i agree that he sometimes get a little long winded in description in quicksilver which i'm still reading right now. the only other book of his i read was snow crash. i read the first 2 pages of cryptonomicon and gave up cause i just didn't feel like reading it at the time, so i read a vonnegut book instead. sometimes when he gets especially over the top in description i just scan several paragraphs ahead til soemthing actually happens. this makes the book much more enjoyable. i'll probably read the rest of the baroque cycle too, but thats just because my fiancee brings the advance copies home from work for me free. i definitely won't read them straight through though, that would be overkill.
okay fine, then hell is the absence of God, sounds great to me. and i have a hard time believing that there is no good; nothing worthwhile; nothing of value there. there would be other people there (something of value, something worthwhile) and possibly there would be many good people there as well, good people who just do not accept jesus as their savior if christianity is correct. so i'm sure they would be a help, a comfort, and quite a good place to be.
what you say of course makes sense. it is why i am mostly apathetic towards politics. i find the entire system corrupt. i look towards a less centralized way of helping people. i still gives bums money. most probably spend it on drugs but i've seen some go straight to mcdonalds with it. i try to help those around me that i know need help. when a friend lost his job and it took him a month to find a new one, i went to his house most days and brought groceries and we all cooked and they got to eat a lot better than ramen noodles. people (in general) just don't care enough about the people around them. i volunteer places. and i sleep better being an emotional person. it is not for everyone. i admit to being somewhat of a coward, but i feel better that way. i wish federal programs worked better, but if welfare helps even 10% of those that use it then it doesn't need to be gotten rid of, it may need reform, but it has value. i would gladly pay higher taxes if i knew that every one got to eat.
so uh, whats the rest of the sig supposed to be then? just wondering? also isn't christianity by default anti-semetic? i mean you christianity says that you have to believe in jesus to go to heaven so since jews don't believe in jesus as the savior then they are going to hell. the idea that a person is going to burn forever and ever after they die sounds pretty much like hate to me. if you are going to believe in religion, and that god is love wouldn't it make more sense to believe that god would let people into heaven based on they way the behave and treat people?
[can't help but feed a rabid right wing troll] As a human being I take your comment a compliment. Thank you. Of course I vote with emotion, it being the more noble reason to vote than logic. I vote on emotion, I vote based on the idea of thinking the best of humanity and trying to help the most people. Emotionally I am tied to ideas like socialized health care and free food for everyone, emotionally I believe everyone has a right to live and a right to things neccessary to maintain life, free of charge. Logically I know how flawed this is, that it will be taken advantage of, abused, etc. But humanity is deserving of our forgiveness for its erring ways and the best must be thought of everyone at all times. This is the human in me, this is what is humane in me. Logic is too cold, too unfeeling and thus the reason why I choose to eschew logic for the warmth and caring of emotion. [ps - i am no way a christian]
just wondering if you know about the 120 character limit on sigs.
Your sig looks like this: "__ Jesus Loves you! He died in your place so you would not have to die and go to Hell. Salvation is a free gift, you ju"
I wonder if you mean for that to end in something like "you just have to accept Jesus in your heart or some other Christain dealy or if you really meant for it to sound like an anti-semetic "you jew" type thing.
i realize there are many ways for me to get news. i do get my news almost exclusively from the web, though i tend to prefer to read articles and not watch talking heads even over the web. as pointed out above, i could even get it from the free channels i do get, but really i try not to watch tv very often. i read bbc, drudge, slashdot, ananova (quirkies), and the nytimes regularly, and sometimes i check cnn, but i take everything i read with a grain of salt. i asn't saying there was no news, i guess i was merely ranting that tv sucks, and the cable corporations even more so because they won't let me choose only a few select channels. the only channel i really wish i could have is hbo, and only for six feet under really, so instead i buy each season on dvd and download the ones that aren't out yet. i watch a bunch of movies too, not saying saying everything on a screen is bad, just tv is so low quality and commercials drive me freakin nuts!
I'd love to watch an international newscast. I absolutely hate local news, hell I can't even stand CNN, FOXNews, or MSNBC. But to get international news I'd have to get cable [which I dont have because it completely fucking sucks] and then I'd have to get super extended mega 200 channel cable just to get BBC international or whatever, and then if I really wanted some real foreign news I'd have to buy the internation block on top of that to get one japanese, one russian, and several other foreign channels. At like 100 bucks a month it is just not worth it. So instead I only get the channels I can pull out of the air for free and I only turn that on occasionally for the Simpsons or That 70s Show. I mean sure, I'd love to have Cartoon Network (Aqua Teen/Home Movies/Sealab/Family Guy/Futurama/PowderPuff Girls - yes they fucking rock, no really they do). I might even watch Comedy Central occasionally (Daily Show/Chappelle Show) but I'm not paying an extra 65 bucks a month for that. When it comes down to it TV in America is not worth it and won't be until I can order my channels piecemeal. If I could do that I'd have maybe 10 channels (HBO, Cartoon, Comedy Central, Animal Planet, History Channel, Fox, Discovery Channel and maybe a few others)
actually it seems like lately most of the things available on p2p networks are chopped up and fucked up versions of songs put onto the p2p networks by the record companies
I always hear that argument: let the TV do their imagining for them.
What I want to know is, if the TV is doing the imagining for you, isn't the book sorta doing the imagining for you too? Yes, there are no pictures, but it makes up the story for you.
BTW I read a ton and I don't have cable, just felt like being a smart ass.
It doesn't apply to every site, though almost any site can be sued for no being compliant. Only government sites and school sites are really required to be compliant.
wikipedia has everything, they even have a self-referential entry, are there plans as this grows to have any kind of trusted moderator system? how do you handle people who troll (input bad data, delete good data)?
from wikipedia : "Texas longhorns are a breed of cattle descended from Spanish breeds that escaped settlements in Texas. After living feral for a time they were redomesticated."
Could this be likened to microsoft escaping settlements (well a real settlement anyway, giving away free software to further your monopoly is hardly punitive) could the redomestication be the inclusion of the ability to run UNIX code?
the w3c tip index is my favorite usability resource. the word of mr nielsen is second. not quite everything nielsen says is right in every situation but everything the w3c suggests is a suggest worth the weight of my toshiba laptop (a hefty 7 pounds) in gold.
i am a web developer and nielsen is a god around my office. his book, Designing Web Usability (amazon link with no developer token), is something i refer to so often to convince my boss of things.
if you want a magazine with real content, i know playboy may have some decent articles, but the atlantic has some really great articles and little fact blurbs that you can not find anywhere else.
so it is a joke right? i mean there are lots of livejournal jokes: i love the live journal of ripley the cat, the user comments are particularly wonderful
you mean like the category 4 hurricane that just hit us like 2, 3 weeks ago? (charley)

since weapon is defined as
1 : something (as a club, knife, or gun) used to injure, defeat, or destroy
2 : a means of contending against another
does this make having a degree in CS equivalent to being a terrorist bomb making specialist?
