That's complete nonsense. You cannot be independent and perform well on all databases. You've obviously not dealt w/ databases in the Terabyte range. Each and every database has a different optimizer and processes queries and retrieves data in a different manner. Knowing how a specific optimizer works and taking advantage of that is how you get kick ass performance. Besides, when you buy something like Oracle and do not use any of it's features or even optimize for it, you are seriously losing out on ROI.

The premature optimization is evil crowd is the same crowd that writes buggy, crappy enterprise software in the first place. It's an excuse used by totally ignorant developers who have no idea how to optimize in the first place. It takes the same amount of time to optimize something as not too.

If you don't really need to optimize because you will never be at a high data volume or performance, then that's perfectly fine and makes sense.

  14. Stop the madness... on Web Design Hampers Mobile Internet? · · Score: -1, Troll

The problem is that it takes way too much effort to design and code websites for all situations. If you don't think so, then you either are at HTML 1.0 or you haven't really designed a site for all different browsers. You have to make sure it works for all browsers on all operating systems. Just because your website looks good on IE, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera on windows doesn't mean that it will on IE, Mozilla, Netscape, Safari or Camino on a Mac. Then you have to do the same for all the Linux browsers. Now you have to worry about 3 zillion mobile platforms too. You're pretty much limited to a search box and a GO button or a few links with item names and prices or 1 paragraph news stories. Screw that. Just because you're on some little ass phone with a lame ass screen and a shitty connection doesn't mean anyone has to support you. That's like making a music player that supports .mp3's, cd's, 8-tracks, cassettes and records all in one. Get a real connection and get a real computer. Phones are for calling, not surfing the web.
