Yes, but the market spoke, and it said "Windows"
All of those people could have bought TRS-80's, Commodore 64's, Amigas, Atari STs, Macs or they can run Linux now.
Nobody twisted anyone's arm and made them buy Windows. That's not a monopoly. A company that has a monopoly seals in the customers fate in that the customer has no other choice. Period.
Like when you could only get AT&T phone service in the states. There were no other phone companies. You were screwed.
With computers, it's different and ALWAYS has been. I had a Commodore 64 and an Amiga.
Nobody forced me to buy a Windows box. People bought them because Windows catered to the business market and other computer makers didn't do so effectively. Look at Apple's pathetic attempt even today. What id Sun do for the consumer? Nothing.
People wanted to use (in 99% of cases steal) the same software and run it at home, so they chose Windows.
So, where's the monopoly? Did Bill Gates twist your arm??
I run Linux and Mac OS X and the only MS product I use is Office, and that's my choice.
Telling a company what they can distribute with their own product is very dangerous and the goverment is out of line.
Nazz
Telling MS that they cannot bundle WMP with their OS is absolutely absurd. Come on people, drop your hate for a freakin' second.
That's like telling Linux distros they can no longer bundle Apache.
It's their OS, they can bundle whatever the fuck they want. This monopoloy bullshit is stupid too. If you don't like Windows, get Linux or a Mac. MS didn't force anyone to ever buy Windows.
All of these businesses and governments that are bitching & moaning could have bought Macs for the past 20 years instead of windows boxes. If that would have happened, they would now be bitching to Steve jobs about bundling Safari with OS X.
The real issue is that when someone or a company gets their hands on large sums of money, the rest of the scumbags will try every way in hell to get a piece of the pie. Bastards.
People like useless "Program Managers" or "Project Managers" that have zero knowledge of software are abundant in the IT field.
You don't have construction managers who haven't picked up a hammer or saw before overseeing skyscrapers being built.
But, the IT industry thinks it's just fine to have people with zero software knowledge running large IT projects.
That's the real reason 75% of IT projects are failues, either not what the customer wanted, over budget or just plain buggy as hell.
Once you have good requirements and a reasonable design, it's all about fingers hitting keyboards. The less finger / keyboard time, the further behind the project gets.
Going to useless meetings and doing anything else that time away from a design revision or away from coding is a useless activity.
Unfortunately, programmers usually do all kinds of other useless crap other than code.
...bundle other apps w/ their OS. They have to in order to compete. It's just that the idiots in the US and European courts don't have a clue along w/ a lot of the anti Microsoft crowd.
I'm not really a big MS proponent, but they have to have the right to compete as well. Saying they can't bundle Windows Media 9 w/ their OS, for example, is ludicrous.
With a Linux Distro that is free, you can bundle anything you want, and ultimately, Linux could do serious damage to Microsoft.
But, I don't like what the courts are doing. A company, including MS, has the right to compete and leverage their own technology platform.
If I were Gates, I'd pack up my company and move someplace with a friendlier business climate.
Well, my iMac is better than my box running Redhat and my iPod is the best mp3 player on the market.
So both are probaby significantly better than what you have, but that's a matter of opinion.
Before OS X, I admit, I wouldn't go near Apple products either. But it's a whole new ball game now, especially with the G5 chips.
Apple has 4 billion in cash and zero debt. As the Money magazine article stated, Apple makes more money from the interest on their pile of cash than they do in profit.
But, they make 60 some million on both. That's 120 million a year in profit and no debt.
The guy who wrote this article has an axe to grind and that's all.
I would love to be in Apple's position.
That's not a monopoly. I bought Netscape for $49.99 at one point, then a free product comes along. A free product like the retards of Open Source often advocate. Well, that free product sucked at first, but got equal to Netscape and, well, who wants to pay for something they can get for free.
People don't want to waste their valuable time writing code to support various browsers. It's a waste of time, so they will pick the most popular one.
My back only uses Netscape, which means I cannot use Safari on Mac OS X.
It's their decision, but nothing to do w/ a monopoly.
Right, that illegal way forced all the consumers to go and buy windows. Yeah, right.
People bought windows not because of some illegal monopoly, but because no one else even went after the mass market. Not anyone w/ Unix, not Apple, not Amiga, not Atari. Only MS targeted the business community.
I use all Apple OS X now, but look at their pathetic attempt to gain access into corporate America. It's a joke.
NASA spent $860 on two rovers to tell everyone that Mars once had water! Amazing.
Just give us another billion and we'll tell you that found evidence of bacteria. Wow.
For another billion, we'll go to Neptune and tell you that once, Neptune had dirt. Wow.
For Christ's sake, stop whining about Microsoft. What freakin' Monopoly? I'm here using Mac OS X and the only MS product I use is Office, and that's because I want to. A monopoly is where you don't have another choice, like AT&T used to be. You couldn't switch phone services because there was no one else.
There's nothing preventing any company in the world from switching to FreeBSD, Linux or Mac OS X. I've worked at a company that used nothing from MS. We used Linux, Informix, JBoss and Star Office.
I wish the courts would stop listening to this nonsense as well. It hurts the whole industry.
Sure it sounds great, but when major corporations are running Linux with free applications like office suites, billing systems, CRM systems, ERP systems, etc. it's great for them, but where's the money for you?
In the maintenance you say, in the implementation? Yeah, right, that will get shipped overseas where the labor is cheap and all you'll be left with is your copy of Linux without the money to pay for your DSL connection.
The free software idiots will put you out of a job. Anybody that works on creating free software is working on their own demise, whether they want to believe it or not.
If there are plenty of US workers out of work, why are software companies still lobbying congress that they need more foreign workers here in the US? This is bullshit.
You want to outsource, fine. But, when there are plenty of hi-tech workers that are jobless, there should NOT be an H-1 program for the hi-tech industry.
Companies want to outsource your job and insource the rest with cheap H-1 labor, while they work them for low wages for 5-6 years waiting on their green card.
I've been in two place where we had a Teradata in DSS environments. We didn't even use indexes as w/ their MPP architecture it's almost always faster to do full table scans, especially w/ large DSS queries.
If we cannot build a better, more powerful and cheaper rocket today than 30 years ago, then we should drop the bomb on ourselves.
We lost the plans...what kind of shit is that? Fuck the plans...make new ones...
You don't kill or maim your enemy, you reprogram the stupid bastard to be your friend an ally via a custom virus that reprograms his DNA. This will be the preferred weapon of the future.
One direct hit to Baghdad, and then 2 days later they're waving American flags and putting up pictures of Bush.

Regardless of what the others say, those screenshots are so fuckin' ugly, i wouldn't use the tool. Better to get your vi on.
