Everybody knows that these conferences only serve one purpose: to put on a resume or CV under a "Conferences Attended" heading, and it's not like a Perl conference is on the same level as a Homeland Technology Security conference or anything. Even worse, you have to pay to go. Are all conferences like that? No wonder the whole "free as in beer" software movement took off; everybody was sick of paying for shit they were forced into. Sort of like ANSI, or the ISO. If they want something to be a standard, they have to make it accessible, and charging $18 for a pdf of the C99 standard doesn't count as accessible. Publicly available standards are the wave of the future. The "standards bodies" should start looking hard at the way RFCs are done, because that'll be the way all standards are done in the future.

Also, it'd be nice for all academic papers to be put online. It's ridiculous to have to order some book from a conference (at top dollar) just to keep current on things. I'm sure that there're professional organizations at the root of this. They resemble the RIAA at times.
