes out on these rebates. If the discount were offered at checkout then the state would not get the tax money on the rebate amounts.
BTW I have done hundreds of rebates and NEVER ever didn't get one of them. 5% perhaps required follow up calls.
A interesting story. Recently I received a postcard re a $50.00 rebate amount that I received in the form of a check about two years ago but misplaced and forgot about until the check became stale. Anyway the card wanted me to reapply for the $50.00 (simply sign the form and mail to them) and they would send the $50.00 otherwise it would be sent to the State (unclaimed property generally belongs to the State). I had given up on this $50.00 but it will now treat me to a good off-Broadway play and a nice dinner!!!
Have been doing rebates for nigh on three years now and have NEVER had one "missing". Sure I have had my share of phone calls to make but I have ALWAYS received my rebate.
Somewhere around $2300.00 in rebates in this period. Haven't done very much recently because I don't see much that I need to buy anyway.
In general a company doesn't want to lower their price. On some items it creates the effect of being of "lower class". Rebates is one way the can lower prices without actually lowering them. Once a lower price point is estabilised it is harder to raise it again.
I do take advantage of rebates. Stopped recently just because I have pretty much all the computer equipment that I need for right now.
During the 2001-2002 years the rebates were going fast and furious. The discounts/rebates are not as prevalent now. During an 18 month period I got some $2500.00 in rebates. Was never refused a single one.
Perhaps at the undergraduate level and at some colleges it can be considered a "joke". That too depends on the curriculum.
I had my formal education overseas and it was tough. It stood me in great stead though when it came to technical colleges.
I did find that in undergraduate school in the introductory courses the level was not that demanding. That changed though as one came nearer graduation (expecially if you wanted an almost perfect 4.0 GPA). In graduate school (I liked it so much that I got two Masters degrees) I found the level quite challenging.
I do agree with the portion that our Primary and Secondary schools fail to teach math. A little anecdote here. I volunteer to teach SAT prep math courses. Now these are kids who do need the help and I find that only about 20% seem to have a grasp of the fundamentals.
They look with amazement when they have to manipulate a few numbers and I am able to give them the answer from my head in a few seconds and that answer is usally pretty accurate.
BTW I am also a Project Manager and I find that I do not have to use my technical background all that much. Granted that I may be using it subconsiously but I feel that a lot of what I do is just basic common sense and learning to be persistent.
I used to work for an electric utility years ago while going to school at night. Used to work on live 110 and 220 and certainly learned to respect it. Safety was the number 1 mantra we always heard. Safety glasses, long sleeve shirts and doe skin gloves (we did some small work and needed the subtleness that they provided).
I have been in literally many hundreds of premises and it's hard to believe the wiring that you see. The old cloth wire literally flaking off when you touch it.
Anyway my advice is to stay far away from it. Hire an electrician or someone you don't like who is not an electrician.
Even yet when I work on electricity I ALWAYS make sure that the breaker is off with tape over it. Since it is at home I don't have to worry about another idiot turning the breaker back on.
The process of rewiring is not difficult. It just requires knowledge that you only gain through time.
If you have never seen glasses with metal embeded in them or a thick screwdriver with a large gouge out of the shank then just go ahead and do the job yourself so you can provide an exhibit to an incoming electrician's class.
I seldom do any work for family any more. I have refused to do so before and I guess that the work got around.
I have often stated that I have relatives who are plumbers/carpenters and yet I wouldn't ask them to help me without compensation. It seems lke they have no trouble asking me to help them but without any mention of compensation.
Anyway when I am asked I usually ask them to bring their machine around to my place so that I can work on it. Since it is too much of a hastle for them to do this they typically never show up.
Just two evenings ago I was speaking with my sister. She mentioned a PC that she gave me about a month ago (space problem for her) and that I put about 12 hours into getting up and running the way that I wanted it. She asked for it back!!!! I politely refused and asked her why she wanted it back. She complained that she couldn't click on a URL and get it to open and yet they old machine was able to do this!!!! Why call me when she can call AOL support.
If I had aquiesed to her request I would have ended up bringing her the old machine, setting it up, transferring files etc. All because she didn't want to call AOL!!!!
Purchase this camera in 1966 in Singapore while on R&R from Vietnam. Still have the first picture I took with it (the guy who sold me the camera). I don't use it very much now though but it is still working.
Also have a Arrow T25 Stapler from 1968 that I still use for stapling wires. It is still in perfect condition.

As someone with both an MSc and MBA I would also agree. A warm body with a brain is a very precious commodity!!!!

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!
HIRE AN ELECTRICIAN
I do the same thing. Satisfied with my 15" LCD that I purchased over a year ago for about $160.00
What version of Windows? ...../etc/hosts directory
Not all of them have the
(One I attempted to change didn't anyway).
