    *baffled look*

    After years and years of Windows/Solaris usage, I finally went out and bought a mac. The OS was stable and unixlike to the point where I couldn't rationalize -not- buying one.

    Now, every 8th story on /. is about some angry competitor swearing off the mac. What exactly is causing this? Personally, I'd have to go with the incredible ease of use that Safari/FCP/etc 'suffer' from, but there has to be something else.

    Could enough people actually be buying macs now that companies are purposefully trying to pull out of the market to cease the flow of new mac purchasers?

    limewire?

    Can you think of a single language/runtime that feels so out of place no matter what platform you're running on? A platform that makes you deal with CLASSPATH, non-native and slow widgets, and shell scripts to set a thousand environment variables before starting your "portable" application?

    erm.. perl? isn't this what jar's are created for?

    Can you think of a single problem domain where Java offers greater portability than the competition?

    VB?

    java is the solution for me because i want to spend my time -writing applications-, not fussing about with threads and low-level nonsense -IF I DON'T NEED TO-.

    i like java. i like the syntax, i like the documentation, and i like the portability. now, everyone start crying how System.out.print() doesn't work on HP-UX or another JVM not created by sun..

  10. eh? on Apple's G5 Speeds Challenged · · Score: 5, Funny
    Both Apple and Dell are guilty of using misleading prices. For example, Apple gives the price of the low-end G5 as "$1999", and the high-end G5 as "$2999". In other words, they have subtracted $1 from a $3000 computer to make it seem cheaper, which is absolutely ridiculous. This demonstrates that both Apple and Dell are willing to mislead people when stating their prices.

    myself, i totally agree with what 90% of the RIAA guy says. we should -NOT- forget that we did not :

    * write the music
    * produce the music
    * manufacture/ship/sell the music

    now before i get totally flamed, i 100% agree that we should be able to copy/backup music WE PERSONALLY bought for PRIVATE usage. i doubt anyone here can argue with that. however, we honestly have -NO- right to give away the music on a transferable media (tape/cd/mp3/etc). it really is nothing except stealing.

    i'm not going to disagree with the fact that cd's are overpriced. they are, no shit. however, running around screaming freedom like RMS on acid isn't going to change the price of cd's. we need to either start supporting stores like apple's iTunes, actually not buying cd's, or both. everyone on here rants saying they don't buy anything new, but i doubt more than 30% are honest.

    fairuse is fairuse, but if there was an online suit about some small programmer getting ripped off by AOL, we'd be all over it like jackals. be rational, not radical. it's a money business, and although most of the pop music nowadays is fairly horrible IMO, people are buying it. so, stop.
