  1. Easy code fix on New IE Bug Hides Real Site Address · · Score: 1

I'd imagine that a fix for this would be easy; the code for null-handling (%00) could be extended to handle "Start of Heading" (%01). In pseudocode, change:

    if char = 0 then
    'something
    end if

    To:

    if char = 0 or char = 1 then
    'something
    end if

  2. Easy Spamassassin for Windows on Critical Eye on SpamAssassin · · Score: 1

I just started using SAProxy on Windows, after Consumer Reports rated it the best anti-spam tool. It's a POP proxy with SA embedded. Quite easy to use, and effective. See http://www.statalabs.com/ .

  3. How does it know what type? on AMTP as an Alternative to SMTP · · Score: 1

I read the Draft, and I see no provision for the user to specify what type of message he's sending. Surely the mail server cannot make a determination itself.

  4. Microwave ovens on Wireless Electricity Set to Power Village · · Score: 1
Great points. To followup, fears of cooked birds are unfounded. To my understanding, microwave ovens work by emitting high-power radio energy at a frequency resonant with water. This causes water molecules to vibrate, causing heat, which dissipates into the surrounding matter. The article (mirrored below) states that this system would use a different frequency for the transmission, thereby avoiding the heating of inline atmospheric water or avian material.

Many FM radio stations have had this for a long time, called Radiotext or RDS (Radio Data System). It'll display the station name, format, song title, artist, and any other data the station chooses to send. Few factory-installed receivers support this, but it's available in higher-end new cars and aftermarket.

  7. Re:What's the big deal? on Photographer Fired For Digitally Altering Photo · · Score: 1

It is impossible to restore the original eye color in a "red eye" photo. You could only reproduce the color if you knew the original color, or guessed.

  8. AP cannot edit photos on Photographer Fired For Digitally Altering Photo · · Score: 1

I support disallowing the media to edit photos they state to be factual. Ramifications of doctoring images are not always immediately evident. After 9/11, an Associated Press photo of smoke coming from the World Trade Center looked like a devil's face. Upon questioning, the AP stated that they do not permit photos to be edited in any way.

  9. More taxes, not more. on BSA IDC FUD · · Score: 1

Your quote is back-asswards. I presume it relates to sales taxes. My commercial clients buy software across state lines from companies like CDW, so there is no sales tax to start with.

To further the argument, if a business didn't have to spend as much on software, they'd have a bigger bottom line, hence pay more income taxes.

  10. What I did... on George Foreman USB iGrill · · Score: 1

For April 1, I changed my company's local DNS servers so Yahoo resolves to Google's IP, Google resolves to Altavista, and Altavista resolves to Yahoo.

    So far, nobody's noticed. Damn.

  11. Wireless 56k with Sprint PCS Vision on Geek Roadtrips Through the Heartland · · Score: 2, Informative
I took a roadtrip across the state recently and brought my Treo 300, laptop, and serial cable. Using Sprint's PCS Vision service and the phone as an external modem, I had a wireless 56k connection the whole way. My Vision service is unlimited, so I was streaming audio, AIM, reading Slashdot, etc.

I used WirelessModem, a shareware PalmOS app that bridges the Treo's serial port and built-in wireless modem. Yes, it works in Linux, MacOS, and Windows. Supposedly, the USB cable even works in Linux and MacOS.

Be aware that Sprint's transparent proxy re-compresses Web images, similarly to AOL. The maximum theoretical rate is 144kbps, but I haven't yet achieved that due to weirdness in Windows's modem drivers.

  13. Void marketing scheme? on Yet Another Perl Conference - Canada · · Score: 5, Interesting

I smell a marketing scheme. According to yapc.ca, the only scheduled training sessions are from employees of ExitCertified, an IT training company. Conveniently, ExitCertified is also in Ottawa. Further, why would I fly to a conference where they're still looking for speakers *two months* out? All they have are "Dick Hardt, founder of ActiveState" and two ExitCertified guys. If you want a truly amazing training/networking/fun experience, try a GeekCruise. I went on Linux Lunacy II in the Caribbean and hung out with Linus, Guido van Roosum (sp; invented Python), and Eric S. Raymond.
