  1. Death By Millimeters on ESA's Cryosat Mission Sees Antarctic Ice Losses Double · · Score: 1

As the article notes, the melt is enough to raise global sea levels by 0.43mm. At this rate, in 100 years the oceans will be 43mm higher (1.7 inches). I guess I'll have to watch Waterworld again because that's not the future I remember.

That list looks like my damn credit card bill for the last 10 years! What would be really cool is if the guide had check boxes and when you hit submit it tells you how much money you wasted on all those shiney new gfx cards over the years.

Wait... on second thought that wouldnt be cool at all.

  3. EULA legislation? on Anti-Spyware Bill up for Vote in Congress · · Score: 2, Insightful
What I'd really love to see is some sort of regulation that tames the one-sided nature of EULAs themselves.

    For instance...

Ability to opt-out (or must opt-in) to tracking/privacy related features.

    Non-solicitation agreements.

    Use of personal information. etc.

Also, force companies to have a brief overview of the EULA so consumers can actually determine what it is they are actually agreeing to without having a law degree.

    A man can dream...

I'll conceed that RAM prices have dropped dramatically over the last year. However, my main point is still valid. It'd be nice if the motherboard (the backbone of your computer) had a longer useful life than the things you plug into it. Otherwise we start heading down the road we've been on lately... every upgrade is replacing your ram/cpu/mobo all at once.

  5. Death of the upgrade. on AMD Moving to a 400MHz Bus? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Anyone remember just a couple years ago when you could actually plan out a simple upgrade to your computer that would make it perform better for a modest price?

Toss in some extra RAM, wow no swapping!
Replace that CPU, doesn't Quake run good now!

The furious pace of bus speed changes have pretty much killed these types of upgrades for home/desktop users. Adding more PC2100 ram to their system when they know they're getting a DDR400 mobo is highly annoying. And forget about popping a new P4 or Athlons into your 1 year old mobo. Gotta buy $300 of new RAM and a $200 new DDR666-PC31337 AsusBitDragonMSI Ultra Deluxe to go with it!

    Bleh.

The rival magazine Newsweek quoted a Middle Eastern intelligence source as saying that an unidentified al-Qaida member "turned over and made a deal with the United States", taking the $25m reward offered and extracting a supplementary $2m in order to relocate with his family to the United Kingdom. A US law enforcement source confirmed that the payment had been made, the magazine said.

$25M and a legal visa... terrorism seems to pay well.

This is exactly why the US taxcode needs a rewrite. But before Congress leaps to action with it's usual cheetah-like speed, maybe I should 'donate' time from my 'consulting' business in the evenings the my middle school teaching kids how to use Google for non-porn searches.

    How does $200/hr sound?

When the producers port it from anime to movie, they will need to work hard to keep the essence of truly good anime... 1. 15-minute-long, psychic S&M duels. 3. Recycle the same footage over and over, should save production costs for live actors too! 2. Use YOUNGER actors to play OLDER characters. 3.
