  1. In it for the money? Really? on Google's Action Makes A Mockery Of Its Values · · Score: 1

The boys at Google already have more money than they know what to do with. I dunno if they could spend all they have before they die. I'm not going to be a corporate apologist, but given Google's track record, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this. Sometimes you *do* have to commit little evils to propagate greater goods. Is it beyond comprehension that the money Google makes in China will go for causes and projects that, in the end, create a net good?

"Why would you even WANT to use an OS that will not be supported for your hardware? Every software update will break it so you end up running an old version of the software all the time just so you can be l33t?" I ask my Windows-using friends this all the time.

  3. DVD Jon on Apple Planning Intel iBook Debut for January? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Although I'm very (VERY) interested to see what Apple's design crew comes up with for these Intel-based machines, the real drama is going to involve watching OS X make its way into the wild, whacky world of x86 commodity hardware. Surely this is going to be one of the most sought-after hacks in the world after the first final release of OS X Intel hits the streets. God help whichever Apple lackey is within 100 yards of SJ when this happens.

This has all got to be pretty disillusioning for Steve, such a child of the 70s and an avid music freak. I keep wondering when the big backlash against the music industry is going to happen. Does anyone else get the feeling that they just keep pushing and pushing only to see how far they can go before the consumer says, "oh, screw this." I would LOVE to pay money directly to an artist I like for the music he or she produces. Buying CDs now just makes me feel dirty.

You knew we'd immediately get 30 replies defending Apple because -- in general -- the /. crowd is pretty bright and recognizes a crime when they see one. Why not put aside your old, tired Apple/Microsoft hatred and join the rest of us in discussing the real issue here, which is not about Apple so much as U.S. trade law?

"Apple's offering, despite the nice physical design and great navigation, is too much bloat for way too much money in my eyes." Right, well, there's always going to be a minority viewpoint, of course. But the most important part of the design (love it or hate it) is the way it works between all three components of Apple's offering. It may be bloat. It may be expensive. It may be proprietary, but damn if using it isn't as easy as falling out of bed. People are willing to pay for easy. And even without this ease of use, Apple now has an overwhelming majority of the mindshare among the kinds of hipsters who can drive trends like this all the way to the stars and back. Call me when the Creative CEO is joined onstage by Bono and The Edge.

  14. It's gotta be about more than cash on Creative, Apple Battle for MP3 Player Market · · Score: 5, Insightful

I've owned two iPods, and I've never taken a look at one of Creative's offerings. As has been said (probably) countless times every time an iPod story shows up here, Apple has the Holy Trinity of online music: Software (iTunes), Store (iTMS), Player (iPod). You're just not going to beat Apple until you come to the field with at least those three pieces.

  17. No mention of the support? on Review of Squeezebox MP3 Player · · Score: 1

I've got two SliMP3 players now, both running wirelessly to two different stereo systems in my home off an iBook server that's connected to a 25GB music library on an external FW drive. The comments here make it clear that you really have to buy a SLiMP3 (now Squeezebox) and *use* it to appreciate how sweet it is. I've gotten rid of two CD players and stacks of CDs since the SLiMP3s came to visit, and they look GREAT nestled there in my component rack. But the single best thing about the SLiMP3 is that it boasts the best tech support of any consumer electronic or computer device I've ever purchased, bar none. Drop an e-mail to the users list and it is literally swarmed within minutes by Slim Devices staff and other experienced users who can answer any question you could ever have; it's an impressive thing to behold.
