Likewise.. 1 meg DSL is all we have here. The other negative, from a gamer perspective, is that this does away with resale of old software.. The used game market. I also took away from this, is that it is scaled down and in a window based on your bandwidth. Something like my connection would get 640x480 or something like that.
If somebody doesn't see a huge difference between DVD and Blu-ray, they either need a new TV or a new set of eyes.
I think that is the key. Most people still have standard quality TVs, and in a crappy economy will probably keep them. A DVD looks just fine on that, and a Blu-Ray would not be of any benefit. I got a 60" crt rear projector for free from craigs list a few months ago. It's not HD, but my DVDs and DVR'd and downloaded content looks good enough for me. When the economy recovers, prices of modern TVs will have dropped even more, and it may be worth considering replacing the TV then. By that time though, I bet Blu-Ray will be just an interesting format only used by a select group of videophiles.
Visit their front page, and all you see is an exhortation to give them your email address and some personal details - that tells you everything you need to know about their intentions and the utility of their site. Joining them means being data-mined by Facebook for every ounce of your worth as a consumer.
Which is why I really don't know what is on facebook other than what I have heard through hearsay. Not worth the effort if I can't peek behind the kimono without baring myself.
A Banana republic with a little anarchy thrown in for good measure would probably be the most "free". Obviously, most people would like a little civilization thrown in for good measure. The trick is finding the right balance. My guess would be maybe one of the old eastern block countries. I would have no idea which one though.
Here we stand Like an Adam and an Eve Waterfalls The Garden of Eden Two fools in love So beautiful and strong The birds in the trees Are smiling upon them From the age of the dinosaurs Cars have run on gasoline Where, where have they gone? Now, it's nothing but flowers
There was a factory Now there are mountains and rivers you got it, you got it
We caught a rattlesnake Now we got something for dinner we got it, we got it
There was a shopping mall Now it's all covered with flowers you've got it, you've got it
If this is paradise I wish I had a lawnmower you've got it, you've got it
Years ago I was an angry young man I'd pretend That I was a billboard Standing tall By the side of the road I fell in love With a beautiful highway This used to be real estate Now it's only fields and trees Where, where is the town Now, it's nothing but flowers The highways and cars Were sacrificed for agriculture I thought that we'd start over But I guess I was wrong
Once there were parking lots Now it's a peaceful oasis you got it, you got it
This was a Pizza Hut Now it's all covered with daisies you got it, you got it
I miss the honky tonks, Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens you got it, you got it
And as things fell apart Nobody paid much attention you got it, you got it
I dream of cherry pies, Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies you got it, you got it
We used to microwave Now we just eat nuts and berries you got it, you got it
This was a discount store, Now it's turned into a cornfield you got it, you got it
Don't leave me stranded here I can't get used to this lifestyle
It's not that it doesn't work, it's just that if your GPS happens to be getting a time signal from that one particular satellite, the accuracy might be degraded. The article said +- 20 ft. That's not a big deal. It may be if you were using the GPS to land a plane though. A GPS only needs 3 time signals to triangulate, but can be more accurate if it can see more signals.
I don't doubt the utility, but what does it cost you a year? From what I understand, it's a minimum of $1000 a year for service, plus the cost of the phone. I suppose if your employer pays for the phone, like mine does, or you can write it off as a business expense, it's not a big deal.
I only carry a cell phone because I am required to for work. They let me use it for personal use, but it really is only used that way so I can be given instructions to pick up some groceries on the way home.
I really am a geek, but I don't like being in touch all the time. But as I am a geek, I can appreciate the design and functionality of the IPhone.
As far as the other things.. the GPS stays in the car, as does a 40gb mp3 player. A 30gb mp3 player stays at work. I can't deny that it would be handy to have the internet handy at times, but I sure don't want to pay for it.
My Razor was "better", but it couldn't do all the things I want/need.
That's the point with me. All it needs to do is be a phone, the other things are distractions that run down battery life. I like only having to charge the phone once a week. When I was issued a smartphone I had to charge it every day, and that was with the extended life battery. You had to baby it, and couldn't throw it in your pocket. Fortunately for me, Verizon had crap coverage at my house, so I was able to get them to take it back in the first 30 days.
Seems odd to me that they have sold 40 million of these. I would imaging that they suck as a phone, and are damned expensive on a monthly basis. Then again.. I'm a cheap bastard. Now get off my lawn!
My paranoid mind wonders how we really know these CPU cycles are working for good and not evil? It could be decrypting keys for all I know, or working out some sort of weapon system. We just have their assurances that a "work unit" really is going toward something worthwhile, and not to the CIA or NSA.
This one is all too true. I hate it when something breaks, I am working on fixing it, and 50 people call me to tell me about it. It takes way longer to get things going again.
Has anyone had anything break from this update, or has it been smooth sailing?
I'm not sure as I didn't hang around to see it finish. I did notice that it stuck the IE8 install back in after I had hid it when it showed up the first time. I hid it again, and won't let it install until I know for sure it won't break anything. My Windows box is my DVR and i don't want it to hose my ability to record and stream shows.
The accuracy inherent in the signals can vary. I drive a route to work with a hill on it. The hill's GPS reported height varies by as much as 10 meters on occasion, though is usually the same within a meter or two.
Here is a small news bit about the place.. 11 months after the flood, they are finally getting around to repair.
Flood damaged sheriff's office

LINN COUNTY (KWWL) - We got our first look inside the Linn County Sheriff's Office since last June's floods.
11 feet of water once filled the building. This week the Linn County Supervisors gave green light to fix the flood damage.
Reconstruction is scheduled to start Monday and is expected to be completed in November. The estimated cost of the project is $2.8 million, most will be paid by FEMA.
Interesting little side story to this.. A co-worker's daughter had her purse stolen at college. The perp used her bank card to buy gasoline and make online purchases. They were traced and the person was caught. The local sheriff seized the perp's computer as evidence.
Where it gets interesting is that we had a MAJOR flood last year that flooded the sheriff's office. All of the evidence on hand was destroyed in the flood, and the cases the relied on the evidence had to be thrown out. To add insult to injury, they had to replace all the evidence that was destroyed. The perp ended up getting charged with nothing, and got a brand new computer out of the deal.
Heck with that.. I can't justify a cell phone. I have one that work supplied. The only personal use is for the occasional pick up a gallon of milk call.
I bet they implement it in the UK first... "Big Brother: Remain EXACTLY where you are! Make NO move until you are ordered! [painting falls from wall, revealing a telescreen] Julia: Now they can see us... Big Brother: NOW WE CAN SEE YOU! Clasp your hands behind your heads! Stand out in the middle of the room! Stand back to back. Do NOT touch one another! Winston Smith: [hearing the helicopters approach] The house is surrounded... Big Brother: THE HOUSE IS SURROUNDED! Julia: Suppose we may as well say goodbye... Big Brother: YOU MAY AS WELL SAY GOODBYE! While we're on the subject, here comes a candle to light you to bed, here comes a chopper to chop off your head! "
Sounds like a good idea. I was pretty fed up with how gambling came to Iowa, but since the Genie is out of the bottle, I say equal opportunity. Why not allow the stupid tax to hit everyone. Just make sure gambling losses are non tax deductable, and that they tax the bejesus out of the online casinos.

I didn't know there was a two. The one I played several years ago sucked dog shit with corn through a straw.

This is what I love about slashdot. I may know a little about a subject, but there is always an expert that can expand my knowledge. Thanks!

And that is why many informed users don't use Chrome, Safari, or IE.
All those "nice to have" pages would vanish if it weren't for ads.
Facebook and Twitter go to the shitter!
