    I went to New York a few weeks ago, I walked into a small store and looked around, and voila! ID Cards, look almost EXACTLY like drivers licenses, the guy doesn't ask your age or anything, you can put anything you want on the card and it looks VERY official, costs 5$ and takes 15 minutes.
    How odd. Also is perfectly legal.

    Umm, Hate to break it to you8, but 40000 people with plastic spoons aren't gonna take down 400 people with M16s.
    The Veitcong took their knowledge of jungle tacticts and used that knowledge to beat the shit out of the US. The USs solution was to remove the jungle, so they napalmed/agent oranged huge chunks of jungle out of the way to get at the veitcong, who quietly disappeared.

    Define my 'Fare share in taxes'.

    I don't attend school, remove any amount of taxes which goes to pay for public schooling.

    I'm not on welfare, remove any portion of my taxes that goes to pay for welfare.

    I don't benefit from research into the mating habits of the Man O' War jellyfish, pull that too...
    Heck, pull out all of that useless research funding. I dont give a shit what the health benefits of Catsup are or any number of other inane things the government pays people to study.

    I'd prefer NOT to pay Social Security, I think I can plan for my retirement a hell of a lot more efficiently than the government.

    The Federal Income tax was only introduced in the last 50 years, and it was forced through congress with only 2 states properly ratifying.
    If the government wants my money it can provide me a service that I can benefit from. Like Roads. I don't mind one bit paying the tolls on the toll roads around me, because I use those roads.

    But I sure as hell hate seeing $200+ yanked out of my paycheck each time because some stupid bastard in some inner city needs new shoes and more channels on HBO.

    Umm, I believe he means things like:
    'Ok, we arrested this guy because we have 4 eye witnesses who saw him shoot that guy, we searched his appartment and found his diary saying he's going to do it, we found the gun that was used, etc... etc...'

    Then the Judge throws the case out because someone forgot to get a search warrant.

    When the overwhelming evidence points to someone's guilt, but the case is dismissed on a technicality, that shows just one of the huge problems with the American legal system.

    And that's the way it oughta be!! There should be a 200 question written test before anyone is allowed to run for office or vote! It should cover basic history of the state/country and office you are running/voting for, general knowledge and literacy, basic problem solving.
    That way people who want to vote/run for an office have to know WTF they are voting/running for. Regular people ARE too stupid to vote!!

    Because I do not in any way benefit from the creation of said school.
    Taxes are inherently wrong. To coerce money from someone in order to pay for something which does not benefit them is commonly known as extortion.

    Am I free, at this moment, to walk into any 'Public' school building in the country, sit down in a class, and participate in it? If not then this is not a Public good. It is a private good subsidized by public funds. I use the roads, I'll gladly pay for their upkeep. I use the telephone system, I'll pay for its upkeep (Which I do, through my phone bill). I do NOT use the public school system, so I shouldn't be paying for it.

    There is no such thing as an uncopyable sound.
    I can put my Mic near the speaker and record the thing as a wav as it plays, then compress it to Mp3. With a decent mic and speakers and no background noise you can get an excellent reproduction from this. And, Lo and Behold! It's impossible to prevent!

    Ok, maybe I'm just an idiot. But isn't the TSP juust an excersise in pattern matching? It took me maybe 5 minutes to solve the version that the link in the article pointed to.
    It's just a matter of sorting connections until the string is complete. Enough conditions are given that any computer should be able to solve it in seconds. I suppose if there were 50 thousand cities you wanted to visit without every visiting the same one twice it would be a lot harder... But I think given that a solution exists I can solve anything up to 12 or so cities.

    I am perfectly comfortable with the concept of micro-evolution, evolution within a species can be demonstrated in a lab, or observed in the real world. Speciation or Macro-Evolution can not. I challenge ye, turn any given species into a significantly different species.
    When that is done, I will happily step back, admit the validity of macro-evolution, and move my debate to the 'Big Bang' fallacy.

    So what prevents someone from mounting all of those 486 processors onto 1 largish board? The connection would have to be faster, the space needed would be less, and I imagine the energy usage would be cheaper to just cool the entire room... Couple of wall sized fans maybe? Is this even feasable?

    The beowulf clusters don't need all of that though. Well, they don't need hardrives (Right?).
    They would just need a processor (Preferably better than 4mhz, but when you can put a million of them in a small cardboard box...) How many I/O cards would you need for something that isn't much more than another processor? In fact... I was wondering what the difference between a Beowulf cluster and a multiple proccesor server is. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding the function of a beowulf, but it seems to me that it's just a bunch of procerssors linked together. If I'm wrong someone let me know...

    Hrmm... So when can I get a lighter doubles as my monitor?

    If they can make an entire PC this small, does that mean they can make a beowulf cluster the size of a softball? How fast is this thing? I couldn't find any real stats on it on the website... It would be nice to know just how powerful this little thing is, and how much it costs. From the picture it looks like that if those 2 chips aren't phenomenally expensive it's a 5$ radio shack system.

    There are a lot of commercial software packages and hosting services which provide for credit card transactions. Also third party companies that specialize in that sort of thing.

    So what are they going to do when this turns Shadowrunish? What happens if the Cyberpolice try to shut down Slashdot and they get their asses kicked? Somehow I doubt the government will be any more effective at capturing internet criminals or dissidents than they are at capturing any other variety. After all, in the last 20 years they've caught what, 20 people? And every couple of weeks a government site is defaced. I'd say we are perfectly capable of defending ourselves on the information freedom front right now.

    While the above post will probably get moderated down, he's surprisingly accurate. The actual citizenry does NOT elect the president. The votes are tabulated on a state by state basis and the person who wins the state gets all of the electoral votes for that state, IN THEORY. The actual members of the electoral college are NOT recquired to vote the way the majority of the state votes. They could decide to ignore the entire election process and pick whoever they wanted. This is why each candidate chooses a set of Members for each state, if they win the popular vote in that state their members get to vote. OF course if someone *cough*Gates*cough* paid off the electoral college then POOF! Someone who got 1% of the popular vote just became president. There really isn't anything we can do if they decide to start cracking down on our freedoms short of revolt.

    The video cameras would have been dumped early, if only to lessen the weight to make moving easier. Water and food would be the only things in my pack (unless I was carrying the tent).

    This shows that you aren't thinking very clearly as it is. What use would you have for a tent? It's a paper thin piece of plastic. It's no protection against anything you are worried about, it only prevents you from seeing your surroundings. I'd have tossed the tent, the big camera, my clothes (Except for what I was wearing), and the sound crap first. And kept the little camera so that once I got the hell out of there I'd have some proof that those woods needed to be carpet bombed into dust.>:)

    You can honestly say you felt NOTHING for the characters in this movie?! The entire apology to the camera scene in the middle of the night didn't make you feel sorry for Heather? As for the 3 getting lost, I just decided to assume that we were meant to think there was some supernatural intervention in there. I grew up in a massive forest, so 3 idiots getting lost in the woods isn't that scary to me. But I thought it was an excellent movie.
