Hi. yes i do know that windows would not be run as a 2nd OS. I meant by using windows as an example is that most people would think this would become magically possible...
>A Mac built around this chip could theoretically run OS X, GNU/Linux, Mac OS 9, and the PowerPC version of Windows NT, all simultaneously and independently."
But in reality, i believe this is so apple can release "big iron" type systems (servers), the VM would allow Multiple versions of the server OS to run for maximum uptime, protection etc...
Most people are going to take it as "Cool i can run windows and OSX at the same time at full speed" But in reality its closer to what i described above.
But if others care to chime in i could be completely wrong...
Its about a corporation using people's time and effort to further its bottom line.
(ooops. that does sound like open source)
Read the article. The main reason people are doing seems to be as quoted in the story, not that they ARE trendsetters....but they would LIKE to be trendsetters.
So people trying to be cool are being used by Corps to hock their STUFF in a most unseemly way to me (IMO).
Why unseemly? I'll give you a example. Let's say I am throwing a party, its a pot luck and everyone is supposed to bring over a casserole or other dish.
If a bzzz agent brought over "Lenner's Sausages" and starts to extol the virtues of said meat links... i WOULD THROW HER ASS out of my party.
I invited my guests over to relax and forget about the world NOT TO BE SOLD TO.
Isn't it enough with billboards on roads and product placement in TV shows?
Now they want guest and friends to sell me shit?*
*And no, i don't care if they really believe in the shit they are selling, there is a fine line between a friends reccomendation and a sales pitch. These people cross it.
Oh and can we stop apply the ever-so hip "Open source" to everything?
so let me get this straight. Don't buy a mac since you can't "play" with your little "nintendo" shoot'm up games and you can't infringe (steal!) copyrighted material.
how's that spyware working out for you?
Ever think people that don't play ataris anymore or who do not steal music don't see a problem with that?
new batteries for ipod are found very easily on the web for 50 bucks.
if a person is honestly giving up on the phenomenal connectivity, amazing and simple interface, the greatest digital music store on the planet, and the fact its the best looking mp3 player bar none. Just because of a lack of a removable battery then that person is just plain foolish. IMO.
It should be noted that I read recently (sorry no links but maybe others can chime in) that BMW is working with Apple to replace its Windows in Car solution with something from Apple.
Will this only extend to the music portion of the car?
Or will apple oversee other parts like navigation etc..
It was not known according to the article, but the take away was BMW was not happy with their Microsoft solution.
So you next car might not have a steering wheel but perhaps a "Clickable scroll wheel";)
I went to csszengarden and clicked on a couple of sites.
Its showing exactly what i am talking about. Fine and pretty and nice as they are (and i mean no disrespect to the authors) those are simple sites.(not large scale corp sites) and yes i know of fastcompany.com. I'm not going to be pure CSS just to be cool if it blows out my budget. and people like dan (the book writing in this article) agrees. table != bad.
The stuff i work on and am talking about are much more complex. (I actually got into a mindset when using CSS of dumbing down my designs. (in a bad way not the good UI sort of way) but i stopped that when i found how well css and minimal tables work.
Plus, i did not have time to check them out on the dozen browsers (and revs) we support so i can't tell how well they look in IE 5.0(.1?) for example.
Neither S in CSS stands for "Standard". What i mean but that is that do NOT expect CSS to give you a right once play on any browser with the same results.
CSS is great to reduce download speed of pages. To keep all the style in one place. To separate logic from data. But do not think writing a web site in CSS will solve all your browser compatibility problems. And don't fall under the influence of some elitist CSS religion.
The amount of hacks, even by the experts, required to even get close to modern browser compatibility is really hilarious. (ooops i mean painful.)
So get into CSS. Use all the great features in offers, but remember that its not magic bullet.
Yes, i'm sure there are some simple sites that can be pulled off with CSS and look pretty much the same but honestly, when you reduce your site to this level, they ALLL look alike:
-header graphic -2 or 3 columns -a sort of anasepctic feel to it.
In the mean time, stick with a combination of CSS AND minimal tables.
Don't believe it? FIne, its not my hair that you will pulling out;)
there is currently a "No Camera" version of the TREO 600 available from some providers.
Hopefully they will do the same for the 650. I for one am sick of camera phones.
oh for petes sake!
Can you at least to a simple google search to find out why this is not so??!
Its not like its been brought up on slashdot EVERY SINGLE TIME QT IS MENTIONED....
Short answer for the kids that ride the short yellow bus:
They had a free version for windows.
It was supposed to be used for only apps that were free and not for a commercial entity such as an in house enterprise app or commercial app.
But guess what? Nearly no one on the windows side followed the rules and Trolltech lost $$$$$$$$.
So blame your windows buddies.
They are to blame. Not trolltech.
If you make or save money on an app you build for a commercial entity, YOU should pay for it.
Don't agree with me or Troltech?
Don't USE IT!
Simple.

Your loss. Best writing on a sci fi show in the past decade IMO. But if you liked Babylon 5 i understand your comments.
>Factor those back in, and the game industry comes out back on top.
Right. And you have the data to prove this?
Keep up the nintendo-ing- because account-ing isn't working out for you.
I see the quality of reporting by our 4th estate is still ever so wonderful.
I've seen what passes as "mods" of PC.
Cripes. Purple glow in the dark strips. "See thru cases" ooohh...
It reminds me of the honda civic fan boys who lower their car and put blue glow things around the license plates.
Eeeekk.. I guess this is where i have to say, to each his own... but.. shudders....
Elegance is not a MOD.
i agree in general but there are some banks / online bill payment services that don't work with firefox yet.
no. i do believe this guy should be locked up. its the loser up a couple of notches that sees now problem with CC theft.
how in the world did "Yea... okay. Good idea. Let's throw all those big badass hackers into p"
get modded as insightful?
what he is saying is total frelling bullcrap...
oh for petes sake. grown up. its copyright infringement, the slang name of which is piracy.
amen brother. see my post below.
This is not open source "advertising".

and by foolish i mean stupid.
Not only is this a surprisingly cool costume that uses technology in innvative ways...
But it still looks better any model from creative, virgin, ogg vorbis player, out there!
> I'll always buy it. Even if it costs me $100 more
You might. Most Open Software users would not.
Period.
Its more than this. the link you pointed to is the current system. They are working on something new.

this is what i meant.
