>Despite the unfortunate price/performance ratio of their hardware (as compared to PC equipment),
You mean that same price / performance "disparity" that BLEW AWAY Dell and any and all other intel based supercompter clusters?
That must be the reason why VT choose G5s and OSX...:)
In some areas that may be true, but in others, say Supercomputing Clusters, its just not the case...
a) use a browser instead of the top class itunes store. b) i get to use some handcuff microsoft monoply DRM schema instead of the aptly named "Fairplay" DRM from itunes. c) I don't get to use their music with the number 1 (and coolest and functional) selling mp3 player in the world. d) i can't buy music if i use a mac. e) I get to add the to the walmart-fication of american which in my opinion is a mindset is destroying the quality of life in america?
I'd rather spend the 12 cents....
and BTW i have bought about 250 songs from the itunes music store....best music experience online...
blah blah blah... how much money do commerical artists get via kazaa?
If apple tried to "change the way musicians get paid" when they launched itunes, there would be a grand total of 14 songs on the itunes store instead of today's half million dollar total...
I'm now over 250 song purchased from the itunes music store and still think its the closest thing to digital music nirvana there is.
Very liberal DRM (that still protects the artist), cheap, Incredbile round tripping between itunes software and the ipod and the list goes on...
Scott "how's buymusic.com doing now?" Blum can kiss my itunes using behind. It still cracks me up when i think of the shameful buymusic.com launch and the quotes that were attributed to him....
Then maybe adobe tools are not for you. Adobe Photoshop is a high end production tool designed for graphic professionals and creative agencies.
Those "alot of people who would like to pay for it can't afford it. " people are can use other tools if they can not afford it.
I "can not afford" to live in a NYC penthouse so i don't. I don't bitch about the price and download a penthouse from kazaa in some sort of twisted justification of my act.
It priced where its at because the target group knows it will save them at least that much in time, effort and money.Just because you think something is overpriced does not mean it is overpriced.
In my case it has paid for itself many times over. (including all the upgrades)
BTW, Adobe has a low end photoshop that does most of what people who "think" its overpriced need to do. Its $99.

Check it out, this was the best a company spokesperson could muster to undercut the announcement: "Windows is all about choice... we believe you should have the same choice when it comes to music services." Translation: "Use any service you want as long as it sells Windows Media, buy any player out there as long as it plays Windows Media-- but for heaven's sake, don't buy one of those wretched iPod thingies or we'll be completely boned with our whole plan to monopolize digital media commerce and then we might actually have to start innovating for our paychecks for a change." Or, to put it a little more succinctly, "you can have any color you want, as long as it's black."
I think this is a case of the "its not the size of the boat...its the motion of the ocean";)
First there is brand name. Its almost like kleenex now. Second i guess people are looking at the overal consumer experience. The others just can't match the ease of use and the itunes music store.
When pepsi gives away 100 million itunes songs next month, the brand awareness is going to peak out somewhere around the stratosphere....

As soon as apple ships the ipod jr at the price points suggested then they will probably take all 5 top selling spots on the list. Not many people are going to be buying a "iriver" with 128mbs when they can get a iPod that holds 800 songs for the same price AND get the itunes music store AND the ID of ipods AND the ease of use that apple gives them......
The 10GB Apple iPod ($299) reportedly edged out the cheaper 128MB Digitalway ($140) in overall sales, with the remainder of the iPod models also being well represented:
Yes. to all your questions... if you have itunes you can set it up to stream to other computers on your subnet (house) or you can actually authorize those computers to use that music as well. I think the limit is five computers. If you sell your computer you can de-authorize the music on that system then re-authroize it on your new computer.
It also "jogs" well..
Congrats. You got the best digital music expericence on the planet.
(Be sure to sign up for new music on tuesday emails from apple. as well.)

Maybe the next open source user that wants the "world to be free" will think for a extra second before they go off on another tirade like how gimp can be a real competitor to photohop. Paintbrush pro? yes. maybe.
But photoshop nope. theres a reason why its a better product. Its becuase they know the harder they work at it the potencial of more monies are in their future.
Spending hours upon hours on an open source project is noble but who's paying your rent while you do it? Doing it on your free time? That's cool. Just don't EXPECT everyone else to give up theirs.
That's a bummer that this has happened. What really blows me away is how people seems to forget that old adage.
Even more importantly, people seem to ignore TIME as a factor of cost. As in the time it takes to return a cheaper product that breaks. The extra amount of time it takes to setup products compared to others on the market, and another important time waster, waiting for products or ipod drivers to ship for linux when much better solutions may be out there now on other platforms.(Can you say Gimp vis - a vis, photoshop?)
I guess i look at these things as tools. I always try and find tools that are going to not only entertain me or empower me but also save me time and hassle. Because that is the most costly of all factors in ALL our lives.
In the last year i bought:
a) An ipod: not waiting for a org vobis play becuase frankly i don't have the ears of a dog to "tell" the difference.
b) itunes music store: best of breed dgital music store that is one click easy, and i know the artists are getting SOMETHING unlike kazaa.
c) a dual g5- damn fast.
d) OSX - best of breed combonation between the power of unix and open source and commerical apps.

Nor will i bring up the point of how much TIME and money of yours it would take to build an myth tv type solutions.Nor do i want a pc in my living room. I know i know put it somewhere else and drag a line in. No thanks.)
Did these cost me more? In some cases yes. But whatever the delta in price was i can GUARANTEE you that i have more than made up for it in increased productivity and not having to pull my hair out trying to get these things set up.

They agreed to provide this information, and said they had no problem telling users how to solve the problem. I, in turn, provided webspace and bandwidth for them.
