No, here in the UK locked phones is still very much a done thing, with small businesses making money from unlocking them. However, this is because the phones are subsidised in price, so you either get it for free or pittance.
Normally, if you buy a phone costing what apple are charging for the iphone (£269) as part of the contract, you get get an unlocked phone with no plan.
Most chips operate well within their tolerances, anyway, so overclocking them isn't always that big a deal. The thing is, would you really want to trust this day in day out for critical and CPU intensive apps, say Video Editing, etc it its over clocked state?
In other words...
1. Get hold of a dodgy copy of windows
2. Wait for M$ to detect its dodgyness
3. Claim discount and sell resultant copy on ebay
4. ????
5. Profit!!
I'm guessing that if the security updates are still going to come through, then that is all that is really required of windows update. The "non critical" items which appear in windows are generaly superfluous anyway. As an example: Windows Media Player or the.Net framework - is it possible to download those from other websites anyay, quite easily.
If they do prevent security updates coming through, then as has been discussed on/. before it is liable to create more harm as boxes become out of date and unpatched.
And lastly - theres always the possibility that there will be a way around this.
PC World store in the UK are already doing this - their instore radio service is *appears* to be sponsored by Symantec, and through the day these virus 'alerts' get honked out. OMG NEW VIRUS! BUY SYMANTEC AV!

Sure thing - i've got two old & broken sky analogue / VHS combos stashed away at home. Used to come in extremely handy when we had Sky Movies;)
And the work around for this idea would more than likely be to copy the duped cd. Who cares if you only have (say) 5 times to copy it? Just copy the CDR, D'oh!
I totally agree - i've seen better!
Today i needed to activate a freshly installed machine, so i duly use the built in microsoft freephone dial up mechanism to sort it. By the time the phone had disconnected and activated the OS, the unit had contracted Blaster!
Most people i know don't bother with TV too much anymore, they sit on the net at home, chatting on MSN and IRC, etc.
Most things that people want thesedays for entertainment (Movies, Games, Music, Literature etc) can all be found online.
I also work on PC Repairs and the number of customers who walk in with a Gold CDR with the GC6J3...serial number written on it is quite suprising. When you tell the customer that we cant work on their machine because they have the Warez version of windows they can sometimes get quite arsey about it. Others, usually the rich ones or the older generation just give in when they hear it and go and buy a legit copy.
Heh, when i bought my ipod, i didn't bother using the stock earphones, granted i tried them, but i find them very good. Plus i didn't want to show the world that i owned an ipod and so carried on using my beloved Bang and Olufsen earphone ( They may cost $150 but they are the dogs ). I lent my ipod earphones to a mate who had a crappy 128MB MP3 player and he had the pleasure of people asking him if he had an ipod. Plus he looked stupid when he pulled out a battered MP3 player
The article didnt give any particulary useful information, just stating the obvious. It was nothing more than a small plug for the new types of batteries that are due to be launched.
And anyway, it's common sense not to leave batteries unattended in hot conditions, etc.
Argh, but saying that, my NEC laptop's battery does get extremely hot during use, usually by conducted heat from the whole laptop. So did my old vaios' too.
I've used my Sony Vaio (PCG F304 for those interested) nigh on every day for about 4 years now. It's been dropped, bounced, kicked, carried by the screen only, carried by the cdrom drawer, and dropped hard a few times off the car seat when i have braked hard a few times. The bugger works perfectly and im still using it to code on in university. It's quite funny to plug in in to thewlaptop dock areas next to the spanking new rich kid laptops, and theres my hammered smoothened cased PII 366 vaio (it used to be a nice metallic purpley colour one, now its a patchy grey), but it's going strong! It's currently on my bed under a pile of library books;)
Working as a technicican i usually do lazy things...Today ive hotplugged a few drives (seagates and maxtors) whilst in the bios to get the boot config correct, and i hotplugged a radeon 9700 pro without thinking...hell, if it breaks ill get another off a shelf;)
They look like phones (well, my Pearl certainly does) and it handles "Smartphone" or "PDA" functions, but its primarily my phone. They can bugger off.

Actually, no, it's really not. This is a gaming laptop for god's sake!
60gb hard drive? OMG I CAN DOWNLOAD THE INTARWEB ONTO THAT.
I would assume that is a glaring typo...
It won't be long until we have the first speaker virus, which starts shouting "GOATSE LOVERS!" rather loudly in an infinite loop.

How indeed very true.
