    This is Dumb Geek Outsourcing (DGO). Companies can minimize development cost by developing the idea, framework and setting the project direction. Then, all the company has to do is outsource to the dumb geeks that work for free and the company can make a handsome profit. I've never seen a dumber bunch of geeks in my life working so hard and not getting paid. I say, exploit the dumb geek working for free just like IBM, Sun, Redhat and others do.     The "scientists" can't explain the cyclical nature of ice ages and now all of the sudden they are sure the climate is changing due to CO2 emissions? Complete bullshit. Sure, the temperature might be rising, ice melting, etc. but to directly relate evidence A to bullshit conclusion B, is nonsense. These are the same scientist that know squat about the weather in general and have extremely small data regarding global climate data as a whole from the past 4 billion years. They got about 50 years data and some ice core samples...whoopity shit. You call that science?

Yet, you only have 2 cash registers of your 30, actually open at any one time because you want to save money. Here's an idea, open all of your cash registers every operating hour of the day and advertize..."No lines in our store, ever" The sales from that will more than pay for the shitty wages that you think you're saving. I don't know how many times I've dropped my items and walked out of Best Buy/Home Depot/etc. because those idiots had 2 registers open with a huge line.

    Well, you chould be charging licensing fees as well as $120/hr to implement and support it. So, you're giving away more than half your potential revenues. That's not too bright if you ask me. It's like a restaurant giving away free meals so they can make money off of deserts and drinks. Sure, they'll make some money, but it's a dumb ass business model that's missing out on half their revenues. Sounds like the internet days of 1998. When someone else makes the same product as yours only much better and gives it away for free, you'll be toast, like Netscape.

    Free software, like Linux, is putting a dent into MS as well as other companies profit. Throw in a kick ass free database and Oracle is toast, BEA and IBM should be losing money because of JBoss, etc. When those guys get hit hard, people get fired like about 3,000 from Sun, who in their own stupidity is comodotizing their own hardware business. Once I write some kick ass open source and free as in beer system management system, company's won't need people like you.

    People that work for free are idiots. Hey, lets all work for free, then give away our software too we should be able to pay the mortgage and car loan from our monthly paycheck of $0. Count how may people who worked for free on something has ended up paying their bills by doing so? There's not 1,000,000 people working for free and making a living doing so. Anyone who would work on software for free and give it away is either 1) a student or 2) a complete idiot. I wish I had 20 people willing to work for free everyday. Hell, I'll start a cool bar or restaurant and make a ton of money. Companies are making money on open source software, but those companies were VC funded for one and two they pay their employees. I just don't understand why anyone would work for free.

    He talks about education and competing. Companies are NOT moving jobs overseas because people there are more educated or do a better job. They move overseas because they can pay them 5k per year.     It would only be morally wrong when a government outsources work to other countries. Why? Because taking my tax money and using that to fuck me out of a job is immoral. This is not the case here though. It's perfectly fine to see cheaper ways to develop software. But, really, if they were that good in India, I just don't see it. Of course they have some brilliant people, but as a whole, where's the software? Where is IndiaOS? Where is a good indian database? If they are so good at producing quality software cheaply, BestBuy and CompUSA should just be flooded with software strictly from Indian companies, but they're not. Oh, they don't compete in the consumer vertical you say? Fine. Then they should not need to take some crappy outsourcing work from companies like Microsoft or Oracle, they should be writing their own software to crush them if they we're that good. But they are not.

    Well, I use DB2 on a P690 and let me tell you, if I were running the business there's no way in hell I would even use DB2, even if it were free. It's bloated, cumbersome, buggy and just bad. Oracle is way better. We have to use DB2 because we partnered w/ IBM. In my experience with IBM, I haven't seen a decent piece of software from them yet. Their hardware kicks ass though. :-)
